High pressure over eastern Ontario will continue to build
southeast across the eastern Great Lakes through Sunday. Strong
low pressure moves northeastward along the spine of the Appalachians
Sunday through Monday, with a lingering trough over the southern
Great Lakes into Tuesday. High pressure briefly builds north
across the Ohio Valley Tuesday into Tuesday night before a fast
moving low tracks east across the Great Lakes region.

Made some minor changes to expand the overage of the light
snow/flurries across the central and western CWA. Fortunately
the airmass across the region has chilled to -12C or colder so
there is NOT a threat of freezing drizzle.
Some light accumulations will be possible from western Cuyahoga
County to Ottawa County, then southward to maybe northern
Richland and Seneca Counties. The very minor accumulations
could be between a dusting to maybe a couple tenths.
Previous Discussion...
Northeast flow of cold air aloft continues to contribute to the
development of light, isolated to scattered snow showers for
portions of north-central Ohio. Lake-induced CAPE of 100-200
J/kg will be sufficient for snow showers to continue through the
morning hours. However, high pressure building in from central
Ohio today will lower the inversion heights while simultaneously
advecting much drier air to the region, rapidly diminishing
this lake effect snow and clouds this afternoon. The cold
airmass remains over the region which will result in below
normal temperatures continuing today and tonight, with temps
about 10-15 degrees below climate normals. While winds decrease
tonight, light winds will be able to contribute to low single
digit, and even negative (for NW PA), wind chills for tonight.
Sunday temperatures improve as dry air advection results in
mostly sunny skies. Diurnal heating should be enough to bring
temperatures back up to near normal. Precipitation associated
with a major low pressure system begins to approach the
southeast CWA Sunday afternoon. More on that below.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for portions of Northeast
Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania for Sunday night into Monday and has
been expanded to include Lake and Geauga Counties in Ohio. The
ending time of the Watch has also been extended in time until 7 PM
Monday in Ohio and 10 PM Monday in NW Pennsylvania.
Model consensus continues to improve for the winter storm expected to
impact the region Sunday night into Monday. Low pressure
originating along the Gulf Coast will deepen as it tracks up the
east side of the Appalachians, reaching central/eastern
Pennsylvania by Monday morning. A deepening upper level low will
focus moisture advection to the north and west around this system,
with snow developing Sunday evening across central and eastern
portions of the area. The airmass does not start off overly cold
with a ribbon of temperatures at 850mb as warm as -0.5C moving
across eastern Ohio/western Pennsylvania before the deepening system
approaches and thermodynamic cooling increases. Forecast reasoning
remains largely the same as previous shifts, thinking that
impressive snow rates will align with forcing along the 850-700mb
front draped across NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania. The main change
with this forecast package was to add more contribution from Lake
Erie as cyclonic flow ramps up over the lake. The airmass will not
be cold enough during this window for pure lake effect, but models
do show 1000-850mb omega ramping up between 9-15Z when we see a uni-
directional northwest flow set up across Lake Erie contributing
moisture and enhanced snowfall downwind of the lakeshore. It is
always hard to determine the extent of this contribution and
forecast snowfall may trend upwards as we get more influence from
high resolution models over the next 36 hours. The 00Z NAM in
particular has a bullseye of very high qpf along the shoreline in NE
Ohio. The majority of the other deterministic models has an axis
with over an inch of qpf across NW Pennsylvania which has
consistently been the focus for a heavy snow event. Snow ratios
start off on the low side near 8:1 on Sunday night before colder air
is wrapped into the system and the airmass becomes somewhat more
favorable for lake effect snow. Given the higher water content, this
will be a heavier snow and expect compaction to play a role in
measurements. Some models show snowfall in excess of a foot across
NW Pennsylvania but have kept the official forecast in the 8-12"
range given the expected compaction on Sunday night. At times models
have also tried to wrap some mid-level dry air into eastern portions
of the area. This seems less apparent with the 00Z cycle but is
something to keep an eye on.
With this cycle have raised snowfall totals across Northeast Ohio by
about 1-3" and extended the Winter Storm Watch to include
Geauga/Lake Counties where snowfall in excess of 8" is possible. Can
not rule out needing to expand the watch further into
Cuyahoga/Portage Counties but confidence in the westward extent of
higher values was not quite there yet.
This system quickly tracks north to New England on Monday leaving a
cyclonic flow in place across the eastern Great Lakes. Although most
models indicate some drier air will initially overspread the Great
Lakes, it appears short lived as deeper moisture
fills back in with the passage of a second trough digging through
the Ohio Valley. Lake effect snows will ramp back up on Monday and
raised snowfall totals to some extent with a multi-banded
configuration with northwest flow. The airmass being only moderately
cold enough for lake effect should be a limiting factor for higher
amounts. Extended the watch until 7 PM Monday in Ohio and 10 PM
Tuesday in NW Pennsylvania to account for the window of deeper
moisture. Snow and headlines may need to be extended if adequate
snow continues through Monday night despite moisture depth
decreasing below 7K feet. Low level flow remains out of the
northwest through midday on Tuesday before a ridge builds in
and the flow backs to southwesterly.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A colder pattern is expected to continue through the extended
forecast as low pressure crosses the Great Lakes on Wednesday,
pulling an arctic cold front south behind it. This airmass will
usher in temperatures of around -18C and expect highs on Thursday to
struggle to reach 20 degrees, especially with a fresh snowpack.
Additional lake effect snow showers are expected but accumulations
will be limited by the overall dry airmass. High pressure is
expected to build over the region by Friday.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
A swath of MVFR ceilings and flurries extend from over Lake
Erie into NW OH. These will persist into the evening but should
shift northward of the lake as high pressure over Quebec shifts
winds more to the east and maybe southeast. This region should
become VFR through the evening. Away from this area of flurries
expect to see VFR conditions into Sunday afternoon.
Northeast winds weaken and shift more to the east and southeast
tonight into Sunday morning. Speeds should be under 12 knots by
late afternoon.
Outlook...Non-VFR expected with widespread snow across eastern
OH/northwestern PA Sunday night into Monday. Additional non-
VFR conditions in lake effect snow expected Monday afternoon
into Tuesday. Clipper system is expected to bring additional
non-VFR conditions across northeast OH and northwest PA Tuesday
night into Wednesday, mainly with snow.

.MARINE...
Small Craft Advisories remain in effect through the morning then
come to an end from east to west as the flow veers to easterly by
tonight. Winds will be 15 knots or less until late Sunday night when
winds increase out of the north/northwest in response to a system
tracking up the East Coast. Small Craft Advisories will be needed
again through Monday, ending on Tuesday as the flow backs to
southwesterly ahead of the next system tracking through the Great
Lakes on Wednesday. An arctic cold front will move south across the
lake Wednesday night into Thursday.
