.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front lifts northward across the lake through sunrise.
Deepening low pressure moves northeast into the Great Lakes
region by early Friday morning. A very strong arctic cold front
extending from this low races eastward across the region
overnight Thursday into early Friday morning. A surface trough
then lingers over the eastern Great Lakes through Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
No significant changes have been made through sunrise. We
continue to dig through the models for the next update later
this morning.

Previous Discussion...
A stationary front that is hung up on the Lake Erie shoreline will
lift north away the area as a warm front this evening into tonight.
Precipitation will develop over the Ohio Valley Thursday morning in
response to an approaching low pressure system. There is a
slight chance that precipitation falls briefly as a wintry mix
of freezing rain and snow before transitioning to all rain by
mid-late morning. Rain shower coverage increases through the
afternoon/evening with Pops increasing from 20-30% at 15Z to 70%
by 21Z.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A winter storm is still on track to impact the region during
the Holiday Weekend. Strong winds continue to be a be a major
component with this system, along with prolonged cold and
varying degrees of snow and blowing snow. Areas with greater
confidence in either 60 mph winds or higher snowfall amounts
have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning with this package
while a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for areas closer to
Central Ohio which could experience slightly lower winds or
snowfall amounts. Winds and particularly dangerous wind chills
remain a concern for this area.

Water vapor imagery shows our winter storm starting to take shape
this afternoon. A 175 knot upper level jet will dive across the
northern Rocky Mountains, carving out a deep upper level trough
across the northern Plains, eventually closing off over the Upper
Midwest. An elongated area of surface low pressure ahead of this
system will track to the Central Great Lakes, then undergo
considerable deepening over Lake Huron and into southern
Ontario/Quebec as the upper trough becomes negatively tilted.
This system will start out warm on Thursday night with
temperatures in the upper 30s, followed by very strong arctic
front that will race east across the region Thursday night into
Friday morning. Timing of the front continues to speed up from
previous cycles and that has been reflected in some of the
earlier headline timing. Temperatures across the western half
of the area will likely be into the single digits already by
Friday morning with little recovery expected during the day.

Many characteristics of the storm that have been noted over previous
days remain similar. The arctic cold front is still expected to
cause an abrupt transition from rain to snow, although this may
occur during the pre-dawn hours for portions of the area on
Friday. Snow squalls are possible with this front, resulting in
low visibilities and a hazard to motorists. A flash freeze with
icing of some roadways and sidewalks may occur as temperatures
drop by around 30 degrees in 6 hours or less. Snow amounts with
this system have generally trended lower for inland areas over
the last 48 hours as wrap around moisture behind the front has
trended northward. Most areas away from Lake Erie can expect
between 1-4 inches of snow, although the winds will make it hard
to measure. These generally low snowfall amounts along with the
intermittent nature of the snow are one of the reasons blizzard
conditions are unlikely. In addition, there is no snowpack to
contribute to lower visibilities and blowing. Snowbelt locations
can expect some high amounts, with lake effect snow continuing
through the holiday weekend.

Winds continue to be a big concern for this system with the peak
winds expected Friday afternoon and evening. Winds will gust to 35-
45 mph along the arctic cold front and through Friday morning.
Surface low pressure will curl north to Lake Huron, deepening to
around 975mb by 21Z Friday and creating a strong southwesterly
pressure gradient between this deep low and strong arctic high
pressure over the Plains. An 850mb low level jet of around 55
knots will be over northern Ohio and Lake Erie on Friday evening
and model soundings indicate sufficient mixing to tap into this
layer. The 12Z GFS remains an outlier showing the low deepening
over southeast Michigan instead of Lake Huron or farther north.
In response to this different low placement, the model also has
a much stronger get of near 70 knots. This outlier is not
favored but will be a real concern if a scenario like this
develop. However, the favored solutions still indicate southwest
wind gusts of 55-60 mph which could down limbs, contribute to
power outages, and make travel difficult. Timing of the Winter
Storm Warnings has been truncated to mainly encompass the snow
and strongest winds with wind chill headlines likely still
needed into Christmas morning.

Both temperatures and wind chills will be a big concern beginning on
Friday and continuing through Sunday. The lowest wind chills will
occur Friday afternoon and night where many areas will dip to -20 to
-25. Opted not to issue a separate wind chill headline where
 the Winter Storm Warning is in effect but it is possible the
 remaining Watch could be converted to a Wind Chill headline
 given lower snow amounts. The duration of very cold
 temperatures from Friday morning into Sunday is also unusual
 and could lead to infrastructure problems, such as burst pipes
 in empty buildings over the long weekend. Problems could be
 aggravated if power outages occur.

Lake effect snow is expected to continue though Saturday and taper
off on Sunday for locations along the lakeshore as the airmass.
Confidence in amounts is low at this time given timing is 3-4
days out. Models are in fairly good agreement that low level
winds will be southwesterly while mid-level winds shift more
onshore by Saturday afternoon/night. This veering through the
column could also cause more of a multibanded scenario vs a
single dominant band. Given the mid-level flow and position of
the upper trough starting to move into Quebec, we do think snow
will impact at least Ashtabula and Erie Counties with lower
confidence for Lake County. Stay tuned to forecast updates
through the end of the week as high resolution models will help
pinpoint bands.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Some lingering lake effect snow showers are possible across the
snowbelt areas on Monday as westerly flow begins to shift to
predominately southwesterly on the northern fringe of a surface
high pressure. All showers should dissipate by Monday night,
allowing for predominately dry conditions to persist through
mid-week, although the ECMWF is beginning to hint at a shortwave
trough so will need to continue to monitor that for additional
precipitation chances. Along with the southerly flow, weak WAA
will increase over the area, bringing northern Ohio and NW PA
out of the frigid temperatures that the area will experience
over the weekend. On Monday, highs will reach into the low 20s,
but gradually increase to highs on Wednesday reaching into the
mid 30s. Overnight lows will follow a similar trend, with lows
dipping into the low teens on Monday night then into the upper
teens on Tuesday night.

.AVIATION /06Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
Easterly flow off the west end of Lake Erie has allowed for
some light fog to develop. Dont think this drops lower then MVFR
levels. Elsewhere VFR conditions are expected through most of
the day. There is some moisture that attempts to move into
Eastern Ohio and NW PA later afternoon into the evening.
Southeasterly downsloping flow likely slows the development of
the MVFR ceilings unless the rainfall ends up more persistent
than anticipated. Southeast winds become the strongest across NW
PA late this evening into the overnight with 30 to 35 knot
gusts possible.

The main story will be the very strong cold front that moves
into NW OH 04-05Z and into NW PA by 10z-12Z. Winds out of the
southeast ahead of the front shift to the southwest and west
with gusts of 40 to 50 knots likely. Any remaining rain when
the cold front passes may briefly turn to freezing rain then to
all snow. The amount of snow is still uncertain but higher
amounts likely occur as you approach the lake.

Outlook...Non-VFR persists through the day Friday through early
Sunday, primarily from low ceilings and/or periods of blowing
snow. Strong southwesterly winds with frequent gusts exceeding
40 knots are expected Friday through Saturday.

.MARINE...
Dangerous marine conditions will exist across Lake Erie starting
Thursday night, persisting through Saturday and perhaps into Sunday.
Storm and heavy freezing spray warnings are now in effect across the
entire lake, including a Low Water Advisory for the western basin as
water levels will drop to as low as 3 to 4 feet below low water
datum late Friday into Saturday.

For the Storm Warning, a strong cold front will quickly move west to
east across the lake late Thursday night into Friday morning,
ushering southwesterly winds of 35 to 45 knots. These winds will
further increase to 45 to 50 knots by Friday afternoon and persist
into Saturday. Gusts of 60 to perhaps 65 knots are possible. IN
addition, an anomalously-cold airmass will descend south across the
Great Lakes, with ambient air temperatures above the lake plummeting
to the the teens on Friday morning. These cold temperatures,
combined with strong winds, will result in a heavy freezing spray
threat which may persist into Sunday.

Conditions will only improve slightly across the lake by late
Sunday, though southwesterly winds will remain elevated, in the
realm of 20 to 25 knots. By Monday, southwesterly winds will weaken
further near 15 knots.
