.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the region this morning will move eastward
through the day allowing a warm front to lift across the region
through the evening. A cold front sweeps across the region on
Sunday. A surface trough then lingers over the Great Lakes
Sunday night into Monday evening. High pressure returns to the
area from the upper Midwest on Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Temperatures across the area are overachieving this afternoon as
a cloud deck is taking its time moving east into the forecast
area. Temperatures are going to break freezing in many locations
before clouds move in, which will have large implications to the
weather forecast for this evening. The surface warm front
remains well to the south over the lower Ohio Valley and will
lift northeast this evening. Some light precipitation was being
noted over Indiana this afternoon ahead of the front, but with
how dry the low levels of the atmosphere are, not sure how much
of this is actually reaching the ground as no weather stations
in Indiana are reporting anything as of 2 PM. As this scattered
precipitation moves northeast into the western forecast area,
uncertainty still exists if precipitation will actually occur
over the region with the dry lower atmosphere. A further
complication is that temperatures area overachieving and while
forecast models suggest some icing in the Toledo metro area,
temperatures are greater than expected, which biases the
ice forecast as overdone. Believe that the end condition will
be either dry or rain and will reduce some of the
snow/sleet/freezing rain mention for rain tonight. If
temperatures do come down enough, there could be a need for a
Special Weather Statement for brief freezing rain/drizzle, but
will defer for later as precipitation creeps closer this
evening, but end impacts will be minimal.

As the front comes in tonight, expect widespread rain to
eventually cover the forecast area and have maintained high
PoPs for tonight into Sunday. In Northwest PA, residual snow
cover is keeping temperatures down and temperatures will
continue to be slow to recover with the warm front approaching.
Therefore, there will be a several hour window for freezing rain
overnight and have opted for a Winter Weather Advisory, mostly
for the eastern half of both Erie and Crawford Counties in PA.
Temperatures will largely be at a minimum around sunset this
evening and increase with the frontal passage to the upper 30s
to near 40 degrees by daybreak. A cold front will move through
during the day on Sunday and clear rain out the region. High
temperatures for Sunday will be early ahead of the cold front.
Rain could start switching over to snow in some areas Sunday
afternoon but snow is mostly a story for Sunday night and
beyond.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Synoptic precip will quickly taper off Sunday night as the strong
front exits to the east. The lull in precip will be brief, however,
strong cold air advection develops across the Great Lakes late
Sunday night into Monday morning. Looking like a favorable setup
for another moderate to heavy lake effect event as a trough
anchors over the local area and 850 mb temps plummet to -18 to
-20C. Forecast soundings indicate favorable forcing in the
saturated DGZ and frigid surface temps and a low DGZ will
provide high snow ratios as high as 18:1 to 22:1. Still quite a
bit of uncertainty in the exact setup of the bands Monday, which
will depend on the mean flow over the lake - GFS/Canadian favor
more of a westerly fetch across the lake which would result in
a more west-to-east oriented band along the lakeshore, while the
NAM/ECMWF are slightly more northwesterly. Broad-brushed likely
to categorical PoPs for the snowbelt region for now and will
refine as confidence increases. The Canadian is hinting at a
surface trough setting up late Monday morning/afternoon, which
may provide additional convergence/lift and a period of enhanced
snowfall. The heaviest snowfall rates will likely occur between
12Z and 00Z Monday, with the highest snowfall totals likely
across Erie County, PA. Winds will become northwesterly by
Monday evening, which should push precip further inland.
Guidance is hinting at a Lake Huron connection, which may lead
to a period of enhanced snowfall across NW PA Monday night into
early Tuesday. Will not get too specific with snowfall totals at
this point due to low confidence in the placement of bands, but
will most likely at least need Winter Weather Advisories across
the primary snowbelt region at some point. Wouldn't be
surprised if resulting snowfall totals were similar to the
Friday event. Stay tuned for updates as we receive more high res
guidance.

The remainder of the local area has at least a chance of snow
showers Monday due to west-northwesterly flow advecting moisture
into the local area from Lake Michigan. Have slight chance to chance
PoPs for now and expect snow accumulations (if any) to be very light.

Another round of below normal temperatures are anticipated Monday,
with highs in the high teens to lower 20s and lows in the single
digits to around 10 degrees Monday night. Brisk winds will likely
keep wind chills in the single digits during the day Monday and near
or a few degrees below zero Monday night.

Lake effect snow should begin to taper off Tuesday morning and
diminish completely by Tuesday afternoon as high pressure
builds in from the southwest. Although highs will likely be in the
teens and lower 20s Tuesday, lows should be a few degrees warmer in
the western half of the local area as southwesterly flow begins to
develop. Still expect wind chills in the single digits Tuesday night
due to continued breezy winds.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Much calmer and warmer (but still chilly - it is January after
all!) weather is anticipated through most of Wednesday as southerly
flow and warm air advection persist. Highs will be near average in
the mid to upper 30s, although a few spots in southern and western
zones may touch 40 degrees Wednesday afternoon. A quick-moving
trough may sweep through the local area Wednesday night into
Thursday morning, but kept PoPs relatively low since moisture may be
limited. Precip may return ahead another system by the end of the
period, but not a lot of confidence in the overall synoptic setup at
this point. Temperatures will be near to a couple of degrees above
normal through the end of the week.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
VFR conditions are still expected through this evening. Mostly
clear conditions will give way to some low VFR clouds over the
next 6 to 8 hours as a warm front approaches the region from the
southwest. Temperatures are significantly warmer and above
freezing this afternoon and will maintain through the overnight
so rain is expected with the incoming front tonight. Some
freezing rain is possible in interior NW PA with residual snow
cover keeping temperatures down, but will not be a problem at
KERI. With the rain tonight, ceilings will fall to MVFR and
eventually IFR for most once the lower levels start becoming
fully saturated. IFR will be problematic at KCLE and KERI with a
downslope component to the wind and have omitted from the TAFs
for now. A cold front will move through the region on Sunday and
clear the rain and the lower clouds towards the end of the TAF
period. Southerly winds will remain somewhat elevated tonight
with the warm front approach and then veer to the southwest and
then west with the cold frontal passage. Wind gusts to 30 knots
are possible.

Outlook...Non-VFR will continue ahead of the cold front on
Sunday with rain. Periods of lake effect snow with non-VFR
across NE OH/NW PA early Monday morning through Tuesday.

.MARINE...
Southerly to southeasterly flow 10 to 20 knots is expected today,
although a very brief period of 20 to 22 knot winds are possible in
the nearshore zones of Erie County, PA late this evening. Will hold
off on a Small Craft Advisory for now, but will continue to monitor
in upcoming updates and may need to issue if winds and waves trend
higher. Offshore flow should keep waves in the 2 to 4 foot range in
this area. Winds become westerly and increase to 20 to 25 knots by
late Sunday morning and this will introduce the next significant
chance of a Small Craft Advisory. West-northwest winds may briefly
approach 30 knots Sunday early Sunday evening as a potent cold front
moves east across the lake. Small Craft Advisory will likely need to
continue through late Monday night or early Tuesday before northwesterly
winds finally decrease to 10 to 15 knots. By late Tuesday, developing
warm air advection will shift winds to the southwest and wind speeds
will likely increase to 15 to 20 knots in the nearshore zones and
15 to 25 knots in the open waters. Southwesterly flow should relax
slightly Wednesday into Thursday.
