.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure was located over Quebec early this morning and is
expected to continue moving eastward through the day. A
reinforcing cold front is expected to move southward across the
region late this evening. Low pressure looks to move quickly
northeast across the Tennessee Valley today with a trough
extending northwest over the area. High pressure builds east
across the Ohio Valley Friday night followed by a cold front
Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Only made minor changes to the forecast through sunrise as the
flurries move eastward with the trough. Flurries will mainly be
located near and east of a line from Marion to Cleveland. Winds
have dropped off enough to allow the wind advisory to end.

Previous Discussion...
Latest upper air analysis shows a vigorous upper level positive
vorticity maximum moving east across the the Great Lakes region
today. Upper level low over the northern lakes continues to
support a surface low that deepened rapidly as it approached the
Great Lakes region over the last 24 hours. Surface analysis
places the surface low currently over Lake Huron with a cold
front extending south across eastern Ohio and western
Pennsylvania. Fairly good pressure rises have been noted in the
wake of the cold front and winds have been gusting to around 50
MPH for peak winds just behind the front. Winds do appear to be
diminishing slightly over extreme western Ohio at this time. A
wind advisory still remains in effect for the gusty winds across
the western half of the forecast area and the immediate
lakeshore in the east. Expecting winds to gradually diminish
overnight as the surface low pressure system exits to the east.
The main issue tonight through Thursday night will be the lake
effect band that will develop over Lake Erie tonight and
continue through early Thursday night. This band will begin to
slide southeast to inland portions of the snowbelt late Thursday
night in response to the southern low passing by well to the
south. This feature will shift any lake effect bands to a
northwest trajectory. More on this during the second half of
Thursday night is available in the short term section of this
forecast discussion. Otherwise, there is a chance for some light
snow across the eastern half of the area in response to the low
pressure system while the rest of the area should remain dry.
Strong cold air advection will be the rule over the next 30
hours as Arctic air follows this initial cold front over the
area at this time.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
This portion of the forecast picks up late Thursday night when the
attention turns towards lake effect snow. A Winter Storm Watch for
lake effect snow has been issued for Erie County, PA from late
Thursday evening through Friday evening where the highest confidence
exists in warning criteria amounts being reached. Advisories will
likely be needed for much of the Northeast OH Snowbelt (and perhaps
Crawford PA) as we get closer.

Despite the lack of a Winter Storm Watch in Northeast Ohio,
confidence is increasing in a band of moderate to heavy snow pushing
inland from the Cleveland area points east into the Primary Snowbelt
late Thursday night or early Friday, causing quick accumulations
that can have a significant impact on the Friday morning rush.

The band of snow that will be blowing up the lake towards Buffalo
through Thursday is expected to gradually work onshore into the
primary Snowbelt of Northeast OH and Northwest PA overnight Thursday
night or early Friday as a well-defined trough moves across the lake
and shifts the flow from west-southwesterly to west-northwesterly.
Lake-induced instability will be moderate, with equilibrium levels
increasing to 8-10k feet overnight Thursday night into Friday
morning with moisture and lift maximized in the dendritic growth
zone (DGZ). This will fuel moderate to heavy, high ratio snow in the
band as it pushes onshore overnight Thursday night and early Friday.
Rates can reach 1-2" per hour in the heart of this band. This band
will begin working onshore into Erie County, PA first but will
spread farther south and west into Northeast Ohio and towards the
Cleveland area by early Friday as the trough pushes through and the
winds gradually veer. A potent mid-level vort max will add a bit of
synoptic lift between 6-15z Friday, adding confidence (along with
the decent thermodynamics) in the band of snow being intense as it
pushes onshore.

Later Friday morning, behind the passage of the trough, the initial
west-east band should push inland and break up into a more multi-
banded set-up. In addition, inversion heights will gradually begin
to lower and drier low-level air will begin working in as the upper-
level trough quickly pulls away and surface high pressure starts
building in. This is expected to lead to an overall reduction in
snow organization and intensity by later Friday morning. However,
with lake to 850mb temperature differentials of 16-20C persisting
through Friday evening and a favorable temperature profile for
favorable snow growth / high snow ratios, if any more organized
bands do persist they can continue to produce impactful snow
accumulations through Friday afternoon and perhaps into the evening
before the ridge axis moves overhead and shuts everything down
overnight Friday night.

Two spots stand out for greater snow accumulations through Friday /
into Friday evening behind the initial trough passage...one is parts
of Northwest PA, especially eastern Erie County, where the
combination of a connection to Lake Huron and upslope may aid in
continued snowfall behind the passage of the trough. The other spot
is from the Cleveland area east into parts of Lake / Geauga
Counties. Some models, such as the regional Canadian model (RGEM)
and to some extent the hi-res NAM suggest that the trough will get
"hung up" in this area through the day Friday, causing convergence
and perhaps a more organized band to persist there and lead to
locally heavier accumulations. Given the light ambient flow and
signs of an aggregate trough over the Great Lakes, there may be
credence to the idea of the convergence not pushing farther inland
in the Cleveland area on Friday. The forecast has more total snow in
these two areas for those reasons.

Overall, the forecast remains similar to the previous for total snow
amounts across the Snowbelt. A general 2-4" is expected from
northern / eastern Cuyahoga County points east through the primary
Northeast OH and Northwest PA Snowbelt, with the most widespread
burst of accumulation occurring overnight Thursday night into Friday
morning as the initial west-east band sinks south into the
area...followed by somewhat more localized accumulations continuing
through the rest of Friday and into early Friday night. Higher
amounts of 6-10" are expected for Erie County, especially east of I-
79 and in the higher terrain. We also have 4-7" in the forecast for
parts of northeast Cuyahoga, southern Lake, and northern Geauga
Counties, and will have to watch for signs of a more persistent band
lingering into Friday in those areas for the possibility of higher
amounts in a small area. Inconsistency among guidance on if that
scenario occurs, plus somewhat less favorable forecast soundings in
Cleveland than in Erie, are the reasons for holding off on a Watch
in Northeast Ohio right now. Given signs of convergence getting hung
up closer to the lake, we continue to forecast minimal snowfall
farther south into the secondary Snowbelt, but as always with lake
effect we'll keep a close eye on the expected wind direction and
snowfall placement as the event approaches.

Outside of the lake effect, the trough passage may bring a few
flurries or snow showers elsewhere late Thursday night into early
Friday with minimal to no accumulation. Lake effect from Lake
Michigan may bring flurries into northwest Ohio into Friday. Highs
on Friday will be in the low-mid 20s. Another cold night Friday
night, with lows in the 10s.

Saturday will be a nice day with departing high pressure, southerly
flow and some sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 30s / lower 40s.
Strong warm and moist advection, along with upper jet support ahead
of an approaching Arctic front will bring rain into the area from
west to east Saturday evening into Saturday night, with categorical
POPs for all areas overnight as models remain consistent in showing
rain across our entire area. We'll continue to watch for a few
pockets lingering near freezing in interior Northeast OH or
Northwest PA right as precip arrives Saturday night, but any mixed
or freezing precip will be localized or brief as strong warm air
advection causes a large majority of the precip Saturday night to
fall as rain. Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s in PA to mid
30s in Northwest Ohio early Saturday evening before warming to the
mid 30s to lower 40s by Sunday morning on the strong warm air
advection.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
The long term period begins on Sunday as a generally weak system
exits east of the area. Anticipating precipitation in the form of
rain for much of the day Sunday, before mixing in with snow by
Sunday evening as a strong cold front ushers in perhaps the coldest
air of the winter thus far.

A brief lull in precipitation is possible immediately behind the
front late Sunday evening/early overnight, before lake effect snow
potential ramps up across the snowbelt on Monday, persisting into
Tuesday. Forecast 850 mb temperatures will be at -20 degrees C or
just below at times, in addition to persistent and well-aligned west
to northwest boundary layer flow across Lake Erie. A well-saturated
DGZ with lift maximized in this area will allow for widespread lake
effect snow showers throughout the day on Monday across the entire
snowbelt. At this time, the best potential for heavy snow appears to
be across NW PA and into western NY with better moisture profiles
and equilibrium heights pushing 8 to perhaps 10kft.

High temperatures on Monday may struggle to get out of the teens
across the entire area with wind chills in the single digits to near
0. On Monday night, low temperatures will drop into the single
digits with wind chills holding near 0 to perhaps slightly below 0.
High temperatures will slightly rebound across the western half of
the area on Tuesday with low to mid 20s, though teens remain a
possibility across NW PA. On Wednesday, another clipper system may
affect the eastern Great Lakes, setting the stage for another round
of potentially snowy weather.

.AVIATION /06Z Thursday THROUGH Monday/...
MVFR ceilings cover most of the region in the wake of the cold
front. There have been a few flurries near and east of a line
from Marion to Cleveland. The better chance of snow looks to be
near KERI through about 09Z then shifts northward into western
NY. Expect to see some IFR conditions with the heavier snow at
KERI. All locations will attempt see ceilings lift through mid
morning with VFR conditions likely. This may take until early
afternoon for locations near KERI.

Westerly winds are expected at 14 to 20 knots through mid
morning then decrease through the day as they become
southwesterly. Gusts will be strongest through sunrise, mainly
along the lakeshore with 25-30 knots common. For the afternoon
gusts may be around 20 knots at times.

Outlook...Non-VFR likely with lake effect snow/clouds
Friday, then lingering into Friday night. Another chance of
non-VFR expected Saturday night into Sunday. Lake effect returns
for NE OH/NW PA Sunday night into Monday with non-VFR expected.

.MARINE...
The active marine pattern continues across the lake this evening
with no headline changes for this update. Westerly Gales will begin
to subside by this evening and overnight, from west to east across
the lake. A Small Craft Advisory will be needed directly following
the Gale as winds and waves will remain elevated into Thursday. A
brief lull in Small Craft conditions are possible late Thursday,
although they quickly return Friday morning, persisting for much of
the day Friday as northwesterly winds of 20 to 25 knots arrive
across the lake. By Saturday, southerly winds will increase to
around 20 knots, shifting towards the west and northwest by Sunday,
and increasing into the 20 to 25 knot range and thus introducing the
next potential for Small Craft headlines.

In addition to the Gale this evening and overnight, water levels are
already below the critical mark of 17 inches across the western
basin of Lake Erie. Water levels will continue to fall this evening
and overnight, peaking to perhaps as low as 2 feet below low water
datum.
