.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move northeast from Ohio tonight across the
lower Great Lakes. A quick moving trough will move east across
the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Wednesday night. Low pressure
will slowly move east across the northern Great Lakes Thursday
into Friday while high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
905 PM Update...
Not a major overhaul, but did rework the hourly temperatures
over the next 6 hours and subsequent weather. Mainly rain across
the region which should continue, except for the far western
zones and far eastern zones as well. Light accumulations
possible in the eastern halves of the NW PA counties, primarily
off pavement. POPs unchanged and expect precipitation to exit
west to east tonight.

Original Discussion...
Radar returns continue to expand across the local area late this
afternoon ahead of low pressure moving northeast towards the
lower Great Lakes. Precip type forecast is tricky over the next
several hours, although precip should be light enough to
preclude any widespread surface impacts. Soundings support a
snow/rain mix that will likely begin in most areas as light snow
with wet bulbing effects below the cloud layer at the onset.
Dewpoints and resultant wet bulb temps increase this evening
which would support more of a light rain setup outside of
heavier precip bands which would likely be predominantly snow.

The initial warm sector precip shield will push east out of the
eastern areas later this evening, but lighter precip returns
will expand from the west as the surface low moves over Lake
Erie and 500 mb jet energy lifts northeast from the Ohio Valley.
The bulk of the precip will shift northeast out of the area by
daybreak Wednesday. Most areas will not see much if any
accumulation, but some higher terrain of northeast OH and
northwest PA could see dusting to a little less than an inch
overnight. Lows tonight will be in the low 30s.

Southwest flow behind the low and cold air advection will begin
to produce lake effect banding through the day Wednesday. The
long axis fetch will keep most of the banding confined over the
lake to the lakeshore areas of far northeast OH and northwest
PA. Thermal profiles support mainly rain for the first half of
the day but gradually transitioning to a rain/snow then snow
regime, although the bulk of the snow and resultant accumulation
will occur starting Wednesday evening. Highs Wednesday will be
in the mid 30s to low 40s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A busy period, with lake effect snow concerns the main forecast
challenge. The forecast remains fairly on track for now.

*Summing Up: A westerly flow lake effect event organizes Wednesday
afternoon and evening, peaking in intensity overnight Wednesday
night into early Thursday near the I-90 corridor east of Cleveland
and through northwest PA. The lake effect may hug the immediate
lakeshore and struggle to push inland the first half of Wednesday
night, but is expected to push a bit farther south and southwest
late Wednesday night into early Thursday. The lake effect is
expected to lose some intensity and organization Thursday morning.
Expect any significant precip to shift northeast and be over the
lake and into western NY by Thursday evening. Snow rates in
organized bands can easily reach or exceed 1 inch per hour late
Wednesday evening through early Thursday, and this will be the most
impactful window of the event with impacts likely to the Thursday
morning commute. Where persistent snow bands occur storm total
snowfall in excess of 6" is likely, but as always with lake effect
amounts will vary and not everyone will see the big snow, even in
the "snowbelt".

*Where: The greatest totals are expected to occur in parts of Erie
and northern Ashtabula Counties, with parts of Lake, extreme
northern Geauga, and northern Crawford also in the game for a
heavier accumulation. Lighter amounts may occur as far south/west as
eastern Cuyahoga County and northern Trumbull County, along with the
rest of Geauga and Crawford Counties.

*Main Uncertainties: Where exactly the lake effect bands set-up, and
if they remain just offshore or along the immediate lakeshore for
several hours Wednesday night before pushing inland. The north trend
noted in the previous discuss has seemingly halted, and confidence
is increasing that portions of the watch will see substantial
accumulations. The other source of uncertainty is precipitation type
and how efficiently snow can accumulate, especially near the lake.
Locations inland from the lake should change to all snow and begin
accumulating under steadier/heavier bands Wednesday evening. Near
the lakeshore will remain near or just above freezing for much of
the event, but heavy banding may sit near the lakeshore at times
which can overcome the marginal temperatures and still lead to
impactful accumulations closer to the water.

*Headlines: The Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Wednesday
evening through Thursday evening for Ashtabula and Erie Counties. On
the balance, parts of these two counties (especially Erie) have the
greatest potential to see warning criteria snow. Because the north
trend in band placement has seemingly stopped for now, the Watch has
been expanded to include Lake and Crawford Counties where low-end
warning criteria amounts remain in the forecast for parts of each
county. Advisories are likely for these two counties, and warning
criteria amounts are possible in parts of these counties (especially
eastern Lake and northern Crawford). Geauga will quite possibly need
an Advisory, but the risk for warning criteria amounts is lower and
the greatest potential for that would be the very northern tip of
the county. Will need to watch if banding looks to briefly get into
northeastern portions of Cuyahoga County near the Thursday morning
commute, but confidence in this occurring is much lower.

*Outside of the lake effect: Mostly cloudy, cold, and a bit breezy.
It won't be completely snowless, as weak/fast-moving disturbances
can bring scattered snow showers Wednesday night into pre-dawn
Thursday, and then again later Thursday afternoon. Some dustings may
occur with this activity.

*Meteorological Stuff: Lake effect parameters become quite favorable
for intense snow for several hours Wednesday evening through early
Thursday, with moisture depth and inversion heights to 10-15k feet
and lake-induced CAPE of 500-800 J/KG. Winds will be fairly well-
aligned, with strong convergence helping to focus an intense single
band near the southern Lake Erie shoreline. The strongest lift is
just below the DGZ through the event, but some lift is expected to
get into a cloudy DGZ...this, along with the otherwise strongly
favorable parameters, can lead to snow rates near or over 1" per
hour in organized bands late Wednesday evening through early
Thursday. Conditions become less favorable during the day Thursday
behind the shortwave due to a bit of northwesterly shear and
subsidence, which along with some daytime "heating" will lead to
accumulations slowing. There may be a brief uptick later Thursday as
winds start backing ahead of the next shortwave and as better
moisture returns, but bands should be transient by this point with
additional accumulations probably modest.

Still tough to figure out exactly where the dominant single band
sets-up ahead of the approaching shortwave and surface trough
Wednesday evening. Suspect it will at least remain onshore over Erie
County PA, but we often see bands lift north more than modeled ahead
of an approaching shortwave so it is possible northeast Ohio
completely dries out for a time Wednesday evening/night. This has
ramifications on how heavy accumulations will be be across parts of
Lake, northern Geauga, Ashtabula, and northern Crawford Counties,
though these areas should at the least get a burst of accumulating
snow later Wednesday night into early Thursday as the shortwave
moves by and allows winds to turn slightly more onshore.

In terms of precip type/snow ratios/accumulations, especially near
the lake, that still remains a bit of a wrinkle. With 850mb
temperatures starting Wednesday near -7C and cooling to -9 or -10C
by early Thursday, locations away from the lake should be cold
enough for any steadier/heavier bands to fall as all snow and
accumulate Wednesday evening and beyond. Near the lake is tricky,
however, winds may remain somewhat offshore ahead of the approaching
trough axis for part of Wednesday night which would mute any warming
marine influence until winds turn a bit more onshore towards early
Thursday. In addition, snow rates near or over 1 inch per hour in
more intense bands can overcome the marginal temperatures and lead
to impactful accumulations. Once bands push inland and lose some
organization Thursday morning, the mild lake may regain its
influence for the lakeshore communities.

As winds briefly turn more onshore early Thursday behind the
shortwave, a brief push of accumulating snow may push as far
south/west as parts of eastern Cuyahoga County, the rest of
Geauga/Ashtabula Counties, extreme northern Trumbull County and the
rest of Crawford County PA. This may impact the Thursday morning
commute, but shouldn't last long enough to rack up the types of
accumulations that are possible in parts of Lake, Ashtabula, Erie,
and northern Crawford Counties where the watch is in effect.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Lake effect largely blows up the lake through Saturday, with colder
than average and mainly dry weather for our area. Should see some
sunshine at least. A cold front approaches Saturday and crosses
Saturday night. Moisture is limited by a few snow showers may occur.
Winds turn west-northwest into Sunday behind this front, which could
bring a return of accumulating lake effect snow east and north of a
CLE-YNG line late Saturday night into Sunday. A brief event before
ridging starts building in Sunday night, but instability over the
lake looks strong so a brief window of decent lake effect is
possible. High pressure over the Ohio Valley dries most of our area
out Sunday night through Tuesday, though lake effect could still
clip the Erie, PA lakeshore at times in this period. Temperatures
well below average through the period, with lows likely in the 10s
away from the lake Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights.

.AVIATION /06Z Wednesday THROUGH Sunday/...
IFR ceilings gradually lift to MVFR after around 12Z as winds begin
to increase out of the west southwest, also eliminating any lower
visibilities from BR across the region. Simultaneously,
precipitation will be exiting to the northeast as the surface low
responsible for the conditions tracks out the area in the same
direction. MVFR ceilings 1-2kft will be the norm for most locations
through the latter half of the forecast with primarily dry
conditions taking hold except for ERI where the transition to lake
effect will begin occurring after 13Z. Winds will potentially gust
15-25kts at ERI and CLE.

Outlook...Non-VFR likely in lake effect snow Wednesday night
through Friday, best chance in Northeast Ohio and Northwest
Pennsylvania.

.MARINE...
Brisk cyclonic flow develops over the lake late tonight through much
of the period, with several trough/cold frontal passages through the
weekend leading to winds veering between southwest and northwest. A
long duration Small Craft Advisory kicks in early Wednesday and is
in effect essentially until further notice east of the islands. Near
gales are possible Saturday night as a stronger front moves across
the lake. Otherwise, the lake will be rough for the next 6-7 days
but no headlines outside of the Small Craft.
