.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure exits eastward today as a low moves east-northeastward
from the northern Great Plains toward Lake Superior. This low
will then move northeastward toward James Bay and far-northern
Quebec on Saturday, allowing the trailing cold front to sweep
eastward through our region between about daybreak and midday.
Behind the front, a high pressure ridge builds from the central
United States through Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
12:30 PM Update...

Lowered dew points this afternoon based on observations, so
expect a slower rise in dew points as warm air advection
increases this afternoon into tonight. Also slowed the onset of
showers a bit late this evening based on the latest HREF members
and ensembles. Still expect the bulk of the showers to move in
after Midnight, then progressing west-east across the region
quite rapidly.

9:30 AM Update...

Cloud cover has increased faster than expected this morning
associated with mid-level moisture advection and isentropic
ascent ahead of a warm front. Increased cloud cover the rest of
the day to reflect this since warm/moist advection will continue
to ramp up as the mid/upper shortwave trough digs into the Upper
Midwest with the surface low deepening as it approaches Lake
Superior. Light radar returns this morning are not reaching the
ground due to low-level dry air, but could see a few showers in
far NE Ohio and NW PA by this afternoon as the warm front
continues lifting through.

Original Discussion...

High pressure at the surface and aloft exits E'ward today as a
shortwave trough approaches from the interior northwest U.S. and
northern Great Plains. Simultaneously, the surface low accompanying
the shortwave should develop ENE'ward from the northern Great Plains
toward Lake Superior and deepen, which will contribute to a
tightening MSLP gradient in our CWA. This low's trailing cold front
will approach from the northern and central Great Plains.
Moist isentropic ascent aloft, ahead of the shortwave trough,
will allow abundant cloud cover to continue to overspread our
area and lower/thicken gradually from the west. Primarily fair
weather is expected today. However, a few sprinkles may occur;
mainly this afternoon and early evening. Breezy S'erly surface
winds associated with low-level WAA on the backside of the
departing ridge and limited daytime heating should allow highs
to reach the mid 40's to lower 50's late this afternoon. The
coolest readings are forecast in the higher terrain of NW PA.te

The aforementioned shortwave trough advances from the northern Great
Plains to the eastern Great Lakes tonight through Saturday morning.
At the surface, the accompanying low should deepen further as it
moves NE'ward toward James Bay. This should allow the cold front to
sweep E'ward across our CWA between about daybreak and midday on
Saturday. Periods of rain showers will overspread our CWA generally
from west to east tonight as the cold front approaches and is
preceded by a warm conveyor belt undergoing isentropic ascent
aloft while tapping into appreciable moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico. Low temperatures should only reach the 40's as breezy
S'erly surface winds and continued low-level WAA contribute to
limited nocturnal cooling. Between daybreak and midday on
Saturday, scattered to widespread rain showers should end
quickly from west to east as the cold front sweeps E'ward and is
followed by a stabilizing surface ridge building from the
central U.S. High temperatures should reach the mid 40's to
lower 50's before temperatures drop via notable low-level CAA
behind the front. Between midday and nightfall Saturday evening,
a longwave trough aloft overspreads our CWA from the west as
the aforementioned shortwave trough moves NE'ward toward the
Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the surface low advances toward
far-northern QC. At the surface, the high pressure ridge builds
from the central U.S. Primarily fair weather is expected.
However, continued CAA, a WNW'erly mean low-level flow, and 850
mb temperatures cooling to ~-8C over ~7C Lake Erie will allow
bands of light lake-effect rain and/or snow showers to target
the primary snowbelt and vicinity. Meager/shallow low-level
moisture and a strong subsidence inversion accompanying the
building ridge will greatly limit lake-induced CAPE and precip
intensity. Any slushy snow accumulations during the late
afternoon/early evening should be a half inch or less and
confined to the higher terrain of NW PA. Temperatures should
tumble to the lower to mid 30's by nightfall.

Important note for Saturday: Strengthening low-level winds and
CAA with height, and resulting steepening of low-level lapse
rates, should allow mechanical mixing of the boundary layer to
easily tap into stronger flow aloft and yield westerly post-
front surface gusts up to 35 to 45 mph, especially for several
hours following the cold front's passage. A Wind Advisory may be
needed, especially within a few miles of the Lake Erie shore
from northeastern Cuyahoga County through Erie County, PA, where
onshore peak gusts may easily reach 45 to 50 mph given the
expectation of fairly-deep convective mixing of the marine
boundary layer as CAA occurs over relatively-warm Lake Erie.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
After a very blustery Saturday across the region, the winds will
slowly decrease Saturday evening and overnight as high pressure
builds in over the Ohio Valley. There may be some lingering
scattered light lake effect snow showers for the favored primary
Snowbelt area Saturday evening. Any lake effect will quickly fade
away as drier air moves and the winds slowly relax coming from the
west with a gradual west-southwest shift later in the night. Lake
effect clouds will be slow to erode away Saturday night with a
gradual clearing trend for the Snowbelt region through early Sunday.

Sunday is looking like the better day of the weekend with generally
mostly clear to fair skies for the entire area. We will still have
some breezy conditions as high pressure begins to pull away from the
region. Southwest winds will once again increase by the Sunday
afternoon 10 to 15 mph with slightly higher gusts possible over
northwest Ohio and closer to the lakeshore areas. Despite the
sunshine and an overall decent weather on Sunday, the afternoon
temperatures will likely struggle to climb out of the upper 30s.

Monday will also be a rather decent day for early December and
fairly close to our seasonable average temperatures for this time of
year. We will still have the influence of an exiting high pressure
system near the Mid-Atlantic region and breezy southwesterly winds
10 to 15 mph. We will start out with morning sunshine but clouds
will be increasing on the horizon during the afternoon ahead of the
next storm system to impact our weather by mid week. A low pressure
system will start to develop near the Mid-Mississippi River Valley
region and begin tracking northeastward into the Lower Ohio Valley
region by late Monday night. We will also start to see an increase
of low level moisture ahead of this low pressure system as well as
late Monday night as well as a chance for a few scattered light rain
showers.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The general solutions from the forecast model guidance shows a very
large and broad upper level trough across much of the north central
CONUS into the Great Lakes region by early to middle of next week.
Our region will start out in a broad southwest flow aloft on Tuesday
under the large trough. There is fairly good agreement that a low
pressure system will track northeastward across the Ohio Valley and
through the eastern Great Lakes region Tuesday through early
Wednesday. As this low tracks over our area and close by, there will
also be a cold front slide through Wednesday morning. Rain chances
will be likely Tuesday with scattered showers and temperatures in
the 40s during the day. There is some slight variations and timing
uncertainty regarding the mid week cold frontal passage and if that
may transition post frontal precip into light snow showers late
Wednesday into Wednesday night. This time window in the forecast
guidance becomes more uncertain as the latest ECMWF is starting to
show a different pattern shift compared the GFS and Canadian. At
this time, we will keep a broad mention of scattered precip later in
the week with light rain and or snow possibly which will highly
depend on the track of the next storm system moving through the Ohio
Valley. Needless to say, uncertainty exist towards the end of next
week.

.AVIATION /18Z Friday THROUGH Wednesday/...
VFR will continue the rest of today with a steady increase in S
to SW winds ahead of a strong cold front. This front will cross
from west to east late tonight with winds abruptly veering to W
to SW and becoming very gusty. Expect W to SW winds of 20-25
knots tonight and Saturday morning gusting to 35-45 knots at
times. Still expecting some intense low-level wind shear with
the frontal passage tonight as well given a 60-70 knot 850 mb
jet streak. Most of the rain showers will be confined to a 3 to
5 hour window ahead of the front late tonight and Saturday
morning, but used VCSH ahead of and behind the main band of rain
to cover scattered showers. Periods of MVFR cigs and vis will
accompany the rain and frontal passage late tonight into
Saturday morning. Think that CLE and ERI have the best chance to
stay at VFR vis due to downsloping. Rapid drying is expected
behind the front Saturday morning, but periods of MVFR will
linger into the afternoon, especially east of I-71 and I-77.

Outlook...Surface gusts up to 30 to 40 knots are possible
through early evening on Saturday. Non-VFR possible in rain
and/or snow showers Monday afternoon through Tuesday.

.MARINE...
Our brief window of relatively less impactful weather on Lake Erie
is right now before strong gusty winds and potential Gales return
tonight into Saturday. Another fast moving and strong low pressure
system will track trough the Upper Great Lakes region with a
trailing strong cold frontal passage late tonight into Saturday
morning. Southerly winds will increase today 15 to 25 knots. Winds
with become southwesterly tonight and increase up to 25 to 35 knots
later tonight ahead of the cold front. Behind the frontal passage
early Saturday morning, winds will become westerly with potential
Gales over most of the Lake late tonight into Saturday. There is a
Gale Watch posted and may likely need to be upgraded to a warning
later today if the current forecast trends with winds remain the
same. Waves heights will increase up to 8 to maybe 14 feet out in
the open basin of the lake late tonight through Saturday. The strong
southwest to west winds will also create a critical low water
level for the western basin of Lake Erie later tonight and
Saturday. A low water advisory will also be needed with future
marine updates. Winds and waves will slowly decrease Saturday
evening and Saturday night, but Small Craft Advisories will
likely be needed through the night as 15-25 knot W winds will
keep waves at 3-5 feet. High pressure Sunday through Monday will
drive lighter S to SW winds of 15-20 knots Sunday and 10-15
knots Sunday night and Monday. Lighter winds will gradually
become W to NW Monday night and Tuesday.
