...18z TAF Aviation Forecast Update...

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong cold front passes Sunday, likely stalling over central
Ohio as a wave of low pressure develops and moves through the
CWA Monday. Chilly high pressure controls through midweek.
Warmer for the end of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
900 am Update...
No changes this morning.

Previous Discussion...
Gusty shower setup coming as low pressure winds up over the central
plains pushing northeastward into the northern great lakes Sunday.
Plenty of wind in the low/mid levels with an 80kt 850mb jet Sunday
morning to get to the surface via either mixing or convective
activity. Some modest SB CAPE at 200-400J/kg from the NAM to assist
Sunday morning with possible thunder, but this should be limited to
the western zones and not expecting severe. Showers will probably be
fairly limited into perhaps a couple of separate lines coming
through, and should move fairly quickly. Cold frontal passage with
the pressure trough and wind shift is likely to be in the 15-18Z
time frame Sunday. It is possible the front will stall over the
far southeastern zones late in response to a developing wave of low
pressure off to the southwest.

With the wind, hitting the 40kt wind mark in the gusts early Sunday
morning ahead of the cold front, but the warm sector in general
might have a challenge to get stronger winds to mix down
efficiently. Had this occur during better heating hours to get
better boundary layer mixing to assist the upgliding nature of warm
advection, might have had to consider an advisory sooner. Much of
the wind will probably be in the descending cold air advection
behind the front.

Much warmer temperatures today in surging 850mb temperatures with
some peaks of sun. Low 70s possible in the southwest zones,
otherwise widespread 60s with far NE OH and NW PA lagging a bit in
the mid to upper 50s. Could be even warmer Sunday prior to front
Passage for the eastern zones, and timing will play a role in that
extent.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Locally, we a receive a short precipitation-free break Sunday night
in the wake of a departing system. The cold front from the previous
system stalls out and settles in the vicinity of the southeast part
of the CWA. Low pressure develops along this cold front over the
southern Great Plains Sunday night, lifting northeast to the Ohio
Valley by 12Z Monday. A potent mid-level trough will approach the
area from the west on Monday, with positive PVA across the area on
Monday. The upper-level jet stream will be favorably positioned,
providing significant upper-level divergence, particularly during
the morning hours on Monday. A strong low-level jet of 50-70 knots
at 850mb will lead to strong moisture advection, with forecast PWAT
values expected to reach 1 to 1.25 inches by Monday. To place this
into context, NAEFS PWAT is at the 99th percentile and mean
integrated water vapor transport (IVT) is in the 99.5th percentile
suggesting that moisture advection and resulting moisture content is
near the climatological max for this time of year. The above
environmental conditions will lead to this low pressure system
producing a wide area of rain early Monday morning through the
afternoon hours, with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall
expected. A swath of 1 to 1.5 inches is likely across a large
portion of the CWA, with a chance for up to 2 inches - NBMv4.1 has a
20-40% chance that parts of central Ohio observe 2 inches of rain.
Antecedent soil conditions remain wet for parts of the area,
especially northeast Ohio, despite general improvement over the past
week or so. Wet antecedent conditions and periods of moderate to
heavy rain is likely to lead to at least some minor flooding for the
area, especially parts of central Ohio. There is still some
variability in the location of the QPF axis but at this point,
confidence is high in least a large swath of 1"+.

The surface low quickly moves off to the east, located along the New
England coast by Monday evening. The vort max associated with the
mid-level trough passes overhead Monday evening. Winds veer to out
of the northwest by Monday afternoon/evening as these features move
to the east, with ensuing cold air advection rapidly dropping
temperatures to below freezing Monday evening/night. Wraparound
moisture from the low will lead to at least scattered showers
sticking around through Monday afternoon/evening with rain changing
over to snow during this time. Northwest flow of colder air aloft
will likely lead to minor lake-induced instability and lake-
enhancement of snow showers Monday night. The passage of a second
mid-level trough will shutoff lake effect/enhancement by Tuesday
afternoon. High pressure builds across the area Tuesday
afternoon/night, bringing at least a period of quieter weather.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Relatively quiet weather conditions persist through much of the long
term forecast as high pressure influences the area through at least
Thursday. Our next low pressure system is expected to impact the
region on Friday, though significant uncertainty in the track and
evolution of this system precludes any confidence in precipitation
type and general expectation of this system.

.AVIATION /18Z Saturday THROUGH Thursday/...
The main aviation concerns with this TAF update will the strong
gusty winds increasing tonight into Sunday. Another concern will
the potential for non-convective low level wind shear this
evening due to a strengthening low level jet right off the
surface. Overall VFR conditions are expected with mostly clear
or fair weather skies this afternoon. High and mid level clouds
will increase this evening and overnight. Ceilings will
eventually lower between 3K and 4K feet overnight as a cold
front moves in late tonight. With this update, we have kept the
ceilings at 3500 but could be a little lower into the MVFR

rain showers will be possible between 8z and 12z with a front
pushing in. Winds will increase this afternoon from the south 12
to 15 knots with gusts up to 25 knots possible. Southerly winds
will continue to increase this evening and overnight between 15
and 25 knots with gusts up to 35 knots possible lingering into
Sunday morning. We have the mention of low level wind shear this
evening, due to a strengthening low level jet between 00z and
06z.

Outlook...Areas of non-VFR in rain Monday, and then in snow
showers late Monday night.

.MARINE...
Low pressure moves northeast across the upper Midwest and northern
Great Lakes tonight and tomorrow, reaching the northeast by Sunday
night. In response, southerly winds will increase tonight, becoming
near 20 knots by Sunday morning. A cold front extending from the
aforementioned low will move east across the area, greatly
increasing wind speeds ahead, with and behind the cold front with
near gale-force southwest winds possible, especially Sunday
afternoon. There is some concern with the impact of the stable
marine layer preventing higher wind speeds, and in fact, the highest
wind speeds may occur in the nearshore zones where the impact from
the marine layer is weakest. Winds rapidly drop off Sunday
evening/night. Another low impacts the area on Monday, this time
south of Lake Erie. Much weaker winds are expected with this low
though, with speeds of around 15 knots expected with northeast winds
Monday and then northwest winds by Monday afternoon/night. Generally
light winds expected Tuesday onward as high pressure influenced the
area.

...ELEVATED FIRE RISK TODAY...

Gusty winds and low relative humidity values along with
unseasonably warm temperatures this afternoon will create an
elevated fire risk, especially for grassland areas. South to
southwest winds gusting 25 to 35 mph could allow fires to become
uncontrolled.

Please refer to your local and state burning laws and
regulations. Use extreme caution when burning, as fires may get
out of hand quickly in these conditions, and consider choosing
another day if possible. Be careful with hot equipment or
cigarettes near dry, grassy areas.
