.SYNOPSIS...
A series of low pressure systems will move up the coast through
Friday night. A strong cold front will cross the region Friday
night into Saturday morning. Cold high pressure will build into
the area through early next week. Another storm system could
affect the area by mid-week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
The region will remained under the influence of a cold air
damming regime, with a damming high over northern NC/Tidewater
VA area. This wedge pattern will result in thick cloud cover
over the region for the duration of the day. With thick cloud
cover temperatures will struggle to reach 60 in most areas. Have
lowered high temperatures a few to several degrees to account
for this. Shortwave energy aloft will support showers through
most of the afternoon, although the bulk of the activity will
remain offshore. A few isolated to scattered showers will reach
a little further inland, although rain amounts are not expected
to amount to much in terms of accumulation.

Tonight: The surface high will completely erode this evening
and the flow will steadily turn more southerly ahead of a strong
cold front organizing to the west. Based on hi-res model
guidance, we expect a relative lull in shower coverage this
evening ahead of the front. The main feature of the forecast
will be the arrival of a strong line of convection accompanying
the cold front which should start entering the interior of the
forecast area around 3-5 am. The strong line of storms should
then be aligned right across the middle of the forecast area by
approximately 5-7 am. Very impressive ambient wind fields will
produce an environment supportive of a notable severe threat.
Model soundings suggest that 0-1 km SRH values could be on the
order of 400-600 m2/s2 with bulk shear of 60+ knots. However,
instability could be hard to come by. Model progs generally
support MLCAPE struggling to reach 100-300 J/kg. But, with the
shear magnitude of mechanical lift along the cold front, we
could overcome this lack of instability. Needless to say, the
line of thunderstorms will be bring with it a damaging wind
threat as well as an embedded QLCS tornado threat. We will
continue to highlight the severe threat in the Hazardous Weather
Outlook. Even outside of thunderstorms, winds will quickly
strengthen late tonight ahead of the front. Frequent gusts into
the 25-30 mph range are expected as sunrise approaches.

Lake Winds: As a strong cold front approaches late tonight,
winds across Lake Moultrie will quickly increase. Frequent gusts
into the 25-30 knot range are expected by the predawn hours. A
Lake Wind Advisory has been issued, beginning late tonight.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Saturday: A strong cold front and deep upper level trough axis
will pass through the area in the morning. As is typically the
case this time of year, there will be plenty of bulk shear, and
helicity, but surface base CAPE values are marginal, generally
less than 500 J/Kg. However, the SPC outlook for Saturday is now
Slight risk for severe storms, with an area of Enhanced risk,
mainly our SC coastal region. Given the marginal CAPE,
confidence in severe storm potential is low to medium. With the
strong upper trough, strong low level shear convergence ahead of
the cold front, convection will likely form in a broken to
solid line ahead of the front. The highest threat looks to be
from strong wind gusts, but isolated tornadoes are also
possible. The front and associated convection/moisture is
expected to push east of the region by afternoon, with gusty
northwest winds and strong cold air advection. Highest
temperatures in the mid to upper 60s will likely occur in the
morning to early afternoon, then steadily fall during the mid to
late afternoon. Despite increasing sun by the afternoon, the
strong cold air advection and gusty winds will make it feel very
cool.

Saturday night through Monday: Surface high pressure is
expected to build over the area through Sunday, then begin to
move east/offshore Sunday night and Monday. Saturday
night/Sunday morning looks to be very cold, with a hard freeze
looking more likely well inland, and freezing/near freezing
temperatures even close to the coast. Mostly sunny and cool on
Sunday, with highs only in the lower to mid 50s. Another cold
night Sunday night, with freezing temperatures inland, and mid
30s to near 40 closer the coast. Conditions seem to be setting
up for frost. Thus, have added mention of areas of frost inland,
and may need to bring frost mention a little farther
east/closer to the coast with later forecasts. Temperatures
moderating back into the mid to upper 60s on Monday as the low
level flow veers to east- southeast and low level moisture
begins to increase.

Lake Winds: Gusty winds of 25 to 30 knots are expected across
Lake Moultrie early Saturday through Saturday evening. A Lake
Wind Advisory has been raised for this time period.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As the surface ridge continues moving well east of the region
Monday night and Tuesday, another upper trough and associated
weak surface low tries to form southwest of the area later
Tuesday, then move off the coast Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Blended model solutions seem to smear PoPs across a relatively
large time frame, from Tuesday night through Wednesday night.
Have kept the highest PoPs later Tuesday/Tuesday night with what
appears to be the passage of a warm front. The upper trough/low
center moves across the northern half of the region Wednesday
and early Wednesday night. Have kept chance/slight chance PoPs
for this period, but would not be surprised if those end up
coming down a bit with later forecasts, assuming the model
trends continue. A weak, deep layer ridge is shown by models to
build back over the region Thursday and part of Friday. Another
upper trough and chance for precip may approach the region later
Friday, but due to uncertainty, have left PoP mention out.

Temperatures expected to gradually warm back to above normal
through the period. Highs in the lower to mid 70s Tuesday and
Wednesday, then mid to upper 70s Thursday and Friday. Lows
generally in the 50s.

.AVIATION /19Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
KCHS/KJZI will likely remain IFR through the afternoon and into
the overnight hours. KSAV will start the 18Z TAF period at MVFR,
however they will likely drop to IFR around nightfall. Showers
will impact all three of the terminals on and off through the
afternoon. A lull in shower activity is expected from around 00Z
to 05Z, before ramping back up again ahead of an approaching
cold front. This cold front will bring thunderstorms to all
three of the terminals, within the 10 to 13Z time frame. After
the cold front moves through gusty west to northwesterly winds
will persist through the rest of the TAF period. Frequent gusts
in the 25 to 30 mph range can be expected. Ceilings will likely
lift to MVFR post FROPA, becoming VFR right around 18Z.

Extended Aviation Outlook: Saturday morning: Flight
restrictions and gusty winds will be likely within scattered to
numerous showers and some thunderstorms.

Saturday afternoon through Saturday night: Conditions are
expected to return to VFR behind the strong cold front by the
afternoon, but winds will remain gusty from the northwest,
gradually diminishing Saturday night.

Sunday through Monday night: VFR conditions expected.

Tuesday through Wednesday: another storm system may impact the
area, with flight restrictions possible, especially later
Tuesday and Tuesday night.

.MARINE...
Today through tonight: As we transition into the evening, winds
will turn more easterly, southeasterly, and then southerly with
time. The main period of concern will come late tonight as
winds quickly increase as a strong inland cold front approaches.
In fact, we could start seeing gusts to gale force across all
waters and the Charleston Harbor as sunrise Saturday approaches.
Seas will quickly increase in response, becoming 4-6 ft and
trending upward around sunrise Saturday. Therefore, a Gale Watch
has been issued for all of the local waters including
Charleston Harbor beginning early Saturday morning.

A strong cold front will be pushing through the waters by
Saturday afternoon. Expect Gale conditions to be ongoing all
waters, including Charleston Harbor., and persist into Saturday
evening. Winds and seas are expected to gradually decrease below
highlights by Sunday morning has high pressure builds over the
waters through early Monday. By later Monday, the surface ridge
is expected to move east of the waters, allowing winds to veer
to southeast through Monday night and early Tuesday. By later
Tuesday through Wednesday, models indicate another low pressure
system may move from southwest to northeast over the waters.
Although winds and seas are expected to increase a bit, the
latest guidance holds them below highlight levels.
