High pressure will build across the region overnight into
Thursday. Strong low pressure in the Midwest will draw an
occluded front across the region Friday night into Saturday
while the low tracks well northwest across Ontario and Quebec
provinces. Upper level disturbance will remain over the area
through early next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Update...
Surface high pressure will build across the region overnight,
while an upper level disturbance tracks north of Maine.
Generally expect partly cloudy skies across the forecast area
overnight. Could also have scattered flurries across northern
areas through the early morning hours. Low temperatures will
range from the upper single digits to the lower teens north, to
the mid teens interior Downeast with around 20 to the lower 20s
along the Downeast coast. Have updated to adjust for current
conditions along with overnight temperatures and clouds.

By Thursday, expect increasing clouds becoming overcast by
afternoon as surface flow turns E-SE in response to the
approaching large storm system across the Ohio River Valley.
Strong moisture advection will make for completely overcast
skies by mid afternoon. Expect highs to be in the mid 20s across
the north with the strongest cold air damming with mid to upper
30s along the Downeast coast and Southern Central Highlands.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Significant and Damaging Storm Expected at the End of the Week...
By Friday evening, 1040mb high pressure over Quebec will push twd
the Maritimes as the strong low pressure system approaches fm the
midwest. Sfc low will deepen overnight as it wraps up thru the Great
Lakes with the occlusion extending southwestward into NY State.
Precipitation moves into the region around midnight Fri night with
mainly rain along the Downeast coast and a rain/snow mix over
portions of interior Downeast with snow to the north at onset. As
warm air moves in aloft on strengthening LLJ of 35-45kts frozen
precip will begin to mix with freezing rain as it transitions
further to the north. Snow accums over portions of the Central
Highlands will only be a couple of inches by daybreak.
Temps by 12z Fri will have warmed up into the m/u 30s over interior
Downeast but will remain in the lwr 20s over the north. Cold air
damming will likely keep surface temps north of Houlton from warming
above freezing until closer to 18z with northern Aroostook not
reaching freezing until closer to 00z. This will keep frozen precip
across the north with cold air pretty much stuck in place. LL winds
will kick in early-mid afternoon and help overcome cold temps down
to the surface and allow frozen precip everywhere to change over to
all rain late afternoon and early evening.
Snow accumulations during the day Fri will mainly be to the west of
Rte 11 with a possible 3-5 inch amounts, with 1-3" expected closer
to the NB border north of Houlton. With the cold air damming
expected to the north of the Interstate 95 corridor ice
accumulations will range from a few hundredths to a tenth of an
inch by the time all precipitation changes over to rain.
Not only does the precip change to all rain it will be heavy at
times Fri afternoon into late Fri evening. Have also continued
with thunder mention along the coast Fri afternoon and evening.
Front moves through late Friday night with a drop to below
freezing in the Bangor Region right around midnight. The front
will move through the eastern zones by around 3 am. Heavy rain,
including the snowmelt, will likely leave standing water on the
roads and with a 12-degree drop in temps within 3-4 hours expect
a flash freeze to occur. H8 temps drop approximately 16C within
12 hours which is more than sufficient to result in water
freezing on the road surfaces before evaporating and/or
sublimating.
Following the front temps will be hard-pressed to rise much on
Saturday with light snow showers wrapping in behind. Winds will
remain out of the south with gusts to near 30 mph in the
afternoon.

.HYDROLOGY...
Moderate to high confidence in significant hydrological impacts
from the rain on snow flood event from Friday into the Holiday
Weekend. The storm system is posed to produce a widespread
1.25-2.5 inches of rain with locally higher amounts. The
heaviest rainfall is expected from mid Friday afternoon through
early Friday evening with the potential of 1-2 inches falling in
less than 6 hours across the portions of the Central Highlands
and the Bangor Region. This will fall into the Piscataquis and
Penobscot river basins.
Snow water equivalents (SWE) amounts across the area are generally 1-
3 inches, highest across the Central Highlands into Aroostook
County. Temperatures will be climbing into the mid-upper 30s
across the North and to the upper 40s to lower 50s across
Downeast Maine and the Bangor Region. Dewpoints should rise to
within a few degrees of the air temperatures. These high
temperatures/dew points combined with strong gusty winds will
enhance the rate of snowmelt resulting in significant snowpack
loss and compression. The snowpack across the North Woods into
the rest of the Crown has temperatures of 25-30F based on
latest satellite measurements. Across the Central Highlands into
the Greater Bangor area to Interior Downeast the snowpack
temperatures are in the 28-32F range. This means across the
north the snowpack will absorb more rainfall while southern
areas are highly likely to see significant melting and discharge
of the water content in the snowpack. Across the North the
discharge of the water in the snow will be dependent on the
strength of the winds and how much warm air intrusion makes it
inland. The Central Highlands to Downeast will see much, if not
all, of the snowpack erode outside of the higher elevations. The
snowmelt across the Highlands into Downeast areas impacting the
Piscataquis, Penobscot Rivers and smaller streams and creeks
could result in runoff of 0.75-2 inches of water strictly from
snowmelt. Much of the water melted across the entire forecast
area will run off due to the top layer of the ground being
frozen, especially in areas with snowpack. The rapid nature of
the snowmelt combined with heavy rainfall over frozen grounds
could lead to flash flooding, especially of normally fast
responding streams and known poor drainage areas.
Nearly all rivers and streams across the area are running Above
Normal to Much Above Normal (76th-90th+ percentile) with limited
storage capacity. River ensemble forecasts continue to highlight the
potential for the Piscataquis and Penobscot River basins to exceed
bankfull. This will include potentially significant impacts on the
smaller streams and creeks in these basins. The lack of extensive
ice cover over the rivers means it should not be a concern for the
flooding. It is still too soon to know the magnitude of flooding
but confidence is increasing in impacts especially in the
Piscataquis, Penobscot River basins and smaller Downeast basins. Any
river flooding will likely be ongoing into the holiday weekend
potentially impacting travel and those residents/businesses in flood
prone areas.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is the potential for minor to moderate coastal flooding with
the high tides Friday morning, Friday night and Saturday morning. A
limiting factor might be that there will not be a long duration of
mainly onshore flow, with the longest duration wind direction mainly
easterly - which has a more shore parallel than perpendicular
component to it. This will help limit the amount of water that piles
up during the initial part of the storm.
Depending on how much water is piled up with the tide cycle Friday
morning, which most likely should produce minor coastal flooding in
the more vulnerable locations, will help determine how significant
the coastal flooding is with the Friday night high tide. This is the
high tide cycle that will see the most significant wave action on
top of the surge. The amount of residual water from the morning high
tide cycle will likely be what differentiates between minor and
moderate coastal flooding and/or erosion with the Friday night high
tide. Wave heights and surge should be diminishing for the Saturday
morning high tide, so only at most minor coastal flooding is
expected then.
Given the uncertainty with the Friday night high tide, have elected
to keep the coastal flood watch up for now.
