Today through Friday night...
Another dynamic storm system will impact the area into the
weekend. This storm will come from an upper trough currently over
the Pacific Northwest coast. This trough will advance east and cut
a low off over western Wyoming Friday afternoon. This low will
then slide into the western Dakotas by Saturday. This will set up
a dynamic Spring storm with rain changing to wet snow, with
significant accumulation of snow looking more and more likely
over southeast Montana, northeast Wyoming and the western Dakotas,
along with the mountains and foothills.
For today, mid level heights fall through the day as the western
trough mentioned above slides inland. Moisture and energy will
stream out ahead of the trough and generate increasing rain shower
coverage for the western locations, with snow showers over the
higher terrain. Snow levels will be a little higher compared to
tomorrow and Saturday. This, along with the stronger forcing
holding off until Friday morning, should keep snow amounts to 2 to
4 inches in the Beartooth/Absarokas. Shower coverage will
increase over the west this afternoon and into the central zones
late tonight. Cape of around 300j/kg noses into the southeast
zones, so can not rule out an isolated thunderstorm over Powder
River and Carter counties this afternoon and evening.
The main show starts Friday and Friday night as the upper low cuts
off over Wyoming. Strong upper level divergence will send ascent
and moisture into the forecast area. The mountains will start
getting decent snow rates by late Friday morning, with rain
spreading from south to north over the entire area. Similar to
today, an isolated thunderstorm can not be ruled out over the
southeast Friday afternoon and evening, as a surface low wraps up
over southeast Wyoming and sends cape of 300j/kg into the
southeast once again. Powerful upward forcing moves over the area
Friday night. This will allow dynamic cooling and pull in colder
air from the north. This will allow rain to mix with and change to
snow Friday night. The Red Lodge and Beartooth foothills will tap
into this earlier, with wet snow kicking in Friday evening. Rain
should mix with and change to snow at Billings around midnight or
so. Rain will change to snow and become heavy at times over the
foothills and over southeast Montana Friday night. This heavy snow
will continue into Saturday (see extended discussion below). Snow
amounts in Billings Friday night will be extremely difficult to
pin point with warm ground and precipitation starting out as rain,
but grassy surfaces could see an inch or so of accumulation. Not
expecting a large impact on the roads for Billings, but this will
need to be monitore closely. Will also have to keep a close eye
on western locations and high hills for possible highlights for
this system. Will upgrade the Watch for the Beartooth/Absaroka
mountains to a Warning and leave the other Watches in place as
this system will have large impacts Saturday. TWH
Saturday through Thursday...
By Saturday morning, the upper low is closed off over NE WY and
western SD, and guidance seems to have a good handle on the track
from here, moving northeastward into eastern ND before exiting the
US into Canada Sunday night.
The main impacts west of a line from about Forsyth to Lodge Grass
will be heavily elevation dependent. Locations lower than about
5500 feet will likely only see a couple of inches of wet snow,
mostly confined to grassy surfaces. Locations above 5500 feet have
a higher likelihood of seeing significant snowfall, finishing out
the event with 12 to 18 inches - 6 to 12 inches for the Red Lodge
foothills.
East of the Forsyth-Lodge Grass line, significant snowfall and
blowing snow is expected across much of the area. As the low
deepens Sunday morning, there is some possibility of a band of
heavy snow producing snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour for several
hours. Current forecast calls for 5 to 8 inches over much of the
eastern zones Saturday morning alone. Snow will begin to taper off
Saturday evening and is expected to move out Sunday morning.
Storm total snowfall will range from 8 to 14 inches, with the
highest amounts over higher terrain. One notable area of
uncertainty is along the Yellowstone River valley. Snowfall totals
will be notably lower down into the valley. In addition to snow,
winds are expected to gust up to 30 mph during the heaviest
snowfall Saturday morning, and up to 40 mph saturday evening.
Significant blowing snow causing reduced visibility is expected at
least through Saturday night. Winds will begin to taper off by
Sunday morning.
By Sunday afternoon, ridging begins building back in with a
pleasant warm up to follow. Slight chance for some scattered
showers Sunday evening along the western foothills as a shortwave
trough embedded in the ridge moves through. The following few days
look mostly dry with some widely scattered showers possible as a
series of embedded shortwave troughs move through around the flow
of another closed upper low approaching the Pacific NW. This next
system moves in late next week. Expect highs next week in the
upper 50s to lower 60s, with 40s to lower 50s in the east.

VFR will prevail throughout the period across the most of the
area. Chance of scattered showers at KLVM beginning in the
morning, becoming more widespread by the afternoon into the
overnight hours. KLVM CIGS expected to lower to MVFR overnight and
into Friday morning. Expect periods of mountain obscuration S of
KLVM and KBIL this morning, becoming consistently obscured by
this afternoon.
