.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level low will produce a few periods of rain and wet snow
today along with some rain free time. A deep trough over the Great
Lakes and New England will then bring weather more reminiscent of mid
winter than early spring tonight through Monday, with periods of
snow, blowing snow, and very cold temperatures. Most locations can
expect light to moderate snow accumulations, but the higher terrain
east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will see locally heavy amounts
with lake enhancement.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Radar imagery showing a few scattered showers east of Lake Ontario
early this morning. A more concentrated area of rain across Western
NY, supported by strong DPVA ahead of a mid level closed low, will
move east/northeast across the area this morning, reaching the
eastern Lake Ontario region by early afternoon. Precipitation type
will be mostly rain at lower elevations with this, although some wet
snow may mix in across higher terrain where a light coating of slush
on the grass may occur this morning. There will be a temporary lull
behind this area of precipitation for several hours today before the
next, more widespread batch of precipitation arrives late this
afternoon and evening. High temperatures will reach the 40s in most
locations today, with upper 30s limited to high terrain.

The main forecast challenge continues to revolve around snow
potential tonight through Sunday and beyond. The pattern across
North America will become highly amplified this weekend, with a
strong ridge centered on the Rockies and a deep longwave trough over
the Great Lakes and east coast. A series of shortwaves will drop
through the longwave trough, each bringing colder and colder air
into our region.

Late this afternoon through Sunday a broad surface low stretching
from Quebec to Maine will consolidate and drift east into the Gulf
of Saint Lawrence. An area of deep wrap around moisture will cross
the eastern Great Lakes tonight and Sunday morning, while ongoing
cold advection cools the column. Deep saturation and low level flow
normal to the Chautauqua Ridge will produce a near ideal setup for
strong upslope enhancement across the higher terrain east of Lake
Erie. Forecast soundings show a deep 5-7K foot thick dendritic
growth zone tonight through Sunday morning. The airmass will grow
cold enough for lake enhancement as well from late tonight through
Sunday. The same will occur east of Lake Ontario across the Tug
Hill, although flow will veer more WNW by Sunday, with less
favorable lake enhancement following the initial development
tonight. Outside of the main upslope areas east of the lakes, expect
periods of snow tonight through Sunday and possibly a few meandering
bands of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay lake effect to produce minor
accumulations.

As far as accumulations go, the 00Z high-res guidance that handles
smaller scale upslope better than global guidance, continued an
upward trend, and this raises the chances of warning criteria being
reached for the higher terrain east of Lake Erie. Expect total
accumulations in the 8-14" range along a narrow zone of the
Chautauqua Ridge from Sherman to Perrysburg, and 7-12" across the
Boston Hills and the ridges of western Wyoming County. There will be
far less snow along the Lake Erie shore (including the Thruway), and
steadily decreasing snow inland from the Chautauqua Ridge. East of
Lake Ontario, expect 6-10" across the Tug Hill tonight through
Sunday. The setup is not quite as favorable here, so we have opted
for a higher end Advisory for the Tug Hill, although a small area of
warning criteria snow is possible near the Oswego/Jefferson/Lewis
County triple point. Outside of these two areas, expect
accumulations of 2-4" tonight through Sunday in most areas. The one
caveat, if a Lake Huron band were to stall over the Niagara Frontier
or south of Lake Ontario higher amounts are possible.

It will turn quite windy today through Sunday, and this will produce
blowing and drifting snow late tonight through Sunday once
temperatures drop into the 20s and the snow becomes lower density.

Lake effect snow in the wake of this system will continue Sunday
night into Monday. More on that in the short term section below.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Synoptic moisture and better support begins to pivot away from
eastern Great Lakes Sunday night. However cold northwest flow (850
hPa -16C to -19C) and upstream priming will continue to support
areas of accumulating lake effect snows southeast of the lakes
overnight. Gusty northwest winds will also lead to areas of blowing
and drifting snow. Factoring in the wind...wind chill values will
likely be found well below zero by sunrise Monday. Actual low
temperatures will be in the single digits to teens.

Monday...any organized lake effect snows in the morning will then
get disrupted by diurnal heating. A potent shortwave embedded within
the northwesterly flow then drops southeast across the Lower Lakes
in the afternoon into the evening hours. This feature will likely
flare up numerous snow showers across the area as the 500 mb cold (-
32C to -34C) pool drops through the eastern Great Lakes. Bufkit
profiles support this idea with steep low level lapse found through
600 mb of 8C to 9C/km. Have ramped up POPs to "likely" to reflect
this scenario. Could potentially see some pretty intense but brief
snow showers in the afternoon into the evening hours. It will also
be cold with highs peaking in the 20s. That's well below normal for
this time of year...should be in the 40s for daytime highs right
about now.

Snow showers will slowly diminish with the loss of daytime heating
Monday evening. Surface high pressure to our northwest will then
build in overnight which should lead to quieter and drier weather as
we head into Tuesday. It won't be any warmer though...lows again
will be in the single digits to teens across the Lower Lakes.

Tuesday...surface high pressure wedges in across the region and will
likely support continued quiet and dry weather. Temps will also
moderate after a very cold start to the day with readings found in
the 30s for daytime highs.

Tuesday night...surface high pressure departs off to our east and
northeast but will likely maintain dry weather in advance of a warm
front approaching the Lower Lakes. Not quiet as cold with lows
primarily in the teens.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Spring like pattern will develop during this period.

Trough will be reloading over the central CONUS while an upper level
ridge will builds east over the area Wednesday, with its' ridge axis
crossing the area Wednesday night. Meanwhile, low level return flow
around surface high pressure located off the Carolina coast coupled
with strong surface low pressure moving northeast into the Great
Lakes will help push a strong warm front across the region Wednesday
into Wednesday night. A low level feed of GOMEX moisture and strong
warm advection aided by a vigorous low level jet will bring the
chances for precipitation back to western and northcentral NY for
the mid week timeframe. Depending on the exact timing, there could
be a brief period of snow or a wintry mix at the onset before warmer
air moves in.

There may be a break in the precip sometime later Wednesday night
into the first half of Thursday as we get warm sectored in the wake
of the warm frontal passage. This will be short-lived however as
upper ridge slides east making way for the leading edge of the upper
trough to move east into the lower Great Lakes. At the surface, a
mature cyclone will move into the upper Great Lakes with its'
attendant cold/occluded front approaching from the west. Deep
south/southwesterly flow on the eastern side of the trough will
continue to draw GOMEX moisture northward across the lower Great
Lakes bringing the risk for rain showers back into the forecast
sometime Thursday along and ahead of the boundary. Cooler air will
filter back across the area Thursday night and Friday with any
leftover rain showers possibly mixing with wet snow across the
higher terrain Thursday night/Friday morning before temps warm.

Otherwise, highs in the 20s and 30s Tuesday will be replaced by 50
and 60s by Thursday, with a return to seasonable norms to close out
the work week.

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A concentrated area of rain will move into Western NY before
daybreak, then cross the rest of the region today, reaching the
North Country by early afternoon. Some wet snow may mix in at times,
especially across higher terrain. The rain and wet snow will drop
VSBY to MVFR at times, with a mix of MVFR/IFR CIGS. Following this
area of precipitation, there will be another temporary during the
early to mid afternoon across Western NY with areas of MVFR CIGS
continuing.

Fairly widespread precipitation will move back into the area late
this afternoon and this evening as deep wrap around moisture moves
into the eastern Great Lakes. Precipitation type will initially be a
rain/snow mix across lower elevations before sunset, but everything
will change to snow this evening with widespread MVFR/IFR in snow
tonight. The most persistent snow will fall across the higher
terrain east of Lake Erie and the Tug Hill east of Lake Ontario with
upslope and lake enhancement. VSBY in these areas may occasionally
drop to 1/2SM in moderate snow.

Outlook...

Sunday...Areas of IFR in periods of snow, with lake enhanced snow
east/southeast of the lakes.
Monday...Local IFR in lake effect snow southeast of the lakes,
with MVFR/VFR outside of lake effect areas.
Tuesday...VFR.
Wednesday...Areas of MVFR with rain likely. The rain may start as
a brief period of snow or wintry mix.
Thursday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of rain showers.

.MARINE...
A deep trough will become established across the Great Lakes and New
England through the weekend. Moderate southwesterlies today will
become westerly tonight, and then more WNW Sunday and NW Sunday
night, continuing all the way through Monday night. This will
produce a long period of Small Craft Advisory conditions on Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario today through Tuesday morning.
