.SYNOPSIS...
Conditions will gradually deteriorate later today as a pair of storm
systems will take aim on our region for the weekend. Clouds will
lower and thicken during the course of the day with some light rain
initially breaking out from west to east. The rain will change to
snow late in the day with steady widespread snow throughout Friday
night. Several inches of wet snow will accumulate by daybreak
Saturday with additional accumulations as the day wears on. The
highest accumulations will be from the higher terrain of the
Southern Tier and Finger Lakes to the Eastern Lake Ontario region.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
High pressure continues to dominate the region as just
intermittent cirrus sully the sky. This will be the case for a
few more hours before thicker and lower clouds currently poised
generally from Georgian Bay toward SE Lower Michigan push
eastward overnight. These clouds are in advance of the next
system to affect the area.

The region will remain dry going into Friday as surface high
pressure departs to the northeast. An inverted trough will move
into western and north central NY by Friday afternoon as low
pressure deepens across the southern Appalachians. Strong cold
air advection will track east across the Mid-West and Ohio
Valley through Friday. Light rain and snow is possible across
far western NY and close to Lake Erie beginning late Friday
morning. Moisture increases mid- late afternoon and mainly light
rain will spread further into western NY and into the eastern
Lake Ontario region. Temperatures will rise into the low to mid
40s Friday afternoon. Colder air will begin to filter into the
Niagara Frontier late Friday afternoon-early evening and rain
may change over to snow. Any snow through Friday will have
trouble sticking and therefore less than a half inch before
evening.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
...Accumulating snow likely Friday night and Saturday...

Widespread snowfall event expected Friday night through Saturday,
with some additional snowfall expected from northwest flow lake
effect Saturday night. Two separate shortwaves, one within the
southern stream and the other within the northern stream will be
head eastward Friday night. These features will eventually phase
over the mid Atlantic and Northeast by Saturday. In response, low
pressure will develop Friday night over the southern Appalachians.
This low will then strengthen and track up along the East Coast into
New England Saturday.

Surface temperatures early Friday evening will likely still be warm
enough to support rain or a rain/snow mix across much of the area
ahead of the approaching cold front. The exception may be across
portions of the Niagara frontier and closer to Lake Erie where the
start of wet-bulbing may have already transitioned the rain over to
wet snow. The surface cold front will cross the area from west to
east early Friday night. Once the boundary passes, any rain will
transition to snow very quickly and pick up in intensity. The
expectation is that by midnight or so Friday night that the entire
area will have transitioned over to wet snow.

Steady light to occasionally moderate snow will continue across the
entire area through the first half of Saturday. Snowfall rates are
not likely to exceed more than a half inch per hour. Although, there
is the possibility for some mesoscale banding on the western side
of the storm, as strong frontogenesis is expected due to the rapidly
deepening low which may bring enhanced snowfall rates.

Later Saturday afternoon and Saturday night as the storm starts to
pull off, lake enhanced snow will eventually go to pure lake effect
snow as 850 mb temperatures near -18C. This will maintain snowfall
to the southeast of the lakes and higher terrain.

As the storm deepens as it lifts into northern New England, winds
will increase with wind gusts of 40-45 mph possible Saturday into
Saturday night which will result in considerable blowing and
drifting snow with potential near white-out conditions at times.

The greatest snowfall totals continue to look to be focused east of
the Genesee Valley and also across the higher terrain east and south
of Buffalo off Lake Erie due to lake enhancement/upslope flow. These
areas are included in a winter storm watch as outlined below, not
only for snowfall of 7 inches or more, but also with the added
impacts due to the strong winds.

Deep coastal low that impacted the region during the first half of
the weekend will move into Labrador on Sunday. Expect a cold and
blustery day across the region to close out the weekend with any
leftover lake effect snow showers Sunday morning transitioning to
more of a general chance of some light snow showers and flurries for
the second half of the day owed to a strong push of WAA moving into
the region. The chance for a few snow showers will linger into
Sunday night across the North Country before mid level moisture and
a surface warm front push northeast of our area. Weak ridging builds
overhead with dry and milder weather expected for the start of the
new work week.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
More tranquil conditions expected overall with above above average
temperatures expected through the period.

Drier and milder day to start the work week as a warm front moves
well north of the area. A weak cold front then approaches from the
northwest Monday night. As the front approaches, there looks to be
the possibility for a weak wave to develop along the boundary.
Although this will be a weak and moisture starved system, it will
likely slow down the southeastward progression of the cold front.
Still expecting just the chance for some light rain and/or a mix of
rain and snow showers with the mid level trough/surface FROPA,
sometime Tuesday into the first half of Tuesday night. With regards
to p-type, any wet snow that does mix in will be mainly at night
and/or over the higher terrain.

Mild weather looks to continue through the second half of the
period. High pressure builds over the area bringing dry weather on
Wednesday. The high pushes east of our region on Thursday, however
will remain ridged across our region keeping western and
northcentral NY in between two systems. Southerly flow on the back
side of the high and rising heights aloft are a signal that temps
will warm even further by the end of the period.

Otherwise as noted above, temperatures will trend above average with
mainly 40s for daytime highs Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures rise
further with some lower 50s possible across the lower terrain south
of Lake Ontario by mid week, with these same areas approaching the
upper 50s to possibly near 60 by Thursday.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR conditions will continue through the first half of Friday.

Cigs will lower to MVFR levels Friday afternoon with light rain
initially breaking out from west to east. The rain will change to
wet snow during the afternoon and evening with conditions
deteriorating to IFR and LIFR levels...with the lowest flight
conditions coming from poor visibilities in moderate snow Friday
night.

blowing snow.
