.SYNOPSIS...
After another balmy and breezy day, attention is on sharp cold front
that crosses the lower Great Lakes late tonight. As the front slowly
moves over the region on Thursday, expect a steady soaking rain and
some thunderstorms. South winds will be strong and gusty ahead of
the front tonight into Thursday, especially across the eastern Lake
Ontario region. While most areas will pick up a half to one inch of
rain late Tonight through Thursday evening...amounts easily could
exceed two inches in the vicinity of the Tug Hill.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...Heavy rain and gusty winds as sharp cold front crosses...

Despite mid to high clouds, temps again have reached around 70 on
the lake plains to even the St. Lawrence Valley. Mid to upper 60s
elsewhere. Last day of these well above normal temps in a while it
appears. Sharp cold front is beginning to cross central Great Lakes
and will sweep over the lower Great Lakes late tonight. Temps in the
40s and 50s behind the front, a sign of what is to come in here
later Thursday into Friday. Along and ahead of the front, 40 to 50kt
low level jet and plume of deep moisture, higher PWATs is supporting
clusters of showers and even some thunder at times Upper Lakes to
Ohio Valley. Strongly forced front and height falls with deep upper
trough resulted in increasing thunder chances late tonight into
Thursday as front passes. Given wind fields could see very
gusty winds as the showers/thunderstorms as main front moves
through. SPC marginal risk remains to the east of here Finger
Lakes into SE NY where greatest instability is still forecast.

The combination of lift supplied by the nose of a 100 jet H25
jet...strengthening frontogentic lift and moderately strong
convergence in the low levels will result in 30-50 mile wide ribbon
of moderately heavy rain along and ahead of the front...most of
which occurs late tonight into mid morning Thursday over the western
counties and Thursday into early Thursday evening east of Lake
Ontario. No huge changes to going thinking in terms of rainfall
amounts. Southerly flow will lead to downslope/drying over northern
parts of WNY tonight, so heaviest rain tonight of possibly over an
inch will be across Southern Tier. The downslope shadowing will
carry over into Thursday morning across Genesee valley, but still
could see over 0.75 inch of rain, coming in a fairly short period of
time. Heaviest rain from this event still on track to impact the
eastern Lake Ontario region late Thursday morning through early
Thursday evening. Southerly winds result in enhanced upslope lifting
and resultant higher QPF for Tug Hill and western Adirondacks but
also could lead to downslope/drying and less rain over northern
Jefferson county, including Watertown and Fort Drum. Mainly will see
amounts of an inch to 1.25 inches east of Lake Ontario, but the
higher terrain will easily see over 2 inches, maybe even closing in
on 3 inches. However, a trend that is starting to show up is a bit
more progression to wave that was going to boost rainfall totals.
That focus now looks farther east. We'll see if the trends continue.
As of right now, based on expected totals and FFG, coordinated with
surrounding offices and opted to not issue a flood watch. Mention
continues in HWO though.

Along with the rain, strong low-level jet leads to wind gusts
tonight all areas at least 30-35 mph, likely more toward 40 mph in
the higher terrain of WNY and Finger Lakes. Downslope areas near
Chautauqua Ridge to the I-90 corridor in Chautauqua county may see
gusts over 45 mph evening into the early overnight before rain
arrives. Strongest gusts though appear to be setting up for eastern
Lake Ontario region north of Tug Hill and down the Black River
Valley. Gusts here late tonight into midday Thursday could reach 50
mph, so a wind advisory was issued.

Back over western NY, steady rain and chance for thunder will
end mid morning and there will be drying trend until late day
when more showers start to develop as cooler, moist air arrives
from the west in wake of the front. Cool and moist cyclonic flow
with H85 temps down to -1c (Lk Erie around 16c) supports a lake
response northeast of especially Lake Erie Thu evening through
late Thu night. 220-230 flow so most concentrated rain showers
will be aimed at the Buffalo Northtowns into Niagara and Orleans
county. Lake response off Lake Ontario will be directed more
into Canada instead of Jefferson county.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Throughout the end of the week and first half of the weekend a broad
closed upper level low over northwestern Ontario Friday morning will
become vertically stacked over the upper Great Lakes Friday night
before eventually rotating and sliding east across southern Ontario
Saturday and Saturday night.

Taking this pattern and breaking it down to a more local level, lake
effect rain showers across portions of the Niagara Frontier from
Thursday night will continue into Friday morning, though these will
not last for long as diurnal heating in combination with overall
warm air advection will act to lower heights and diminish activity.
The remainder of Friday will be on the dry side as a surface ridge
noses north into southern New York from the mid-Atlantic.

The mainly dry weather will continue into Saturday though, expect
cloud cover to thicken throughout the afternoon ahead of an incoming
front. Speaking of which, the aforementioned vertically stacked low
across southern Ontario will drape an occluded/cold front across the
Great Lakes Saturday, crossing the area Saturday night. With the
arrival of the front expect chances for rain showers to increase
from west to east, with amounts of a tenth to a quarter of an inch
of rain expected to fall across the region.

Otherwise, throughout this time daytime high temperatures will range
from the mid 50s to low 60s with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An upper level trough over the Great Lakes to start this period will
deepen further Tuesday as a deep 1.5 PV intrusion to 600 hPa passes
across the eastern Great Lakes. This -2SD trough Tuesday morning
will usher in some of the coldest air so far this autumn season
while also giving the prospects for snow.

Sunday, while shortwave energy is deepening the upper level trough
across the Western Great Lakes, the presence of the upper level
trough over our region along with some daytime sunshine/instability
will be enough to produce a few rain showers.

Monday a deepening surface low over southern Canada will swing a
cold front across our region. Rain showers upon this front will be
enhanced to the east and northeast of the Lakes as a much cooler
airmass filters into our region. As this airmass cools further
Monday Night (850 hPa temperatures dropping towards -5C to -7C)
these rain showers will likely transition to snow showers,
especially across the higher terrain. For reference the average date
for the first snowflake for our two climate stations is October 24th
(Buffalo) and October 23rd (Rochester).

Tuesday will be unpleasant as showers (rain or snow) will continue
across our region under a deep upper level trough. A shortwave
rounding the bottom of this upper level trough will bring broad
synoptic lift, along with over the lake instability to produce
showers. Temperatures will not climb much with highs only around 40F
to the mid 40s. A few spots on the Allegany Plateau may not even
rise out of the mid 30s. A brisk westerly wind will only add to the
unpleasantness. Lows Tuesday night will drop back into the upper 20s
to lower 30s. A deck of stratus clouds, along with scattered
precipitation should hold these already much below normal values
from lowering further.

Wednesday the axis of the upper level trough will begin to push
eastward. There will continue to still be scattered showers
Wednesday with the presence of the upper level trough aloft, but
with the core of the cold air now eastward temperatures will not be
as cold, with highs in the mid to upper 40s.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR conditions with thickening mid clouds will be found throughout
the region through this evening...as western and north central New
York will find itself between high pressure well off the coast and
an approaching cold front from the Upper Great Lakes.

Conditions will deteriorate later tonight...as cigs over the western
counties will lower to IFR to MVFR levels. The lowering cigs will be
accompanied by the onset of steady rain...which could drop vsbys to
MVFR levels in fog at times.

South winds expected to gust 25-35 knots tonight, strongest across
the higher elevations and to the lee of the Tug Hill across the
eastern Lake Ontario region...although low level cooling by the
widespread steady rain could help to decouple TAF sites from
the environmental winds aloft. In this scenario... significant
wind shear from 40-50kt winds aloft could become established.
Will continue to monitor this potential.

Outlook...
Thursday...Rain and associated MVFR/IFR...diminishing from west to
east Thursday afternoon and evening.
Friday...MVFR to VFR with a chance of showers...especially northeast
of the lakes.
Saturday...Mainly VFR.
Sunday...Mainly VFR. A chance of showers.
Monday...MVFR to VFR. Showers likely.

.MARINE...
As a sharp cold front approaches tonight...moderate to fresh
southerlies can be anticipated. This will produce very choppy
conditions, mainly well offshore.

The aforementioned cold front will then slowly cross Lake Ontario and
western New York on Thursday. While this will initially be marked by a
3 hour period of lighter winds that will veer to the southwest...winds
will then freshen several hours after fropa. As a result...SCA's will
likely be needed for Lake Erie later in the day into Friday. Meanwhile
conditions should largely remain below SCA criteria on Lake Ontario.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and north
central New York.

.DAY ONE...This afternoon and tonight.

Expect a widespread soaking rain and some thunderstorms to develop
late tonight as a slow moving cold front makes its way to western New
York...with the rain likely becoming heavy at times late across
portions of the Niagara Frontier and western Southern Tier.

South wind gusts tonight could reach over 40 mph, especially near
the Chautauqua Ridge to I-90 in Chautauqua county through the early
overnight hours, then across the higher terrain from western New York
to the Finger Lakes after midnight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday.

A widespread soaking rain, along with some thunderstorms, will
continue on Thursday morning as a slow moving cold front crosses New
York State. Rainfall could be heavy at times. Total rainfall amounts
through Thursday are forecast to range from two thirds of an inch to
an inch from the Niagara Frontier over to Rochester...to over an over
an inch across the Southern Tier and eastern portions of the Finger
Lakes Region. While such amounts will be unlikely to cause any flooding
issues...the rainfall should still be significant enough to cause
higher flows on smaller creeks and streams.

South winds may gust over 40 mph through mid morning over the higher
terrain of western New York to the Finger Lakes.
