.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will briefly build towards the area tonight with
mainly clear skies tonight. Winds will diminish, but still
remain breezy through the night. An approaching cold front will
bring the potential for showers and gusty winds Friday. Cooler
and unsettled weather is expected for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
A ribbon of very dry air in the lower and mid levels is now upon our
region behind the recently departed cold front. Virtually cloud free
conditions will continue through the evening as surface high
pressure noses into our region from the southwest. Upstream mid
level clouds over the west end of Lake Erie will pass across our
region later overnight. A tight pressure gradient will remain
overnight between the center of the surface high to the south and
upstream low pressure and this will maintain somewhat breezy
conditions through the night.

Friday, southwest winds will ramp up once diurnal heating can aid in
increasing mixing depths. There will be a window of several hours
from late morning through the afternoon as a 50-60 knot low level
jet crosses the area where we could see gusts get up into the 45-55
mph range, mainly downwind of the lakes. Will issue a wind advisory
as outlined below to cover this, with the strongest winds
likely to be from 10 am-4 pm off Lake Erie and 12-6 pm off Lake
Ontario. Winds not quite as strong elsewhere, but still windy
with gusts of 35-45 mph possible.

Winds will taper down Friday night as the low level jet shifts east
and diurnal heating ends. Precipitation chances though will be
increasing as the cold front slowly presses southward into the
region. Thermal profiles suggesting rain will be the primary
precipitation type, but some mix with wet snow is possible toward
Saturday morning across the higher terrain east of Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
A chilly and unsettled Easter weekend on the way (especially the
first half), with even the possibility for a little wet snow for
some areas Saturday night.

Wavy frontal boundary should be slowly moving southeast across our
area as we open the period. Expect a period of light rain as the
front moves through, with the bulk of the steadier rain pushing
toward the southeastern edges of our forecast area by late in the
day. There be some wet snow mixed in across the higher terrain
through mid morning or so before boundary layer temps warm owed to
diurnal heating. Rainfall amounts will range from around a tenth of
an inch across our northwestern zones where rain tapers off earlier,
with up to a third of an inch across the remainder of the region.
Highs Saturday will range through the 40s.

The mid level trough will pass across western and northcentral NY
Saturday night, with a fairly robust shortwave rotating through the
base of the trough as it passes through supporting continued chances
for at least scattered showers (rain changing to snow) through the
night. This will help usher in a very chilly airmass by mid April
standards with 850Ts dropping to somewhere in the neighborhood of -
10C to -12C. With this in mind, the already cool, moist cyclonic
flow aloft will also be able to take advantage of the relatively
warmer lake waters with at least some lake enhancement, if not pure
lake effect snow showers downwind of the lakes with the strong April
sun not a factor during the night. Upslope flow across the higher
terrain will only enhance precipitation chances further. Not
expecting too much in the way of snowfall, however may see a coating
to an inch or so, with the higher end amounts across the higher
elevations. Not out of the question that a few of the localized
"sweet spots" may receive a bit more in the way of snowfall. Cold
night on tap with lows ranging from the mid 20s to around the
freezing mark.

Easter Sunday will be a chilly one for sure as temperatures struggle
to reach the low and mid 40s, with some of the higher terrain
possibly not getting to 40. Good news is it will be a drier than the
first half of the weekend with any leftover rain and snow showers
early tapering off for areas south of Lake Ontario. However areas
east of Lake Ontario may possibly hang onto a few light rain showers
into the early and mid afternoon before the back edge of the upper
trough pulls east into New England.

High pressure surface and aloft then builds in Sunday night finally
drying things out. That said, it will be another cold night with
lows again ranging from the mid 20s to around the freezing mark.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The overhead longwave ridge axis will quickly shift east of the area
Monday morning as surface high pressure departs off the New England
coast. A deepening longwave trough over the western Great Lakes will
support a northern stream surface low which will track across the
Great Lakes region through Tuesday, as a southern stream surface low
across the Tennessee Valley rides up the New England coast. These
two systems will begin to phase as the main trough departs to the
east.

Monday will start off dry with surface high pressure still over New
England. A warm front extending from the aforementioned northern
stream low will then lift northward towards the area, with precip
chances returning from the southwest late Monday morning into the
afternoon. Surface temps may be just cool enough at the onset across
the higher terrain in the Southern Tier to see a few flakes, though
all precip should quickly changeover to rain by mid morning. The
bulk of the precip will likely arrive late Monday afternoon into the
first half of Monday night as the northern and southern stream
systems begin to phase. Still some notable discrepancies among the
latest 12z guidance on the details of the interaction between these
two systems, with the 12z GFS depicting a significantly weaker
southern stream low. If the stronger ECMWF and Canadian solutions
verify, could see some heavier QPF for eastern portions of the area
as the front begins to occlude.

Showers will move into the area from the west behind the more
stratiform precip late Tuesday night as wrap around moisture advects
back into the area. Temps may drop low enough across the higher
terrain by daybreak Tuesday to see some wet flakes mix back in with
any rain. Shower chances will linger throughout the day Tuesday as
the main trough axis clears the area from west to east. Surface high
pressure building across the Ohio River Valley under a weak upper
ridge will allow the area to dry out from west to east Tuesday
afternoon. Dry weather will then last through Wednesday, before the
next longwave trough crosses the Great Lakes region and brings
renewed chances for rain on Thursday.

Otherwise, cooler air remaining overhead will support daytime
temperatures in the upper 40s to mid 50s, and overnight low
temperatures in the 30s. A warmup is expected Wednesday night and
Thursday with the onset of WAA ahead of the approaching system.

.AVIATION /00Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
For the 00Z TAFS VFR flight conditions are found, this as surface
high pressure noses towards our region. The center of this high will
remain to our south and a gradient wind will continue through the
night.

Tomorrow, a 50-60 knot low level jet will move through the area.
With daytime heating increasing the mixing heights, areas downwind
of the lakes (KIAG, KBUF, KROC, KART) are expected to experience a
period of surface southwest flow gusts of 40-45 knots from about 14z-
22z. Ahead of a cold front a few showers will be possible late in
the TAF period, with ceiling heights lower towards MVFR late from
the north. Friday Night these ceiling heights will lower further to
IFR/low end MVFR with rain showers likely.

Outlook...

Saturday...Mainly VFR with a chance of showers.
Sunday...VFR.
Monday and Tuesday...Restrictions likely in showers.

Winds are beginning to decrease tonight, but a southwest gradient
wind will remain through the night between a surface high centered
to the south and low pressure to the northwest. As this first round
of small craft advisories come to an end, another round will be
reintroduced for tomorrow.

Southwest winds will strengthen again later tonight and Friday with
high end small craft advisory conditions and gale force winds gusts.
First on Lake Erie late tonight and then on Lake Ontario Friday
morning. Winds will peak during the afternoon hours with gusts and
waves diminishing through the evening.
