.SYNOPSIS...
Light rain will exit the North Country the region overnight. A cold
front will then cross the Lower Lakes today with renewed chances for
rain showers. A deep trough will then become established over the
Northeast over the weekend, with temperatures becoming progressively
colder. Rain and snow showers will become all snow Saturday night
and Sunday with accumulations likely, especially across the higher
terrain.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Rain over the North Country will exit the region early this morning.
A brief lull will then occur through mid-morning. Sfc low over
western Quebec will then send a weak cold front through the Lower
Lakes today with renewed chances for rain showers. Not overly cold
behind this front...850 hpa T's only down to -4C/-5C. With the
passage of the front...shower activity will dwindle a bit in
coverage for a brief period late this afternoon into this
evening.

Tonight...a potent shortwave will then drop southeast through
the Great Lakes which again will bring renew chances for
showers. It will also begin to become progressive colder as we
move into Saturday. Showers may mix with snow or chance over
completely to snow across the higher terrain late...minor
accumulations if any at all.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Decent model agreement on very sharp, compact shortwave diving into
mean upper level trough tracking from upper Plains on Friday
afternoon to the eastern Ohio Valley by daybreak Saturday. Though
bulk of PVA with wave stays across Ohio and Pennsylvania, secondary
area of forcing on northern side of the system late Friday night
into Saturday along with moist low-levels and west-southwest flow
off open waters of Lake Erie will promote light snow or mix of
rain/snow. A few showers will also occur to east of Lake Ontario.
H85 temps of -5c to -6c on Saturday are marginal for only snow, but
soundings point to mainly snow at higher terrain and mixed rain and
snow trying to change to just rain at lower elevations. Some slushy
snow accumulations could occur on cooler/grassy surfaces even during
daytime on Saturday across higher terrain of western NY. Chilly day
with highs only briefly bumping to the lower 40s lower Genesee
valley to northern Finger Lakes. Otherwise, temps will stay 40 or
lower.

Saturday night into Sunday, cooling will continue as winds shift
northwest between high over northern Plains and low pressure off New
England. H85 temps will drop steadily with readings centered around
-15c Sunday afternoon. Given the cold air aloft with increasing open
water off both lakes, expect widespread snow showers with lake
enhanced snow across higher terrain east of Lake Erie and for areas
southeast of Lake Ontario. Several inches of snow could result and
right now it is looking like we'll need a late season winter weather
advisory for parts of the area. Eventually, expect the lake enhanced
snow to transition to diurnally driven snow showers in the afternoon
as the core of the coldest air aloft and associated steeper lapse
rates approaches the Lower Lakes.

Moving into Sunday night the cold cyclonic northwesterly flow will
continue across the Lower Lakes with scattered snow showers across
the region. Blended pops, including the NBM, looked way too low in
this type of setup given plenty of moisture across the lower Great
Lakes and sufficient over-water instability so adjusted these upward
as as result. It should be one of the coldest nights of this period
with lows found in the single digits east of Lake Ontario to teens
elsewhere by daybreak Monday as the flow across the lakes results in
at least some (relative) moderation.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The axis of a negative tilt, longwave trough will lie across the
eastern Great Lakes this period, pushing an airmass that is more
typical for January than late March across our region. Model 850 hPa
temperatures at 12Z Monday are near or even colder than the coldest
850 hPa temperature sampled by KBUF balloon radiosonde for the
date...or even the late March 850 hPa average minimum temperature.
Thus will expect mid-January type weather with lake effect snow down
wind of the lakes on a northwest wind quickly becoming cellular and
diminishing with the higher March sun angle through the day.
Temperatures will be cold, with highs only in the 20s. Monday night
a clearing sky and for some a fresh snowpack will allow for a
cooling airmass to drop down into the single digits inland to teens
near the Lakes. A few spots across the Tug Hill may even drop below
zero Fahrenheit.

Tuesday will feature moderating temperatures with dry conditions and
the return of sunshine.

There remains model uncertainty to the timing of the next storm
system, its warm front passage Wednesday (narrow band of showers)
and then later cold front passage for Thursday. One reason for this
uncertainty is how fast an upper level closed over the desert
Southwest is captured by the northern jet stream. The ensembles show
quite the range in solutions for Thursday...but as we enter the
climatological season for closed lows, will side with the slower
solution of the cold front Thursday, which would bring temperatures
Thursday into the 50s. These could be even warmer with a slower cold
front passage.

.AVIATION /07Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
An area of light rain will quickly track across the North Country
overnight. This will bring lower CIGS at KART-KGTB but no
restrictions. VFR will continue at all area terminals.

A cold front will near the Lower Lakes this morning renewing chances
for showers today and MVFR CIGS expanding across area terminals.
CIGS and VSBYs will likely be lower across the S. Tier including
KJHW with steadier shower activity in the area throughout the day.
Rain showers will then mix with snow across the higher terrain areas
by late this evening.

Tonight...widespread MVFR CIGS anticipated with IFR across the S.
Tier (KJHW) and east of Lake Ontario (KART-KGTB).

Outlook...

Saturday...Areas of MVFR and local IFR in scattered rain and wet
snow showers.
Saturday night and Sunday...Areas of IFR in numerous snow showers
and areas of lake enhanced snow.
Monday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of snow showers.
Tuesday...VFR.
Tuesday night and Wednesday...MVFR/VFR with a chance of rain/snow
showers.

.MARINE...
A deep trough will then become established across the Great Lakes
and New England today through the weekend. Southwesterly winds will
increase ahead of this trough, bringing another round of Small Craft
Advisory conditions to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The southwest
winds will become westerly by Saturday, and then northwesterly
Saturday night and Sunday. Expect a long period of 20+ knot
sustained winds and Small Craft Advisory conditions beginning today
all the way through Monday night on both lakes.
