.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build south into the region and provide fair
weather today. Conditions will deteriorate late tonight and
remain unsettled with some rain for much of Wednesday into
Thursday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Mid and high level clouds will continue to thicken across western NY
this afternoon. A very dry airmass is in place with dewpoints
ranging from the mid-teens to the low 20s across the region.
Regional radar shows light radar returns to the southwest of New
York State but this is in the mid and high levels and will not reach
the ground.

A mid-level ridge will move overhead tonight keeping most of the
region dry into Wednesday morning. Temperatures will quickly fall
east of Lake Ontario with calm and clear skies and surface high
pressure across the region. Low temperatures will likely drop into
the teens to low 20s east of Lake Ontario to the low to mid 30s
across western NY. Temperatures will start to climb late Tuesday
night as surface winds start to increase out of the southeast. A
nearly stacked area of low pressure will track through the Mid-West
tonight and a low-level jet will approach from the Ohio Valley.
Forcing at the nose of the jet and increasing moisture will provide
support for light rain showers across the western Southern Tier
while fighting dry air. Colder temperatures may be present across
interior locations of the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier and
freezing rain is possible around daybreak Wednesday. Confidence is
low as precipitation may not reach this area and cloud cover may
keep temperatures from reaching 32F.

The elevated warm front will move across the region Wednesday and a
break in rain will occur through most of the morning across western
NY. Southeast winds will increase from south to north across the
region and with a 50kt jet across the region, downsloping winds are
possible along northwest facing slopes through the afternoon. Gusts
up to 50 mph are possible adjacent to the Chautauqua Ridge and
across southern Erie county Wednesday and as the jet moves northeast
across the North Country, gusts up to 40 mph are possible on the
northwest face of the Tug Hill into Wednesday evening. Another round
of rain will move into western NY Wednesday afternoon as an occluded
front approaches western NY. Instability increases late Wednesday
afternoon across northeast Ohio and into southwest New York into
Wednesday evening. It's a small chance with dewpoints in the 40s but
a few rumbles of thunder are possible west of the Genesee Valley
around sunset Wednesday evening. High temperatures will rise into
the mid to upper 40s and the low 50s across the western Southern
Tier including the Lake Erie shoreline.

Rain will move from west to east across the region Wednesday night.
Rainfall amounts of around a half inch are possible across the
Niagara Frontier and east of Lake Ontario Wednesday afternoon
Through Wednesday night. Amounts closer to a quarter inch are
possible from the western Southern Tier to the Finger Lakes.
Southeast winds will diminish through the night but will keep low
temperatures from falling with lows in the low to mid 30s east of
Lake Ontario to the low to mid 40s across western NY.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Behind a warm front Thursday a dry slot will push into WNY and
reduce much of the falling precipitation through the day. Better
convergence near the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes will highlight
the higher PoPs for Thursday. Air temperatures will quickly warm to
their forecast maximums Thursday before cold air advection through
the afternoon begins a cooling trend. These temperatures Thursday
could near 60F across WNY, and mid to upper 50s east of Lake Ontario.

Though cold air advection, a mild boundary layer should keep
precipitation that falls Thursday Night and Friday as plain rain,
and not until after an upper level low passes by will it become cold
enough aloft to support snow showers. These snow showers, Friday
Night across the higher terrain will become possible everywhere by
Saturday morning as temperatures at 850 hPa cool to -5 to -7C. As
these 850 hPa temperatures drop towards the negative teens Saturday
Night lake effect instability will begin to produce lake effect snow
downwind of the lakes on a northwest flow. With favorable moisture
within the snow DGZ, it is possible that several inches of snow will
accumulate SE of the Lakes.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
There is very high confidence that we will be experiencing below
normal temperatures throughout this period...especially Sunday and
Monday when the mercury will average a solid 10 deg f below typical
late March values.

The reason for the cold weather will be phased negatively tilted
longwave trough that will be start the period over James Bay and
eastern Canada. As we move out of the weekend...there will be a
deamplification of the longwave pattern so that the coldest air will
eventually be shunted to the east. The cold northwest flow with H85
temps in the minus teens c will support at least scattered lake snow
showers with likely pops being introduced southeast of Lake Ontario.

Pops will generally lower during the course of the period as the
cold air will lose its grip on the region and a subsidence cap will
gradually lower.

.AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
VFR conditions will persist through the TAF period (18z Wed) with
high pressure across the region. Mid to high level clouds will
expand eastward across western NY and north central NY through
tonight. Light rain showers are possible late tonight into Wednesday
morning across far western NY as a low level jet moves into western
NY. Southeast winds will increase Wednesday morning and may produce
gusty conditions across the the western Southern Tier by 18z
Wednesday.

Outlook...

Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday night...Rain showers. Slight
chance of thunderstorms across far western NY late Wednesday
afternoon into Wednesday evening. VFR deteriorating to IFR.
Thursday and Friday...MVFR/IFR in rain showers.
Saturday...MVFR conditions in scattered rain and snow showers.
Sunday...Scattered snow showers mainly southeast of the Lakes.
Localized IFR conditions possible.

.MARINE...
High pressure will provide generally quiet conditions on the waters
through today. Winds will shift southwest and freshen with the next
system Wednesday, making small craft conditions possible. Strong
easterlies may result in close gale conditions Wednesday into
Wednesday night across western Lake Ontario but looks like it
will stay high end small craft at this time.
