Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Our attention will now turn to a storm system organizing over the
Ohio Valley. This feature will track northeast across our area on
Monday with a half inch or more of widespread rain resulting in
noticeable rises on area tributaries. Colder air in the wake of the
system Monday night will allow the rain to end as a nuisance amount
of snow. High pressure will then supply the bulk of our forecast
area with fair dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Focus for later tonight and Monday will now shift to a low pressure
wave forecast to track across the Ohio Valley into New York State.
This will send a swath of rain into the region starting late tonight
and continuing through Monday. Ensemble plumes support most likely
rain totals ranging from around a half inch to an inch south of the
NYS Thruway to about a third of an inch closer to Lake Ontario. This
rainfall most likely can be handled by the area rivers and creeks,
however if more rain falls some hydrologic concerns with area creeks
and rivers could arise.

Colder air moving in from the north behind the wave will bring a mix
of wet snow by late in the day, especially for the North
Country.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
CAA on the backside of the departing system will transition rain
over to snow Monday evening and night. Nothing significant
accumulation wise...an inch or two with the help of a bit of lake
enhancement or upstream connections in spots off Lake Ontario. Might
even see a few isolated higher amounts in the 3 to 4 inch range but
the key will be the upstream connections. The big story though will
be the return of a much colder air mass to the area. In
fact...temperatures will be found in the low to mid 20s by sunrise
Tuesday.

Tuesday dry air filtering in across the Lower Lakes and falling
equilibrium levels ( < 5K feet) will put the breaks on any remaining
lake snows southeast of the lakes by midday. Still could see some
minor accumulations in the most persistent snows...an inch or so at
best.

Tuesday night sprawling sfc ridge to our southwest moves in
overhead. Any remaining lake snows will quickly end with dry
condition areawide. Cold night anticipated across the CWA...lows
mainly in the 20s with a few readings in the teens east of Lake
Ontario.

Wednesday weak warm air advection develops across the region which
looks like it will provide the area with a nice warmup. Temps
rebounding into the 40s areawide. It also look dry but guidance does
suggest that there will be a weak system passing by to our south.
Right now...the only thing it will do is too introduce some mid and
high level clouds across the region. The other thing to keep an eye
on is a weakening frontal boundary approaching the Lower Lakes from
the NW. This might play a role in some more active weather late in
the week.

Wednesday night not much will change with weak sfc ridge sandwiched
in over the region...expect dry and quiet weather. Lows in the 20s.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Thursday...sfc ridge will still be sandwiched in over the region
which will provide a dry mild day areawide. Highs climbing well into
the 40s to low 50s.

Thursday night...a robust shortwave diving south across the northern
Plains will help to carve out a deep upper level trough across the
central CONUS on Friday. This will allow for another warm up to
close out the work week owed to deep southwesterly flow setting up
downstream of the deepening trough to the west. As is typical when
we warm up this time of year, there will also be an uptick in
available moisture, which will allow for an increasing chance for
some rain showers on Friday to accompany the warm up. A strong cold
front will then be poised to cross the region bringing the
likelihood of precipitation sometime Friday night into the start of
next weekend. As to be expected there are timing differences this
far out in time as to when exactly the front plows across the
region. At this point, timing appears to be sometime between late
Friday and Saturday morning. Much colder air will pour across the
area in the wake of the FROPA with rain changing to snow, with some
lake effect snows expected to develop downwind of the Lakes.

Much colder air pouring in under NW flow will continue to support
lake effect snow showers southeast of the lakes into Sunday. Cold
day anticipated Sunday with highs only in the 20s to low 30s.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Areas of MVFR CIGS will continue through the rest of the night,
mainly along and north of the NY Thruway with some low level
moisture trapped beneath an inversion. Mainly VFR will prevail
across the Southern Tier.

Low pressure will move over the region today, with rain quickly
overspreading the area from southwest to northeast from 10-13Z
Monday. CIGS/VSBY will initially deteriorate to MVFR as the rain
develops, then drop further with widespread IFR CIGS and MVFR to IFR
VSBY in BR later this morning through the afternoon as low level
moisture pools near a sharp frontal zone draped across the area. The
rain will change to a brief period of wet snow late this afternoon
and this evening as colder air moves back into the region behind the
departing low moving into New England.

Following the brief period of snow, expect improvement to MVFR CIGS
and VFR VSBY in most locations from late evening through tonight.
Some limited lake effect snow will develop southeast of the lakes
with local IFR VSBY and MVFR CIGS continuing through the overnight.
The best lake effect snow will focus southeast of Lake Ontario to
the east of KROC. W/WNW winds will quickly increase this evening in
the wake of the system, with gusts of 25-35 knots areawide.

Outlook...
Tuesday...Local IFR in lake effect snow southeast of Lake Ontario
in the morning, otherwise mainly VFR.
Wednesday through Thursday...Mainly VFR.
Friday...Mainly VFR with a chance of showers.

Widespread small craft advisories will drop off from west to east
during the course of the overnight.

Winds will become light and variable for a short time late tonight
and early Monday before becoming easterly and freshening during the
course of the day. This will be the result of the next storm system
that is forecast to track across Pennsylvania and New York state.

Another round of small craft advisories looks likely Monday night
into Tuesday...especially on Lake Ontario.
