.SYNOPSIS...
A northwest flow of marginally cold air will produce limited lake
effect snow showers southeast of Lake Ontario through early
Wednesday morning with minor accumulations. Another weak low and
cold front will cross the area Wednesday night with widespread light
snow and again minor accumulations. This will be followed by limited
lake effect snow southeast of the lakes Thursday morning.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A clipper low over the Adirondacks late this evening will exit
across northern New England overnight. A brief shot of colder
air in its wake will be JUST cold enough for a minimal lake
response off Lake Ontario overnight and early Wednesday...with
lake snow accumulations of one to three inches for sites
southeast of the lake. Otherwise...the area outside of the lake
snows will experience just cloudy skies.

A brief window of dry weather through most of Wednesday will end by
late afternoon as another clipper approaches. A stronger digging mid
level trough will move from Quebec to northern New England, with an
associated strong cold front crossing the eastern Great Lakes
Wednesday night. Large scale forcing, moisture convergence, and flow
are all a little stronger with this second clipper, so expect snow
to be somewhat more widespread Wednesday night compared to today.
The boundary layer may still be just warm enough to allow for a
brief mix with rain at onset late Wednesday afternoon, otherwise
expect a mainly snow event. Following the passage of the cold front,
northwest flow lake effect will develop late Wednesday night as cold
air deepens. Most areas will see 1-2" of accumulation Wednesday
night, with 2-3" for higher terrain and also southeast of the lakes
as upslope and lake enhancement develop later Wednesday night.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Late Wednesday night and into early Thursday morning, cold
northwest flow develops across the region supporting lake effect
snow showers southeast of both Lakes Erie and Ontario, though
the response off of Lake Ontario will be more noteworthy. Lake
effect snow showers will be limited to Thursday morning, as a
combination of high pressure and its associated dry air,
lowering inversion heights, and diurnal mixing will diminish
lake snow activity throughout the rest of the day Thursday. This
all being said, snow accumulations will be limited Thursday
morning to just a half an inch.

Surface high pressure will continue to slide southeast across the
Great Lakes and into the Atlantic Ocean Thursday night through
Friday night. Overall this will support a period of chilly dry
weather. Thursday night especially will be on the colder side as
clear skies will promote plenty of radiational cooling and therefore
support the mercury to drop. Lows Thursday night will cool off into
the low teens along the immediate lakeshores to single digits across
the higher terrain of WNY and a few degrees below zero east of Lake
Ontario.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Setting up the picture aloft heading into the long term, a trough
will span across the western half of the CONUS, while a ridge lies
across much of the eastern half. Within the trough's base, two
shortwaves will lie and be responsible for the weather for the
weekend and early half of next week. The first wave, will traverse
northeast across the Central Plains and into the Upper Great Lakes
and eventually the James Bay this weekend. Ahead of said trough, a
surface low will develop over eastern Colorado. As both of these
features track northeast, the surface low will stay out ahead of the
trough until it becomes vertically stacked over the Upper Great
Lakes Sunday. As the surface low pushes across the Upper Great
Lakes, the associated warm front will push northeast across the
Great Lakes, spreading over the region Saturday. Initially
precipitation will start out as snow, before a nose of warm air in
the low levels spreads nudges northward across the region acting to
change over snow to rain. Then, as the low becomes vertically
stacked and wrapped in around itself, its cold/occluded front will
push across the region and bring another round of rain showers
across the region. Otherwise, of note this weekend is the surge in
temperatures, with highs Sunday warming up into the upper 40s (east
of Lake Ontario) to a range of 50s across the rest of WNY.

The second aforementioned shortwave trough will follow a similar
such track late this weekend/early next week. However, the
difference here with this new wave is it will be responsible to
break up the longwave pattern by pushing the overall trough
eastward. Therefore, another round of showers is expected to spread
across the region late Sunday night/Monday. Additionally, cold air
will spread across the region Monday night behind the frontal
passage and cause rain to switch back over to snow.

Then with the pattern shift aloft, high pressure will then spread
across the region Tuesday, though with cold air now aloft lake
effect showers may develop east of the lakes.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Limited lake effect snow showers will develop southeast of Lake
Ontario and Lake Erie through early Wednesday morning with local
MVFR/IFR VSBY. Otherwise areas of MVFR CIGS will continue overnight
through Wednesday morning. The lake effect will end by late morning
Wednesday, and most of the MVFR CIGS will improve to VFR. The next
clipper and cold front will approach late in the day, with snow or a
rain/snow mix developing toward evening. CIGS/VSBY will deteriorate
after 21Z Wednesday.

Outlook...
Wednesday night...Areas of IFR in snow.
Thursday...Local MVFR/IFR in lake effect snow showers southeast of
the lakes in the morning, improving to mainly VFR in the afternoon.
Friday...Mainly VFR.
Saturday...VFR/MVFR with snow/rain showers developing.
Sunday...MVFR wind rain showers, windy.

Moderate to occasionally fresh westerlies will be found throughout
the region overnight...as a clipper low will exit across northern New
England.

Another clipper cold front will cross the region on Wednesday night,
with post-frontal northwest winds producing another round of Small
Craft Advisory conditions late Wednesday night through Thursday
morning.
