.SYNOPSIS...
A strong cold front will plow through our forecast area late this
afternoon and evening. Notably colder air behind the front will
awaken the lake effect snow machines known as Lakes Erie and
Ontario...supporting significant lake snows tonight into Thursday
night in the Buffalo metro area and across parts of the North
Country. Temperatures will then continue their downward trend
through Friday night with lake snows moving to areas southeast of
both lakes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...Significant Lake Snows Northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario...

At current, 992mb low is over northern lower Michigan with cold
front extending southward across western Lake Erie then bisecting
Ohio from west to east. Cold front will reach far western NY after 3
PM. A strong southerly flow with gusts to 35-40 mph at times ahead
of the front will result in temps to climbing into the 40s despite
cloudy skies. Showers already developing ahead of the front over
western NY. Once the cold front arrives expect brief mix of rain and
snow, quickly changing to snow after the front passes.

The strong cold front will continue to plow across the remainder of
western and north central New York early this evening. In its wake,
H85 temps will plummet to roughly -15c through the night. This will
establish sufficient over-water instability over the 37-40F (+3 to
+4c) lakes and set the stage for accumulating snows in both the
Buffalo and Watertown metro areas. Due to stronger winds tonight and
strongest lift occurring just below the DGZ, though QPF was
increased resulting snow amounts stayed pretty similar to previous
forecast. No major changes to headlines or timing.

Off Lk Erie, a fairly well aligned 240-250 flow (minimal shear
in lake convective layer) becomes established tonight. Inversion
heights top out 6-8kft and models have been very consistent
with this. Result will be single plume of moderate to
occasionally heavy lake snow that will extend across the Buffalo
metro area. Snowfall rates will range from a half to as much as
1.5 inches an hour (though 2+ inch per hour rates seem like a
lower probability for this event), and this should promote
snowfall amounts by daybreak Thu up to 8 inches from the Buffalo
Metro area and its immediate southern suburbs to Darien with
lesser amounts extending northeast to western Monroe county.
While not the optimal conditions for electrification with the
band due to relatively low inversion heights and -10c isotherm
hgt, continue to mention slight chance of lightning within 20
miles of the lake (source of instability). Blowing snow will be
an issue at times in open areas with wind gusts to 40 mph this
evening decreasing to 30 mph or so by daybreak Thursday.

The plume of snow should generally remain locked in place through
Thu, although it could waver a bit from time to time. The inversion
will lower to around 5kft as has been shown for many days in
guidance as axis of upper trough shifts east of Lake Erie. Daytime
accumulations within the heart of the band are forecast to average
3-6".

Very similar parameters will be found east of Lake Ontario, but as
is usually the case, the event will unfold a few hours later.

Off Lk Ontario, the cold front will charge across early this
evening. As the cold air in its wake deepens, winds initially shift
260-270 before changing to a more steady 240 to 250 flow overnight.
Initial snow showers this evening could impact the central and
northern Tug Hill, but the primary lake response late this evening
and overnight will impact sites from Watertown to the Thousand
Islands region. Snowfall rates under an inch an hour are expected
most of the overnight, then toward daybreak, a single band of
moderate to heavy snow will increase across the Watertown area, or
perhaps just to the south. Overnight snowfall amounts are forecast
top out around 3-5" depending on persistence of the bands and how
quickly they can form. Winds will be gusting to 35 mph or so,
strongest near the lakeshore, so blowing snow could be an issue
especially in open areas.

On Thursday, a 240 to 250 flow will keep the heaviest lake snow
between Watertown and the northern slopes of the Tug Hill. Guidance
is suggesting upstream connections become established to Lake Huron
and Georgian Bay so this should help to boost snowfall rates to an
inch or more an hour. Expect additional 5-7" of snow where bands are
most persistent on Thursday. Have included the slight chc mention
for thunder and lightning in the heart of the band later tonight and
Thursday morning. Conditions for electrification are slightly more
favorable than those found within the Lake Erie activity.

Areas just outside of the main lake plumes where accumulating snows
could still impact travel, including northwestern Wyoming county and
the northern portions of Lewis county where winter weather
advisories will now be in place. Its not out of the question that if
both bands settle just a little further south than forecast that
these advisories would have to be upgraded to warnings.

An upper level trough will move through Thursday night and Friday,
with a surface low passing by to our south. Synoptic snows from this
system should largely stay southeast and south of our area, however
the trough will temporarily bring deeper synoptic moisture which
will energize lake effect snow and allow snow showers to reach
further inland. Southwesterly flow ahead of the trough will direct
lake snows northeast of the lakes Thursday evening, then winds will
shift to the northwest behind the trough late Thursday night. This
wind shift will cause bands to shift southeast of Lake Ontario and
east of Lake Erie more of which is discussed below.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Friday, another lake effect snow event will unfold across our
region. Aloft, a strong upper level shortwave will be traveling
across our region Friday morning. At the surface a rapidly deepening
surface low will be tracking up the Atlantic coastline. While snow
from this system will remain just to our east, this low will
influence surface wind direction across our region, while also
increasing the overall synoptic moisture especially near Lake
Ontario.

Lake effect snow parameters become favorable for snow growth, with
equilibrium levels rising towards 8-9K feet, with ample moisture
located through the snow DGZ. The snow off Lake Erie may be more
multi banded and focused upon the Chautauqua Ridge, though a skinny
band of snow from an upstream connection to Lake Huron is possible
towards western Chautauqua County. The snowband off Lake Ontario
will likely be singular with an upstream connection possible to
Georgian Bay. This singular band will have the potential to yield
snowfall rates of at least an inch per hour off Lake Ontario.

A look at the upper air pattern, the position and height of a trough
at both 850 hPa and 500 hPa lies very close to events that have
brought warning criteria snow in the past southeast of Lake Ontario.
One of the drawbacks right now is wind direction. The band of snow
off Lake Ontario, starting near the southern Tug Hill early Friday
morning will quickly drop southward towards the southern Lake
Ontario shoreline once the upper level trough passes across the
region. However the deepening surface low now off the New England
coastline may draw this band of snow eastward some. If the band of
snow does oscillate, snowfall amounts will be much lower than if it
could lock on to one location. Off both lakes advisory level snows
are likely, with higher and more widespread snow totals off Lake
Ontario. For now will continue to mention this event in the HWO.

A stout surface ridge will build towards Lake Erie Friday Night, and
across Lake Ontario early Saturday morning, ending the lake snows
from west to east. The weakening of winds Friday Night will also
contract the snow bands closer to the shoreline.

Saturday will start off mainly dry, but cold across the region.
Single digit temperatures will be common across WNY, and well below
zero...possibly double digits below zero across the North Country.
The one spot that will remain above 10F will be along the southern
Lake Ontario shoreline and points southeastward where lingering lake
clouds will reside.

Though a cold start, Saturday will warm to around the freezing mark
through the day with ample sunshine through a good portion of the
day. Through the afternoon hours high clouds will begin to increase
ahead of the next storm system. This storm system deepened by a
trough within the northern branch of the jet stream will drive a
cold front all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico...with the cold
front passing across our region Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of this cold front a tight pressure gradient will bring gusty
southerly winds...that will limit the cooling Saturday Night, and
also produce a brief period of mild temperatures Sunday. South to
southwest wind gusts Sunday could near 35 mph northeast of Lake
Erie...and around 30 mph northeast of Lake Ontario.

This warming, centered between 850 and 800 hPa layers will also
bring rain as the main p-type later Saturday Night and Sunday across
the Lake Plain, while higher elevations could see a brief period of
snow, sleet and freezing rain at onset where surface and near
surface temperatures linger below freezing before a change over to
plain rain Sunday. Aiding in synoptic lift will be the right
entrance region of a strengthening 140 knot 300 hPa jet. The axis of
deeper moisture Sunday and Sunday evening will be to our south and
east, and this will hold overall precipitation totals (rain and
melted snow) to just a tenth or two. Snow amounts will be minor
across southern WNY, but east of Lake Ontario where the milder
airmass will be delayed, several inches of snow will be possible
across the North Country.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Behind the cold front Sunday, a much, much colder airmass will drop
across our region for the beginning of next week. Temperatures at
850 hPa will likely drop towards -20C, and well into the -20s across
the North Country. Values of this magnitude are several degrees
lower than the 10% low end moving average for soundings taken at
Buffalo. Will side towards the colder side of model guidance for
temperatures, especially Monday through Tuesday Night behind an
arctic front.

Accumulating lake effect snow will occur as the cold air crosses the
lakes Monday and Tuesday with the flow generally WNW.

The arctic plunge will be short-lived as a moderating pattern emerges
Wednesday as the cold surface high slips towards the southeast. It's
possible on a southwest flow that another plume of lake effect snow
develops to the northeast of the Lakes, but confidence at this
point is low.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A strong cold front will cross far western New York late this
afternoon and will make its way across the North Country by mid
evening. Cigs will lower to MVFR levels later this afternoon ahead
of the front. The front will produce a brief period of rain/snow
before quickly changing to snow after the front passes.

As the cold air deepens in the wake of the front this evening...
lake snows will develop northeast of both lakes. This will lead to
high impact weather for KBUF and KART with moderate to heavy snow
and blowing snow with LIFR to VLIFR conditions expected. Conditions
may drop below airfield minimums at times at KBUF and KART. The
remainder of the region later tonight will experience mainly MVFR
cigs.

Outlook...

Friday...Areas of IFR with light snow, and embedded areas of heavier
lake effect snow.
Saturday...local IFR within lingering lake effect south of Lake
Ontario early...otherwise VFR.
Sunday...Rain and snow showers likely. Mainly VFR/MVFR with localized IFR.
Monday...Local IFR within lake effect southeast of the lakes...otherwise
VFR.

.MARINE...
...Gale Warnings in Effect Throughout the Lower Great Lakes...

Low pressure tracking from the Upper Great Lakes to southern Quebec
will push a strong cold front across the Lower Great Lakes into this
evening. Southerly winds have freshened ahead of the front, then
becoming southwest gales late this afternoon through tonight.

A weakening sfc pressure gradient behind the exiting storm on
Thursday will allow winds to gradually subside. Small craft
advisories will be needed though for all of the nearshore waters in
the wake of the expiring gale warnings.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Deep low pressure over the Upper Great Lakes will cross Ontario and
Quebec tonight. This scenario will generate gale force winds
throughout the Lower Great Lakes with waves building high enough to
possibly cause some lake shore flooding.

On Lake Erie...southwest winds to 40 knots will likely push the
lake level at Buffalo to nearly 7 feet above low water datum.
This is just below flood stage. This could result in some minor
flooding along the Lake Erie shore, including locations such as
Dunkirk Harbor, Canalside in downtown Buffalo, Route 5 and
Hoover Beach in Hamburg, Grand Island, and Cayuga Island in
Niagara Falls.

The strong southwest to west winds on Lake Ontario will generate
very high wave action on the east end of the lake, including
bays, inlets, and other flood prone areas. Some possible
locations include Sandy Pond, Chaumont Bay, and Black River Bay.
Flooding will also be possible on some of the islands in the
Thousand Islands region.
