.SYNOPSIS...
A series of weak clipper systems will produce occasional rain and
wet snow showers for most of the region through Friday night, with
minor accumulations at times mainly across higher terrain. The best
accumulations will be found across the Tug Hill Plateau with some
lake enhancement. Much colder air will move into the region Saturday
afternoon through early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Radar trends show snow is tapering off east of Lake Ontario.
Additional accumulation of less than an inch across northern
Jefferson and Lewis counties through 4 a.m. Elsewhere just a few
flurries.

After a bit of a break early in the day Friday, precipitation
chances ramp back up around midday and especially during the
afternoon as a clipper low approaches and sends a warm front through
the region. Ascent will increase by midday or early afternoon,
supporting increasing chances of precipitation across Western NY
first, then spreading eastward through the afternoon and evening.
Temperatures will turn quite mild ahead of the clipper, with highs
in the 40s areawide and possibly around 50 near Dansville. This will
support mainly rain through early evening for most areas, with any
wet snow limited to the highest terrain east of Lake Ontario.

Strong 50-60 knot low level jet will cross the region Friday,
but low level lapse rates will be very poor in the warm
advection regime. Expect gusts of 30-40 mph especially across
Western NY, and up to 45 mph in downslope flow off the
Chautauqua Ridge near the Lake Erie shore southwest of Buffalo.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Several shortwaves will again dig an upper level trough over the
Great Lakes region this period, with arctic air pouring over the
Eastern Great Lakes through this period's closure.

Friday Night a cold front will complete its trek across our region,
producing areas of precipitation, especially across upslope areas
east of the Lakes. Deep moisture and falling heights aloft will
continue precipitation through the night, becoming focused late upon
the higher terrain. Thermal profiles show enough of an above
freezing layer near the surface that initially rain will be the
predominate p-type. As cold air advection continues through the
night this rain will change over to snow for most areas by the
night's end. A wet snow, will primarily accumulate across higher
terrain where an inch or so is possible east of Lake Erie...with
several inches of snow possible east of Lake Ontario.

Surface low pressure advancing across Quebec will then drag a
secondary front (arctic front) to near the Saint Lawrence Valley and
Lakes Erie/Ontario by 12Z Saturday.

Snow upon this front, enhanced by the lakes will only amount to an
inch or two...this within a dry airmass. Temperatures will fall
through the day, with early highs around the freezing mark falling
to the teens by late afternoon. Brisk northerly winds could yield
some blowing snow through the day and into the evening hours. Cold
temperatures Saturday Night behind the arctic front with single
digits across WNY, and subzero readings again east of Lake Ontario.

These temperatures will budge slightly Sunday when during the
daylight hours air temperatures only recover into the lower teens
across WNY, and single digits east of Lake Ontario...this as the
core of a -20 to -22C 850 hPa airmass passes overhead.

Within this cold air, lake effect snow remains possible especially
south of the still open lake waters of Lake Ontario. A weak wave
Sunday afternoon and overnight may enhance the snow a little by
supplying additional moisture, but within this dry arctic airmass
overall snow accumulations will be fluffy and light.

Sunday Night will be the coldest time period with temperatures
bottoming out in the low single digits, to inland below zero across
WNY, and towards the negative teens east of Lake Ontario. In areas
that can break free of lake clouds these temperature values could go
even colder.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Deep trough and arctic airmass will stay firmly entrenched across
the eastern Great lakes with 850 hPA of -21C/-24C on Monday. There
will also be some snow showers to contend with through Monday night.

Expansive sfc ridge then moves over the region Tuesday with
progressively drier weather areawide. Temperatures will also begin
to moderate a bit with highs bumping up into the 20s.

Tuesday night...sfc ridge drifts off to our east with southerly flow
developing on the western peripheral of the ridge. This will further
expedite a warming trend that is advertised to begin Wednesday and
continue into the later half of the week. The only question is how
warm and wet will it be, which is yet to be determined. Still lots
of time and plenty of uncertainty with this update. The 10/12Z GFS
is not only warm (850 hPa of +8C/+9C)...its wet (goodbye snowpack)
which could potentially lead to hydro issues (ice jams).
Furthermore...a sub 980 mb sfc low tracks by to our west with a
potent 925 hPa LLJ in the wake of the cold front. This would spell a
possible wind event. Good thing...not all guidance supports the GFS
solution but confidence is growing to at least bump temperatures up
a bit with this update on Wednesday and Thursday.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Some lingering snow showers east of Lake Ontario will move out
of the area as winds shift to the south and push these into
Canada. Otherwise, expect MVFR cigs to improve to VFR with the
wind shift at well.

LLJ moves across the region Friday, with gusty winds. LLWS at
KJHW where winds aloft will not mix to the surface well.
Otherwise, expect dry weather and VFR flight conditions through
early afternoon.

Mainly rain showers will move in as low pressure and an
associated frontal boundary approach late in the day Friday.
Snow may mix in across higher terrain, with rain eventually
changing to snow at all locations late Friday night. Cigs will
lower to MVFR and eventually IFR as low level moisture increases.

Outlook...

Saturday...VFR/MVFR in scattered light snow showers, with local IFR
east of the lakes in lake effect snow showers.
Sunday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of snow showers, especially
southeast of the lakes.
Monday...VFR/MVFR in scattered lake effect snow showers.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Scattered morning lake effect snow showers.

.MARINE...
Southwest winds will continue to diminish overnight, with waves on
Lake Ontario gradually subsiding. There will then be a brief lull in
winds overnight through early Friday morning.

Another clipper low will move from the Upper Great Lakes Friday to
the Gulf of Saint Lawrence Saturday, bringing another round of Small
Craft Advisory conditions to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
