.SYNOPSIS...
A winter storm system will quickly exit the region this afternoon.
Behind this system, lake effect snow will develop southeast of the
lakes tonight, and shift to east of the lakes Saturday. However,
only light accumulations are expected. An arctic front may bring
brief snow squalls to the region Sunday. Dry but cool weather
returns Monday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Upper level shortwave trough is overhead while its associated
surface low moves into Central NY. Although there are still areas
of snowfall, the most impactful snow has now moved into Eastern Lake
Ontario where a Winter Storm warning remains in effect, while
advisories have been cleared out elsewhere.
As colder air moves in this afternoon, lake snows will pick up into
evening with the most concentrated snow southeast of Lake Ontario
between Orleans and Oswego counties. An additional 1-3 inches are
possible tonight. Dry air will lowering inversion heights will limit
lake snows east of Lake Erie with only an inch or so possible. Lake
snows will diminish east of Lake Erie by Saturday morning. Lake
snows southeast of Lake Ontario will retreat towards the Lake.
Saturday...Flow aloft backs with time. Thus any lake bands SE of
Lake Ontario should be directed E, then NE with time. Otherwise,
Saturday should be relatively uneventful in terms of sensible
weather as a subtle shortwave ridge moves across, then east of the
region.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A large trough will remain across our region to start this period.
Within this cold air bands of lake effect snow will be found,
greatest off Lake Ontario with deeper moisture producing several
inches of lake snows. Even though Lake Erie is still mainly ice
covered there are enough open spaces that we should see a weak band
of snow across Erie County.
An arctic front will drop southward across our region Sunday
afternoon and night. Synoptic moisture ahead of the front will
enhance the lake snows through the day while also bringing
widespread modest snow on a gusty west and then northwest wind.
Accumulations will be hard to measure as gusts Sunday could reach 40
mph near the shoreline of Lake Ontario and 25 to 35 elsewhere. East
of Lake Ontario, where the arctic front will be sharper snow squalls
are possible along the front Sunday afternoon and evening.
Northwest winds will drive lake snows to the southeast and south of
the Lakes Sunday Night. These winds will also produce wind chill
values below zero across WNY, and into the negative teens east of
Lake Ontario.
High pressure advancing towards our region from the west will weaken
these snows through the night as dry air is entrained into the bands
and warming aloft commences. A few flurries or light snow showers
will be lingering early Monday morning across the Genesee Valley and
Finger Lakes region. This high will bring a cold day Monday, and
continued warming aloft and less wind will make Monday Night not as
cold.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Upper level pattern becomes more zonal moving into Tuesday. A
progressive shortwave will swing a weak cold front through the
region Tuesday evening, bringing a quick shot of more widespread
precip to the area. Still some discrepancies among the 12z
guidance packages on the exact track and strength of the
associated surface low, which will pass in close proximity to
the CWA. This will ultimately have an impact on precip types and
amounts, though temps dropping Tuesday night should allow any
leftover precip to changeover to all snow before the system
departs to the west.
Behind the clipper system, colder air and lingering synoptic
moisture may support some lake effect showers east/southeast of the
lakes late Tuesday night and Wednesday. The region will be situated
under a broad longwave trough, which will help keep cloudy skies
around, with a few scattered flurries not out of the question.
Another clipper system may sweep across the area Wednesday night and
bring another brief round of snow to the area, before weak high
pressure brings drier weather for Thursday and Friday.

.AVIATION /19Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
IFR conditions continue as a surface low moves from the Central NY
eastern New England today. Expect continued improvement, at least
in visibilities over WNY during the afternoon, although there may be
some lake effect development SE of the lakes by late in the day. As
the low moves east, winds will continue to shift to the NW this
afternoon.
Lake effect will keep snow showers close to KROC into the evening
while snow showers taper off elsewhere. Cigs will likely stay MVFR
until late this evening. Cigs will improve to VFR outside of lake
snows late tonight.
Outlook...
Saturday...Mainly VFR with localized IFR in lake effect snow showers
east of the lakes.
Sunday...MVFR/IFR flight conditions likely...within lake effect
snow to the northeast and east of the Lakes and then region
wide with a passing cold front.
Monday...A few lake effect snow showers southeast of Lake
Ontario early, otherwise mainly VFR. Tuesday...Mainly VFR.
Wednesday...A chance of snow showers and MVFR conditions.

A surface low will track into eastern NY this evening with NW flow
behind a cold front. Surface high pressure will build towards the
Lakes tonight and this will allow for winds and waves to weaken.
