.SYNOPSIS...
While the widespread snow over the region this morning will
generally taper off to scattered snow showers by early afternoon...
strong northwest winds will usher in a very cold airmass that will
aim steadier lake snows over parts of the region through tonight.
Wintry conditions will persist through Sunday...then a significant
warming trend can be expected for the new work week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The widespread snow across the region early this morning will taper
off from west to east...as the deepest moisture and significant lift
from a combination of strong frontogenetic forcing and coupled UL
jet lift move away to the east. Unfortunately...this will only bring
an end to the synoptic based snow.

Notably colder air in the wake of strong east coast cyclogenesis will
result in H85 temps tumbling into the minus teens for the afternoon.
This will not only translate into slowly falling daytime
temperatures but will also support a lake response with increasing
coverage of lake induced snow showers. If this were early in the
season with a low sun angle and less ice coverage on the lakes...we
could be talking about lake snow warnings. The more cellular nature
of the lake snows this afternoon though will somewhat limit new snow
accumulations. This activity could achieve better organization
tonight though with snowfall rates in some bands exceeding an inch
an hour. The bands should be somewhat transient though...but have
extended the winter weather advisories in any case to cover the
nighttime snow accums and gusty winds (ie blowing drifting snow).

Daytime snowfall will range from an inch or two near the lakes to 2
to 4 inches across the higher terrain and east of Lake Ontario.
Winds gusting to 45 mph will blow some of this snow around...so
untreated roads will likely remain snow covered and slick. Wind
chill values this afternoon will also average in the single digits.

The lake snows on a strong northwest flow during the first half of
tonight will weaken and become less widespread as sfc based ridging
will lower the cap and a backing steering flow will push bands to
the north. The bulk of the lake snow accums tonight will come before
06z.

On Sunday...residual lake snows east of Lake Ontario will continue
to weaken while they will push north across Jefferson county.
Meanwhile...clouds will increase and thicken from the west. While a
ridge will pass through the region during the first half of the
day...warm advection in its wake will combine with lift from an
approaching mid level shortwave to support more snow showers for the
afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Subsidence will increase behind the shortwave trough Sunday night
and mostly dry conditions are expected overnight. Warm air
advection continues into Monday with temperatures only falling a
few degrees Sunday night. With an upper level ridge in place,
dry conditions expected Monday with temperatures rising into the
40s.

An area of low pressure will track along an approaching cold front
across the central Great Lakes late Monday into Monday night. Large
scale ascent and moisture ahead of an approaching trough will follow
the cold front into western and north central NY late Monday night
into Tuesday morning. Rain and snow showers are likely late Monday
night into Tuesday morning. Low temperatures will fall into the low
to mid 30s Monday night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A warming trend with a relatively benign weather pattern expected
through the end of the week.

Tuesday...a weak cold front crosses the Lower Lakes with the
potential for a light mix of rain and snow. Highs mainly in the 40s.

Tuesday night... behind the cold front sfc high pressure works
quickly east across the region. Coldest night of this period with
lows in the 20s and 30s.

Wednesday through Friday...sfc ridge moves east across the region
with developing southwest flow in its wake initiating the warming
trend mentioned above. Highs climbing into the 40s and 50s Wednesday
then solid 50s and 60s on Thursday. Mild again on Friday with likely
dry weather likely to be maintain ahead of an approaching frontal
boundary and southern stream system.

.AVIATION /09Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Widespread IFR vsbys in snow will gradually improve during the
course of the morning...as the steadier snows will gradually give
way to more localized lake snow showers. The midday and afternoon
will thus feature cigs of 2500-3500ft with localized vsbys of 2-4SM.

Most sites will experience MVFR conditions in lake snows showers
through the first half of tonight...with the exception of KART and
KGTB where VFR weather is expected. Later tonight...VFR conditions
will return to most of the TAF sites.

Outlook...

Sunday...Lake effect snow and local IFR east of Lake Ontario in the
morning, otherwise mainly VFR. Breezy.
Monday...Mainly VFR.
Tuesday...Mainly VFR with a chance of rain and snow showers.
Wednesday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Gale warnings have been issued for the vast majority of Lake Ontario
as a strong sfc pressure will develop over the region. This will
come as a result of strong cyclogenesis off the East coast and the
approach of expansive high pressure over the Lower Mississippi
valley. Small craft advisories will be found elsewhere.

The headlines will remain in place through at least the first half
of tonight...then the nose of the aforementioned sfc high will
extend across the Lower Great Lakes to start to weaken winds.

Moderate to fresh breezes will be found across the region on Sunday
with a further lowering of winds and waves Sunday night and Monday.
