.SYNOPSIS...
It will be noticeably milder today...as high temperatures will be a
solid 15 to 20 degrees higher than those from Monday. The warm up
will come courtesy of high pressure that will move away to our east
and act as a heat pump by circulating milder into the region from
the Ohio Valley. The warming trend will continue on Wednesday ahead
of a cold front...then the nicer weather will come to a crashing end
as very cold air will pour across the region Thursday and Friday.
The change back to colder weather will be highlighted by heavy lake
snows northeast of both lakes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Lake effect clouds have been persistent across a portion of
western NY and the northern Tug Hill region this morning. Areas
between and especially across the western southern Tier are
getting some sunshine this morning. Flurries will continue north
of Watertown this morning. Southwest flow and a broad
shortwave ridge will support clearing this afternoon. Max temps
will end up a solid 15 to 20 degrees higher than yesterday with
afternoon readings generally in the low to mid 30s. Sites in the
Genesee valley could peak at 40.

Tonight...fair weather will be accompanied by a deep southerly flow
between high pressure off the coast and a deepening cyclone over the
Upper Mississippi valley/Great lakes that will provide us with a
relatively mild night. Temperatures will stubbornly inch their way
below freezing over the western counties...while the mercury will
bottom out in the mid 20s across the North country. The only thing
of note tonight will be a 50 kt low level jet. Given that the flow
aloft will be southerly though rather than from the southeast
(perpendicular to Chautauqua ridge)...am not anticipating a
downslope wind event for the lake plain corridor in Chautauqua
county. Winds could still gust to 35 mph in this area though.

It will be breezy and relatively mild across the region on
Wednesday...as a deep area of low pressure will track from the SOO
and Lake Huron into Canada. While the vast majority of the day will
be rain free...there will be an increasing chance for mixed rain and
snow showers over the western counties as the afternoon progresses.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
...Significant Lake Snows Northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario...

A strong cold front will plow across western and north central New
York late Wednesday afternoon and evening. In its wake...H85 temps
will plummet to between -12 and -14c. This will ignite lake induced
instability over the 40 deg (+4c) lakes and wake up the slumbering
lake effect machine and set the stage for accumulating snows in both
the Buffalo and Watertown metro areas.

Off Lk Erie...a well aligned 240 flow will become established during
the first half of Wednesday night. While the cap will only be 7-8kft
of the deck...sufficient synoptic moisture and a 3-5kft thick DGZ
should be able to support a single plume of moderate to occasionally
heavy lake snow that will extend across the Buffalo metro area.
Snowfall rates will range from a half to 1.5 inches an hour...and
this should promote overnight snowfall amounts up to 9 inches from
the Buf metro area to near Corfu with lesser amounts extending
northeast to western Monroe county. Snow to water ratios will be on
the high side...as they often are in les events...with ratios of 15
to 20:1 anticipated. This will promote greater accumulations. Have
added the chance for lightning for sites within a 20 miles or so
from the lake (source of instability)...as -10c isotherm will be
some 3-4kft off the sfc. Blowing snow may be an issue with wind
gusts to 30 mph or so.

The plume of snow should generally remain locked in place through
the day Thursday...as guidance is suggesting that the 240 flow will
persist. The cap will come down a bit though...so this should lessen
snowfall rates to an inch or less. Daytime snow accums for Buf and
its immediate srn suburbs to about Darien to Batavia should average
5 to 8 inches. Again...snow to water ratios will be in the vcnty of
15/20:1.

Very similar parameters will be found east of Lake Ontario...but as
is usually the case...the event will unfold a few hours later.

Off Lk Ontario...the cold front is not forecast to charge through
until the early evening hours. As the cold air in its wake
deepens...a 230 to 240 flow will direct the initial lake response to
sites between Watertown and the Thousand Islands region. The band
will be rather disorganized at this point with rates under an inch
an hour...but during the course of the overnight...a well aligned
240 to 25 flow will aim the core of a single band of moderately
heavy snow to the Watertown area...or points just south. Without a
well defined upstream connection and with a cap of 7-8kft...snowfall
rates will not be overly impressive...just averaging a half to one
inch per hour. Overnight snowfall amounts are forecast top out
around 6-7". As with the Lk Erie lake snow...winds will be gusting
to 30 mph or so...esp near the lake...so blowing snow could be an
issue.

On Thursday...a 240 to 250 flow will keep the heaviest lake snow
between Watertown and the northern slopes of the Tug Hill. Guidance
is suggesting that an upstream connection becomes established to
Lake Huron and Georgian Bay...so this should help to boost snowfall
rates to an inch or more an hour. The snow to water ratios will be
in the teens to near 20:1...so a lighter fluffier snow will be
easier to accumulate and blow around.

Areas just outside of the main lake bands where accumulating snows
could still impact travel...including western Monroe county and
northern Oswego county...could eventually find themselves in Winter
Weather Advisories.

It will get a little more complicated across our region Thursday
night...as a southern stream storm system will track from the
Carolinas to the Mid Atlantic coast. The northern portion of the
associated pcpn shield will likely extend across at least parts of
our forecast area...while a west to southwest flow will maintain
lake snows. Likely pops will be in place for most of the region with
cat pops for the aforementioned lake snow areas.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Negatively tilted upper level trough axis will be placed across the
lower Great Lakes Friday morning, which will support the deepening
of a Miller Type A nor'easter off the coast of NYC. The trough axis
will continue to push east throughout the day Friday and allow for
upper level ridging to fill into its place. This will initially
support general northwest flow across the region, and considering
the residual moisture from the nor'easter, along with the colder
temperatures (around -15C at 850mb), lake effect snow will likely
continue and support some accumulations east/southeast of both lakes
Friday.

Ridging will build across the central and lower Great Lakes Friday
night and Saturday. Associated dry air will filter in across the
region and act to smother out any remaining lake effect showers
Saturday morning. Then, warm air will begin to advect into the
region Saturday afternoon which will also aid in the termination of
lake effect showers.

Then, the next trough across the Central Plains Saturday, will
support a surface low over northern Ontario, Canada where it will
then travel east-northeastward across northern Ontario and Quebec
Saturday night through Sunday. Its attendant cold front will drape
across the central Plains Saturday, and then travel eastward due to
the motion of the surface low. Initially, warm air advection ahead
of the front will bring chances for some rain/mixed precipitation
Sunday, before much colder air filters in behind the front
transitioning precipitation to snow.

A combination of much colder air (temperatures of negative
teens/twenties) will support a lake response east of both lakes
Monday.

.AVIATION /15Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Lake effect clouds are found northeast of both lakes and will result
in MVFR cigs for KBUF, KIAG and KART this morning. The
remainder of the region should be VFR through 14z.

While there will be some leftover lake induced strato-cu northeast
of the lakes during the initial daylight hours...today will feature
VFR weather.

The VFR conditions will then persist through tonight.

Outlook...
Wednesday...Mainly VFR, becoming windy.
Wednesday night through Friday...mainly VFR/MVFR, except for
local IFR/LIFT within lake effect snows ENE of the lakes.
Saturday...IFR within lingering lake effect snows ESE of the
lakes. Mainly MVFR elsewhere.

.MARINE...
Gusty southerly winds through midday have prompted a short lived
small craft advisory for Lake Erie and the BUF Harbor. Otherwise...
moderate to occasionally fresh southwesterlies will be found
throughout much of the Lower Great Lakes.

While winds may freshen a bit tonight...the southerly fetch will
keep the highest wave action in international waters...likely
precluding the need for any additional SCA's.

Winds will then strengthen ahead of a cold front Wednesday with most
of the marine zones likely reaching SCA criteria. by that point
though...gale warnings will likely be in place for strong winds that
will impact the region Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Gale
watches are currently in place for the entire Lower Great lakes
region.
