The short term will will be marked by a warming trend through
Thursday, areas of fog Thursday morning, and then the long
anticipated strong Arctic cold front Thursday evening. And if you're
at the beach, minor coastal flooding is expected this
afternoon/evening and Thursday afternoon/evening around high tide,
then conditions will get abruptly more hazardous as the front pushes
through.

With high pressure overhead, today will continue to be fairly
pleasant with a mix of clouds and sun (mostly clouds) expected to
continue this afternoon with temperatures spanning from the upper
50s to mid 60s across Deep South Texas. Overnight, winds will drop
off to become nearly calm, and with little difference in
temperatures and dew points, patchy fog to areas of fog will develop
across most of Deep South Texas. Once the fog clears around mid
morning tomorrow, skies will also gradually clear with mostly sunny
skies expected by the afternoon, and temperatures will rise into the
mid 70s across the County Warning Area (lower 70s along the coast).

Conditions will drastically change Thursday evening as an Arctic
airmass races southward across Texas and into Deep South Texas.
Right now, it looks like its frontal boundary will reach the
northern ranchlands sometime between 5 and 8 PM, and the Rio Grande
Valley between 7 and 10 PM. Strong northerly winds will quickly
usher in much drier and colder air with temperatures and dew points
expected to rapidly fall behind the front. With these strong winds
and cold temperatures, the wind chills will drop dangerously
low...making it feel like the temperatures are in the teens. A Wind
Chill Warning has been issued for these conditions, along with a
Hard Freeze Warning for the northern ranchlands and a Freeze Warning
for the Rio Grande Valley beginning late Thursday night and will
carry over into the long term period. This is still expected to be a
mainly dry frontal passage initially, with precipitation chances
increasing in the long term (more on that below).

As mentioned above, conditions at the beaches along the lower Texas
coast will quickly deteriorate behind the front. Winds will easily
reach 30 to 35 mph with gusts into the 40s, maybe even 50 mph range
and a Wind Advisory will likely be needed. These winds will lead to
a lot of other hazards...wave heights will build, increasing the
risk of rip currents and minor coastal flooding. And while the
warmer water might keep temperatures just above freezing, the winds
could be strong enough to overcome some of the marine effects on
temperatures, so we'll keep an eye on that. Regardless, it will feel
very cold with wind chills in the 20s.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday through next Wednesday)

Very cold temperatures await the region to start the long term
period thanks to the cold front mentioned in the short term
forecast. The cold is forecast to linger through Sunday
(Christmas) morning before warming up next week.

Freeze and Hard Freeze warnings are in effect through Noon on Friday
with additional Freeze and Hard Freeze warnings likely needed Friday
night/Saturday morning and Saturday night/Sunday morning. An ongoing
Wind Chill Warning to start the period may need to be extended into
Friday afternoon through Saturday morning depending on how quickly
winds calm on Friday. A Wind Advisory is likely to be issued later
tonight or early Thursday for the coastal counties due to winds
gusting over 40 mph a few hours late Thursday night into Friday
morning. The strong northerly wind will also push water near, if not
over, Highway 4 out to Boca Chica Beach Friday morning. Coastal
flooding and numerous beach hazards are also expected through the
holiday weekend. There is also an outside chance (so you're
telling me there's a chance...) at some sleet for parts of eastern
Cameron and Willacy Counties; more on that down below. I think
that about covers it.

Now for a bit more about the "why" behind this forecast... A strong
Arctic high will be settling over northern Texas Friday afternoon,
which should calm the winds during the day. Even then, a breath of
wind coupled with temperatures in the middle 30s and wind chill
values between 10 to 25 degrees remain possible Friday afternoon
into Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, an H5 shortwave will be diving down the western side of
the longwave trough over the eastern third of the US. That *may*
help enhance the coastal trough forecast to develop off the coast of
Tamaulipas late Friday night into Saturday. The coastal trough could
lead to a fair amount of cloud cover along the coast during the
time. As a result, have kept temperatures a little warmer, but still
below freezing, than those in the Brooks/Kenedy Ranches, Brush
Country, Rio Grande Plains, and Upper Rio Grande Valley. It would
also lead to temperatures possibly remaining "stuck" in the 30s
again for the Lower and Middle Rio Grande Valley Friday and Saturday
afternoons. One more cold night is in store Christmas Eve into
Christmas Day with another freeze possible for much of the County
Warning Area (CWA).

Models and ensemble guidance have continued to nudge the coastal
trough axis a little more north. Therefore, have gone ahead and kept
precipitation chances around 20 percent for eastern Willacy and
Cameron Counties late Friday night into Saturday morning. Now, the
biggest question you may be asking is... Will it snow!? No. However,
there may be some sleet, as mentioned above. There will be a
saturated layer between 925mb and 700mb, which may be enough to
allow for some precipitation to form. With the temperatures at 775
mb to 700 mb being above freezing, no ice nuclei will really be able
to form (hence the *no* to the snow question). As those water
droplets fall, they will go through a sub-freezing and slightly drier
layer between 775 mb and 925 mb and have a chance to freeze. Add
in some very dry air at the surface allowing for some evaporative
cooling of the droplets and it *may* be enough to allow some sleet
to form. The best chance for this would be just inland from the
immediate coast to about the I-69E/US-77 corridor. While there is
a low probability (10-20%) of this occurring, it is worth
mentioning and will be monitored the next few days.

Much warmer weather is expected in the week following Christmas with
50s and 60s possible Monday and Tuesday afternoons and overnight
lows in the 40s and 50s. So still seasonably cool, but not nearly as
cold as this coming weekend.

morning Thursday with a strong front expected to arrive into the

Now through Thursday Night... Moderate northerly winds and seas
of 2 to 5 feet across the Lower Texas coastal waters will prevail
through Thursday. Then marine conditions will abruptly turn
hazardous Thursday evening due to the passage of a strong Arctic
cold front and the associated very strong northerly winds and high
seas. Gale warnings have been posted, starting at 6 PM on
Thursday, and gusts to near storm-force cannot totally be ruled
out at this time. Rain chances will also increase with this front.

Friday through Tuesday... Gale conditions are likely to be
ongoing to start the period with a Gale Warning in effect for the
Laguna Madre through 3 PM CST Friday and 6 AM CST Saturday for the
Gulf waters. A developing coastal trough will keep winds and seas
elevated through the holiday weekend with Small Craft Advisories
likely through Christmas Day. The pressure gradient finally begins
to weak over the Lower Texas Coast early next week with lower winds
and seas returning. A few rain showers are possible Friday night
into Saturday due to the coastal trough.

morning for the potential to see elevated fire weather conditions
across areas east of I-69C/US 281. The combination of strong
