.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves offshore today bringing milder and mainly dry
weather, except for the risk of a few showers across southeast
New England. A cold front drops south through New England and
will bring rain Thursday into Thursday night, which will
transition to wintry mix of sleet, snow and perhaps some
freezing rain from north to south on Friday as colder air pushes
in. Cold and dry weather is expected on Saturday and Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1240 AM update...

Issued a dense fog advisory for RI and SE MA as dense fog has
become fairly widespread with vsbys 1/4SM. Otherwise, no changes
to the forecast.

Previous discussion...

Scaled back on PoPs tonight as hi-res guidance has a just a few
showers with deeper moisture remaining to the west. Highest PoPs
will be across western New Eng. Otherwise, areas of fog, locally
dense, should remain confined to the south coast as low level
flow turns S/SW. Not much change in temps overnight with temps
holding in the 30s. Any risk for spotty light freezing rain will
be in western MA, but this is a low probability.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Stronger advection of warmer and more humid air expected
Thursday into Thursday night. A front should continue to push
its way towards southern New England, reaching western MA in the
evening, and near the Cape Cod Canal towards Friday morning.
The big, and critical, question is how quickly the colder air
follows in the wake of this front. At present, thinking there
will be about a 2-3 hour lag. So, most of the precipitation
will be in the form of rain through about midnight Friday. with
a gradual transition to sleet and snow. Some freezing rain is
also possible, but should be rather brief. The main concern will
be the amount of sleet we could see, and the timing right about
in line with the morning commute. There is still some
variability in the guidance for timing. Some detail tweaks in
later forecasts are likely.

Continued the Winter Storm Watch, mainly for the possible impact
of sleet and freezing rain on the Friday morning commute. Most
likely looking at advisory level snow, sleet and ice amounts.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Cold front produces a messy wintry mix Friday

* High pressure and arctic air mass builds in behind a cold front
  this weekend supporting cold but quiet weather

* Warming trend early next week

Friday...

Messy conditions forecast during the morning commute on Friday
as a cold front pushes through southern New England. Warm air
out ahead of the front will support rain to start early Friday,
but as low- level cold air surges in from the northwest we'll
see a changeover in the precipitation type from northwest to
southeast. A brief period of freezing rain will be possible
during the changeover, but it's expected that we'll see a quick
transition to sleet on Friday morning. Hi-resolution model
guidance extending out 48 hours and beyond is in fair agreement
that by 12Z (7am local time) much of the region will have
experienced a changeover from rain to sleet. BUFKIT soundings
from the NAM3km nested model supports this scenario with a deep
freezing layer surging into the low-levels below a warm nose at
850 hPa.

The challenge for Friday will be determining when and where a
changeover from sleet to snow will occur. Many of the mesoscale
short-term models have the levels above 850 hPa cooling at a
slow rate supporting sleet for most of the day for areas south
and east of the I-90 corridor. Areas north and west of I-90 may
see a changeover to snow as early as mid-morning Friday. When
that occurs accumulations of heavy wet snow on the order of 1-4
inches will be possible throughout the day on Friday. Cold front
and associated precipitation will be clear of southern New
England by around 7PM. Precip will linger a bit longer over
southeast MA, the Cape, and Islands.

Saturday and Sunday...

As the cold front exits the region on Friday night, flash freeze
will be a concern as deep-northwest flow advects an arctic air
mass into southern New England. Low temperatures will dive into
the single digits by Saturday morning resulting in icy
conditions on roads left untreated. High pressure will support
clear skies and light winds on Saturday afternoon. High pressure and
quiet weather persists into Sunday as well as another night of
single digit to perhaps sub-zero temperatures.

Next Week...

Arctic high pressure shifts east of southern New England late
next weekend supporting a southerly return flow into the region.
This will support a warming trend into the middle of next week.
Long-term models are resolving a coastal low-pressure system
developing along the east coast early next week, but both
deterministic and ensemble model guidance keeps this as a
weak/disorganized system that passes well south and east of
southern New England. Nonetheless we'll be watching this feature
closely for any changes.

LIFR conditions in dense fog across RI and SE MA. Otherwise,
variable conditions will trend to IFR with stratus and patchy
fog.

Today and tonight...Moderate confidence

LIFR dense fog lingers a few hours into the morning, otherwise
widespread IFR conditions as periods of rain overspread southern
New England, becoming widespread tonight. Rain changes to sleet
and freezing rain 06-12z in northern MA, possibly getting to
BOS-BDL around 12z.

Friday...Moderate confidence.

Widespread IFR. Sleet changes to snow along and north of route 2
corridor. Rain across CT, RI and SE MA changes to sleet and
freezing rain 12-18z. Sleet and freezing rain reaches the south
coast by 18z, then overspreading Cape Cod. N/NE winds 10-20 kt
with Cape/Islands shifting from SW to N by 15z.
