through the region Friday afternoon. A powerful coastal storm
will impact at least parts of the region Saturday into Saturday
night, bringing heavy snow, strong winds and coastal flooding.
While some uncertainty remains with the exact storm track, there
is increasing confidence in significant snow across eastern
Massachusetts and Rhode Island with near blizzard conditions
across southeast MA. Drier weather then returns with below
normal temperatures Sunday before a warm up next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

1 AM update...

No major changes from previous forecast. Light SSW winds and
increasing clouds will result in conditions not nearly as cold
as previous nights. In addition, increasing deep layer moisture
and weak synoptic scale lift from approaching short wave and
convergence with advancing frontal boundary, may yield scattered
snow showers or flurries at times.  Earlier discussion below.

Tonight high pressure moves offshore, while a trough of low
pressure tracks eastward from the Great Lakes region towards New
England. Southernly flow ahead of the approaching cold front
will bring increasing moisture and clouds through the overnight
hours, with a slight chance of light snow showers across far
interior MA late.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...

Friday...

A cold front moves across Southern New England during the afternoon.
Pre-frontal southwest flow will allow temps to reach well into the
30s. Plenty of cloud cover expected and cannot rule out a few snow
showers around.

Overnight Friday into Saturday...

Highlights...

*  A significant winter storm is now likely for southern New England
   very late Friday night into Saturday evening with significant
   snowfall and strong winds. Highest confidence in significant
   snowfall across eastern MA and RI with near blizzard conditions
   possible for southeastern MA.

*  There remains some uncertainty with the exact storm track which
   will have a direct impact on accumulations and where the heaviest
   snowfall sets up.

* In addition to potential significant snowfall, strong winds will
  lead to bitterly cold wind chills on Saturday along with minor to
  moderate coastal flooding.

Details...

Heavy snow...

Still enough spread in the deterministic and ensemble suite of
guidance to make for a somewhat uncertain forecast with respect to
snowfall amounts and axis of heaviest snowfall. However, the trend
in the guidance has been further east. The GEFS ensembles are pretty
much all near or S and E of the benchmark with main focus for heavy
snow across SE New Eng. However, the Canadian Ensembles and
especially RGEM (Canadian 10km) has now caved to the EC and tracks a
bomb cyclone near the 70W/40N benchmark, which is typically the
indicator for heavy snow potential across the I-95 corridor in RI
and eastern MA. This does put the American models (GFS and NAM) as
outliers against the international guidance. So all eyes are on the
Thursday 12z guidance. Even though the GFS did not quite cave in to
the international guidance, there was a notable westward jog, which
suggests that an out-to-sea and/or shut out condition (bust
scenario) is looking less likely. A note about the NAM is that
even though it is great for deep East Coast cyclogenesis events,
we have to take its output with a huge grain of salt until we
are within 36 hours, and especially 24 hours. For example, the
Wed 18z run was rather extreme in that it swung from a hit for
Eastern MA/RI at 12z to almost a complete miss for most of our
CWA at 18z. That was a red flag as in the forecasting world, we
want to see model continuity. That also indicates that the NAM
was still struggling to sample the jet energy, which was up in
the Yukon Territories at that time and removed from upper air
sampling sites.

In addition, we are increasingly concerned about blizzard or near-
blizzard conditions developing. With 925mb winds at 75 kts,
temperatures in the teens to low 20s, it is looking likely that
blowing snow would result in significantly reduced or near-zero
visibilities at times for southeastern MA. Right now, we are most
confident in blizzard conditions developing from Plymouth county
into Cape/Islands. It is not out of the question that the Providence
to Boston corridor could come into play but we need to see further
confirmation of the westward trend. The silver lining is that
because we are dealing with dry powdery fluff, there is less of a
concern for snow loading issues except for parts of the Outer Cape
and Nantucket due to the coastal front.

Do want to briefly touch on the potential for exceptional to extreme
snowfall rates. Both NAM and GFS Bufkit soundings show 80-90 units
of omega coinciding with the favorable snow growth region. Given
that a double barrel low could develop with the potential for an eye-
like feature at some point, wherever the mesoscale snow band sets up
could see 3 to even 4 inches per hour snowfall rates. With this
forecast package, we have capped the totals at 24 inches. But if we
get more confidence (especially if the GFS comes further west in
line with the international guidance), the forecast amounts for
southeastern MA could go up into the 30 to 36 inches range. And with
the winds gusting over 50 to 60 mph and temps well below freezing,
stay off the roads on Saturday if possible.

Another challenge is to figure out the northwest edge of the heavy
snow. So lower than average confidence in the snow forecast for the
Connecticut River valley and Western MA. Given the high SLRs and the
potential for westward shift of the precipitation shield, we opted
to expand the Winter Storm Watches to Hartford county as well as the
eastern portions of the Berkshire East Slopes.

Strong winds...

Strong winds are very much a concern given the explosive deepening
and strong low level jet that develops. Cold boundary layer supports
excellent mixing and strong to damaging winds are possible Sat into
Sat evening, especially for RI and eastern MA. The magnitude and
extent of the strong winds will depend on the track of the storm,
but expect 50 mph winds with localized hurricane-force gusts are
possible especially across Cape/Islands and portions of east coastal
MA.

Dangerous cold...

With the aforementioned winds and temps in the teens to low 20s
Saturday afternoon for much of the area, wind chill values will be
between +5 to -10F. So not quite Wind Chill Advisory criteria, but
given the potential for near white-out conditions at times, again,
don't venture out if at all possible.

Details...

Powerful winter storm continues to move away from southern New
England Saturday night into Sunday. Winds will turn northwest
and diminish rather quickly, especially after midnight Sunday.
Not expecting much opportunity for melting through Monday. It
will remain rather cold with below normal temperatures during
this time.

High pressure moves offshore Monday, setting the stage for a
slight warmup Tuesday into Thursday. Not expecting much for
precipitation chances until another cold front approaches
towards the middle of next week. At this juncture, it appears to
be more in the form of rain than snow.

MVFR to localized IFR conditions developing as light snow moves
in from the southwest. N to NNE winds increasing to 15-20 kt
across interior terminals and 25-30 kt across coastal terminals.

Saturday...moderate confidence.

 Cape Cod and the Islands ***

Widespread IFR conditions across RI and eastern MA with LIFR
possible at times, with near-zero vsby and NE wind gusts up to
60 mph at times, yielding near-blizzard conditions at times.
For interior terminals, N winds 15-20 kt with gusts 30-35 kt.
IFR/LIFR in near blizzard conditions may extend westward into
the Worcester Hill and eastern CT. LLWS of 70 kt at 2500 ft.

Saturday night...moderate confidence.

Near blizzard conditions at 00z in IFR/LIFR conditions, will
improve by late evening and especially overnight. Elsewhere
accumulating snow ends from west to east, with MVFR/IFR
conditions at 00z improving to MVFR/VFR overnight. Gusty NNW
winds will result in considerable blowing and drifting snow,
even after accumulating snow ends. Preliminary snow totals...

KBOS...18-24" with higher drifts
KPVD...12-18" with higher drifts
KORH...8-12" with higher drifts
KBDL...6-10" with higher drifts

KBOS Terminal...heaviest snow with possibly 2-4" hourly
snowfall rates along with strongest winds 18z Sat thru 00z Sun.

70W/40N benchmark, bringing heavy snow, near-zero vsby and
storm-force conditions with 30-40 kt winds and 45-60 kt gusts.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday Night: Strong winds with gusts up to 55 kt. Rough seas
up to 28 ft. Chance of snow. Areas of visibility 1 nm or less.

Sunday: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds with gusts
up to 30 kt. Rough seas up to 16 ft.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The other aspect of this storm will be coastal flooding along east
coastal MA. For the Sat morning high tide, seas and winds will be in
the process of ramping up. We expect a 1-2 ft surge with worst case
being pockets of minor flooding. The greater concern is for the Sat
evening high tide. Despite the astronomical tide being lower, we
expect a surge up to 3 ft with 4 ft for Cape Cod Bay. 25-30 ft
seas offshore (5 to 10 ft on bays and sounds) along with NE
winds 30-40 mph and gusts 60+ mph will lead to widespread minor
and pockets of moderate coastal flooding. Finally, there will be
residual minor flooding/splashover on Sunday morning for Cape
Cod Bay. That said, the timing of the max surge with high tide
will be critical to the potential coastal flood impacts.
