.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front lifts north across the region this morning and will be
accompanied by a period of showers which moves across SNE later this
morning into early afternoon. This will be followed by gusty winds
and unseasonably mild temperatures this afternoon. Mainly dry
conditions tonight, then low pressure and its attendant cold front
will bring a period of widespread rain Monday afternoon into Monday
evening. Blustery and colder conditions follow Tuesday. A wave of
low pressure will pass well south of the region Wednesday into
Wednesday night, but there is a low risk for a period of wet snow if
it tracks further north than expected. Above normal temperatures
return Thursday and Friday, but some rain may impact the region
sometime Friday into part of Saturday. Much colder temperatures will
arrive sometime next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1030 AM Update...

Locally dense fog has persisted along the south coast and
surrounding waters so have extended the Dense Fog Advisory
there through 1 PM. Boats crossing the ACK and MVY sound
reported 0 mi vsby despite SW winds gusting 25-30 kt. With SW
flow off waters in the upper 30s to low 40s, dew point
depressions along the south coast into Cape Cod and the Islands
have remained at or very close to zero which explained the
stubborn fog despite what appears to be good low-level mixing.
Other than that, a line of showers with locally heavy downpours
south of the Pike is racing across southern New England. Made
slight adjustment to the PoPs and temps. For the latter, have
really seen quite a temperature contrast between the MA coastal
plains, which are in the 50s vs. further north temps are still
in the low 40s. So did some interpolation to the hourly temps.
Forecast max temps still look on track.

Previous discussion...

Scattered convective showers are lifting NE across SE New Eng
associated with low level theta-e advection at the nose of a
modest low level jet along with some elevated instability via
steepening mid level lapse rates. These showers will exit by
daybreak with areas of fog this morning as higher dewpoint air
advects northward with the warm front. Dry weather first part of
the morning will be short lived as next shortwave quickly
approaches from the west. A surge of higher PWATs ahead of the
shortwave with increasing forcing will bring a period of showers
which move west to east across SNE mid to late morning and
exiting SE New Eng this afternoon. The showers could be briefly
heavy but will not last more than a few hours in any given
location.

Behind the shortwave, the column dries with much drier mid level air
advecting into region this afternoon. This should allow for some
breaks of sun to develop in the interior, but low clouds will likely
persist near the south coast. 925 mb temps increase to 10-12C with
increasing SW flow this afternoon so temps should reach the low/mid
60s away from the south coast, but holding in the 50s near the south
coast. 50-60 kt low level jet will be over SNE this afternoon.
Soundings do show a strong inversion which will prevent these winds
from mixing down, but potential exists for 30-40 mph gusts this
afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Tonight...

CAMs all show a narrow line of convection ahead of the cold front
dropping south from northern New Eng this evening. These showers
will weaken as they move into northern MA in more stable
environment. Otherwise, mainly dry night expected with much lower
PWATs moving in from the north along with subsidence as mid level
shortwave to the north departs. This shortwave will bring a weak
cold front south across the region likely stalling near the south
coast toward daybreak. Very mild evening ahead of the front with
temps remaining well into the 50s, then cooling overnight through
the 40s and into the upper 30s across NW MA.

Monday...

Frontal wave ahead of upstream trough lifts NE from Ohio valley
moving into northern New Eng toward evening. Initial shot of rain
expected to lift across interior MA later in the morning and
afternoon associated with nose of a low level jet and accompanying
moisture transport with the 850 mb warm front. Then another area of
rain will move into the region from the west in the afternoon ahead
of the cold front. Some convective elements and heavier showers are
possible later in the afternoon as some elevated instability
develops. Focus for rainfall Monday will be across the interior,
with rain more spotty across SE New Eng.

As the low pres lifts NE from the Ohio valley, boundary near the
south coast will move north as a warm front. Temps will warm well
into the 50s to near 60 south of the boundary but remain in the 40s
to the north. It is uncertain how far north the warm front will get
which makes temp forecast more uncertain. Highest confidence of
warmer temps will be south of the Pike with lower confidence in
northern MA as it will depend on the location of the boundary. Gusty
SW winds develop later in the afternoon near the south coast as low
level jet approaches from the south.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights...

* Strong gusty winds Monday night into early Tuesday. Widespread
  rain Monday evening with perhaps a rumble of thunder or two. Rain
  rapidly ends once the cold front moves through.

* Dry, but cooler weather returns Tuesday into Tuesday night.

* Still monitoring the potential for wet snow late Wednesday into
  Wednesday night if low pressure tracks further north.

* Temperatures above normal late in the week. Rain possible Friday
  into Saturday. Turning cooler over the weekend at some point.

Monday night...

Trough over eastern Great Lakes Monday evening lifts into northern
New England/Nova Scotia by late Monday/very early Tuesday. Low
pressure lifts into northern New England/Nova Scotia while a cold
front slides through.

Main concern during this period is strong gusty winds along the
south coast early in the evening, but for most of the region once
the cold front passes through. Will see a roughly 35-70 kt SW low
level jet initially shift to the WNW/NW with speeds of 30-40 kts
toward midnight (in wake of the cold front). With the colder air
advecting in will have strong mixing within the boundary layer and
have bumped up wind speeds/gusts in the latest update per NAM/GFS
Bufkit soundings. Actually not completely out of the question that a
few spots flirt with Wind Advisory criteria for a bit, but have held
off on anything for now. Will see strong gusts overnight into early
Tuesday.

As was the case yesterday the guidance is in pretty good agreement
in timing, but the NAM/ECMWF is a bit more amplified with the trough
becoming negatively tilted resulting in a deeper low along with more
QPF and perhaps some convection. Have increased the QPF in the
latest update, but have held off from the thunder mention at this
point given the instability is fairly limited perhaps around 100-200
J/kg of MUCAPE. Some decent lapse rates as well, so may need to
include thunder if appears more likely with the CAM guidance.

The SW low level jet will bring some good speed convergence across
the region during the evening before shifting offshore late Monday
night. This will coincide with a 1-1.4 inch PWAT plume overhead,
which approaches the max values for this time of year at CHH per SPC
sounding climatology. So, there could be some heavy rainfall at
times especially given the forcing and if there are any
thunderstorms present. The plumes moves offshore late Monday/early
Tuesday as the low moves offshore. The result will be rain quickly
diminishing as drier air punches in wake of the cold front. As the
colder air wraps in there may be a few snowflakes that mix in, but
should not see any snowfall accumulation.

Aloft temperatures fall to -2 to -6 degrees Celsius as the colder
air advects in at 925 hPa. The result will be low temperatures
bottoming out in the 30s across southern New England.

Tuesday through much of Wednesday...

Mid level ridge builds from Ontario/central Great Lakes early on
Tuesday into eastern Quebec/Nova Scotia by early Wednesday. The high
builds over the region later on Tuesday before moving offshore on
Wednesday.

Dry and quiet weather through much of this period. Will be a bit
gusty across southern New England on Tuesday due to the tightened
pressure gradient from the exiting system and high nudging in. The
gusty winds will gradually diminish as the day progresses and
especially Tuesday night as high pressure builds overhead. Dry
through at least the first half of Wednesday for most, but will need
to watch the track of a potential coastal low for later Wednesday.
More details in the next section.

Temperature wise will be near to slightly warmer than seasonable
with highs in the 40s across much of the region. There will be a bit
of downsloping given the NW flow aloft with temps of -2 to -6
degrees Celsius.

Late Wednesday through Saturday...

Considerable uncertainty through this timeframe. Over the past
couple of days guidance has struggled with a couple different waves
lifting in from the southwest. Through this window will be under
cyclonic flow with two shortwaves to watch in the Wed-Fri timeframe
and a deeper trough lifting in late in the week into the weekend.

Have generally stuck pretty close to the NBM guidance with the only
exception being on the late Wednesday into early Thursday timeframe.
WPC cluster analysis shows that most of the variance with this wave
lifting in has to do with the intensity of the wave. The majority of
guidance leans toward a drier solution with this trough being
weaker/more suppressed with 63 members out of 100 (EPS/GEFS/GEPS).
Within these other 3 clusters there are a variety of reasons the
wave is weaker. Interestingly, cluster 1 (37 members most from
EPS/GEPS) has the highest variance of the 4 clusters features a more
amplified ridge and deeper trough. The result is a deeper coastal
low impacting the region and more northerly, similar to the
operational GEM guidance. Given the drier airmass in place along
with wet bulbing processes there could be some wet snow. Did
increase PoPs to slight chance/chance whereas the NBM was
essentially dry as EPS/GEPS guidance had roughly 40-90 percent
chances of QPF AOA 0.01". Do also have some low probs (10-50
percent) of 10:1 snowfall amounts AOA 1". Will be something we need
to closely monitor and look for more consensus.

A flip to drier weather on Thursday and potentially into a portion
of Friday as a weak high builds in. However, there is another subtle
shortwave lifting from the Gulf of Mexico into the Carolinas that
may result in another coastal low south of the region that we need
to keep an eye on. Have favored the consensus at this time for
Thursday with drier weather.

More substantial trough digs in from the central US late in the week
into the weekend with lots of uncertainty in timing/intensity and
position. Fortunately, temperature profiles at this point are too
warm for anything other than a plain rain. Though there could
potentially be some snowflakes mixing in during the night time.

Temperature wise will see above normal readings Thu/Fri and perhaps
into Saturday depending on timing a cold fronts passage. Readings
generally in the 50s for most of the time. Saturday readings range
from the mid 40s to low 50s. Stay tuned for future updates given
the uncertainty through this timeframe.

.AVIATION /16Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today...Moderate confidence.

IFR/LIFR with VLIFR especially along the south coast until
14-18Z, longest across the Cape/Islands due to stratus and fog.
Showers move west to east across SNE 14-18z, exiting SE New Eng
coast 18-20z. Conditions improve to MVFR/VFR in the afternoon
in the interior, but IFR/LIFR persisting along the south coast.
Increasing SW winds with gusts 25-35 kt developing late morning
through the afternoon. Will have LLWS concerns through much of
the day, but will also have gusty winds.

Tonight...Moderate confidence.

VFR in the interior. MVFR to LIFR along south coast due to
lingering stratus and fog. A few weakening showers may move
south into northern MA this evening. SW wind gusts 20-30 kt in
the evening diminishing and becoming W 5-15 kt overnight.

Monday...Moderate confidence.
