Dry weather with seasonably chilly temperatures continues
through tonight. A high impact storm brings multiple hazards
including high winds, coastal flooding, and heavy rainfall
Thursday night into Friday, followed by plummeting temperatures
Friday evening. Cold and dry for the holiday weekend, but a
chance for ocean effect snow showers late Friday night into
Saturday for the Cape and Islands. Quiet period of weather
continue into next week with cooler than normal temperatures.

Thursday we'll see benign weather for much of the day with
precipitation and gusts winds holding off until the evening and
early overnight hours. A deep mid level trough will dig into
the midwest on Thursday, pumping up the ridge just to our east
over the western Atlantic and directing a plume of highly
anomalous moisture and warmth from the Gulf of Mexico into New
England. PWATs will be around 300 percent of normal for late
December while 850 mb temps may approach 10C. This spells a mild
and very wet storm system for us given placement well within
the warm sector as the storm tracks well inland, through
upstate New York. The parent low will be strengthening over the
Great Lakes on Thursday night while a secondary low forms along
the frontal boundary over upstate New York, eventually lifting
into Canada by the weekend. Given this track and the surge of
warm, southerly air over our region it will be a largely rain
storm for us, though the highest elevations of the Berkshires
(generally over 1000 ft) could see a quick coating to an inch or
two of snow before 3 am when it flips to rain. Guidance came to
a remarkable consensus on this warmer solution for us quite
early, so confidence is high that we won't be dealing with
impactful snowfall. The main change between yesterday and today
is for a slightly faster system, which would limit the coastal
flooding potential for the late Friday high tide. There are
three main concerns we'll get into below.

The most widespread hazard and our primary concern with this
system is the strong, potentially damaging winds and the
potential for power outages. The magnitude of the low level jet
is highly anomolous (3-4 standard deviations above normal)
blowing 75-85 kts at 925 mb in the core which passes over
eastern and southeastern MA. This together with an extremely
strong pressure rise/fall couplet means all of the region
may see gusts as high as 50 mph. The best chance for gusts 55
to 60 or even 65 mph will be over eastern MA, potentially into
central MA and RI. Thus, the High Wind Watch has been upgraded
to a High Wind Warning for eastern MA and RI, while the High
Wind Watch was expanded into central MA. CT and western MA are
under a Wind Advisory. There remains some uncertainty as to how
well the winds will mix down given the sounding profiles, but
with time-height intervals showing 50 kts of wind down to 500ft
agl and 60 kts at 1000 ft, then with rain to help bring some
winds down, we shouldn't have trouble realizing these winds at
the surface. There will likely be two peaks in the wind gusts;
first in the morning as the core of the LLJ moves overhead,
then again in the evening as winds kick to the SW behind the
front and and CAA allows for deep mixing. The impact from any
power outages caused by these winds would be compounded by the
fact that 1)frigid temperatures will quickly follow Friday night
and 2)winds remain gusty on Saturday which may hamper
restoration efforts.

The secondary concern is minor to moderate coastal flooding
potential Friday morning. As mentioned above, we are no longer
concerned about the Friday evening high tide while the morning
high tide in Narragansett Bay has a better chance of seeing
moderate flooding. See the coastal flooding section for
details.

Finally, this will be a very wet system. Given the highly anomalous
moisture and wind (forcing for ascent) mentioned above,
widespread rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely, with up
to 3 inches possible. This would lead to the potential of some
urban and poor drainage flooding as well as potential for minor
flooding on the Connecticut River from a combination of rainfall
and snowmelt upstream. The heaviest rainfall totals will likely
be in the Berkshires where orographic lift could help them
reach that 3 inches of QPF.

Friday night through Sunday...

Cold front will be well to the east by Fri evening with much colder
air rapidly advecting into SNE on gusty SW winds. While we can't
rule out a few slick spots on roadways in the evening as temps
rapidly fall below freezing, this is not a traditional flash freeze
situation with cold and moist air coming down from the north. Strong
SW winds will be accompanied by rapid drying and dewpoints falling
through the teens and single numbers. As such, there will be a
rather short window for black ice before roads dry out.

Mainly dry Fri night with dry slot overhead, but expect scattered
ocean effect snow showers developing over the south coastal waters
later Fri night from strong cold advection on SW flow, and some of
these snow showers may impact the Cape/Islands. The main concern Fri
evening will be for a period of strong to damaging SW winds,
especially over the Cape/Islands. Soundings show a deep and well
mixed boundary layer with potential for a few hours of 50-60 mph
wind gusts Cape/Islands. Elsewhere, 40-50 mph SW wind gusts
lingering into Fri evening before the wind gusts begin to drop off
through the overnight. Temps will be falling rapidly through the
evening with Sat morning lows in the teens (20s Cape/Islands), with
single numbers over the interior high terrain.

The weekend looks blustery and cold as deep trough will be over the
NE. Temps well below normal with highs in the 20s and lows mostly in
the teens. While dry weather will prevail with some diurnal CU, a
few ocean effect snow showers are possible over the Cape/Islands
Saturday from WSW flow and steep lapse rates.

Monday through Wednesday...

Mainly dry with a moderating trend in temps as high pres from the
Midwest eventually moves off the mid Atlc coast. However, temps will
remain below normal.

to E during the afternoon. Local IFR conditions may develop
across the higher terrain towards the Berkshires and in the
Worcester Hills by early evening. Timing is the main concern
here. Increasing risk for -RA/-SN during the afternoon.

Thursday night...Moderate confidence.

MVFR/IFR cigs for most terminals in RA/+RA. MVFR/VFR possible
toward FMH/HYA/ACK early, becoming IFR toward daybreak. Strong
SE winds.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Friday: Mainly MVFR, with areas IFR possible. Strong winds with
gusts up to 60 kt. RA.

Friday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Strong
winds with gusts up to 50 kt. Slight chance SHSN.

Saturday: VFR. Windy with gusts up to 35 kt.

Saturday Night: VFR. Windy with local gusts up to 30 kt.

Winds and seas continue to diminish through tonight as a high
pressure moves across the waters. Increasing easterly flow
Thursday once this high pressure moves off to our NE, and SE
winds ramp up to near Storm force by sunrise on Friday. Seas
increase to 11-14 ft by sunrise Friday.

Outlook /Friday Night through Monday/...

Friday: Moderate risk for storm force winds with gusts up to
50 kt. Rough seas up to 18 ft. Rain.

Friday Night: gale force winds with local gusts up to 45 kt.
Rough seas up to 19 ft. Chance of snow showers, chance of rain
showers.

Saturday: Strong winds with gusts up to 35 kt. Rough seas up to
16 ft. Chance of snow showers.

Saturday Night: Strong winds with gusts up to 30 kt. Rough seas
up to 13 ft. Slight chance of snow showers.

Christmas Day: Moderate risk for Small Craft Advisory winds
with gusts up to 25 kt. Rough seas up to 11 ft. Slight chance
of snow showers.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
* Coastal Flood Watch for both the east and south coasts Fri AM

We continue to expect widespread minor coastal flooding with
pockets of moderate coastal flooding along with beach erosion.
It is rather unusual to have coastal flooding on an east
southeast wind and for it to impact both coasts, but this is a
highly anomalous system.

The magnitude of coastal flooding will be determined by how
quickly the winds/seas ramp up. The earlier this occurs would
result in more significant issues, and a later timing would mean
less of an impact. Guidance has been trending earlier, which
means a better odds of moderate flooding along the south coast
for places like Narragansett Bay. The high tides occur around
7-9 AM Friday along the south coasts, and in the 10 AM to noon
timeframe across the eastern MA Coast. Given an ESE wind
direction and support from the various guidance, we are
expecting a 1.5 to 3.5 foot storm surge. This should yield
widespread minor coastal flooding, with pockets of moderate
coastal flooding. Typically vulnerable shoreline roads may
become flooded and impassable within a few hours of high tide.
In addition, there may be significant beach erosion on the south
coast, including ocean- exposed beaches of Rhode Island and
Westport. Significant beach erosion may also occur on the south
side of Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket.
