.SYNOPSIS...

High pressure brings dry weather for tonight. After a chilly start,
tonight will see steady or slowly rising temperatures overnight.
Milder air will generate rain, possibly some freezing drizzle at the
start Wednesday morning. Drier and colder weather returns later
Wednesday night and Thursday. High confidence in accumulating
snow very late Thursday night into Friday, but amounts and
westward extent of them remains uncertain. Regardless, dry but
much colder weather should return Saturday. Milder Sunday with a
period of light wintry mix/light rain showers likely. This will
be followed by the potential for a shot of arctic air later
Monday into Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...

High pressure centered south of New England will move east and well
offshore tonight. Surface winds from the west will turn from the
southwest, drawing milder temps up from the south overnight. Most if
not all of the night should be precip-free. If precipitation does
start earlier than forecast, then some freezing drizzle may be
possible late at night, mainly in the East Slope area and/or Western
Hartford County. If this happens, it would be a slippery morning
commute in that area.

Clear skies early tonight will give way to increasing clouds
overnight, caused by the lift as the warm air moves overhead. Min
temps will fall to the 20s early tonight, then steady or slowly
rising overnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...

Overview...

Warm air moves north on southerly winds. This will generate drizzle
early and rain during the day and evening. Drier air moves in
Wednesday night.

Details...

Wednesday...

Model soundings inland around sunrise are close to freezing, but
above. Surface temps could stay below. If precipitation were to form
in this environment, it would form freezing drizzle with the best
chance in Western MA and North-central CT. Will mention a chance of
freezing drizzle first thing in the morning, but confidence in this
is low.

Meanwhile, low pressure moves across the Great Lakes. A supporting
upper jet swings around the south side of the low with the nose of
the jet moving over Srn New England. This will generate lift during
the morning, and south winds will bringing temps above freezing
through the column. Dew point This will mean rain for the region. s
will also climb, reaching the upper 30s and 40s during the day. PW
values increase to 0.8 inches, above average for early January, so
expect a period of rain.

Temperatures at 925-mb will support max sfc temps in the low 50s in
Eastern MA/RI/NE CT. Cooler temps aloft to the west will support 40s
in Western MA and North-central CT.

Wednesday night...

Cold front moves through Srn New England in the evening. Drier air
moves in behind the front, pushing the rain offshore early in the
night. Expect partial clearing after midnight due to that drier air.
Dew points fall again, but only to the upper 20s to mid 30s. Expect
temperatures to fall to near the dew point values.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Highlights...

* High Confidence in accumulating snow very late Thu night into Fri,
  but amounts and westward extent of them remain uncertain

* Friday AM Rush Hour will likely be impacted with Ptype issues

Details...

Thursday...

Dry weather on Thursday as a chillier airmass works in from the
west. Afternoon temperatures will mainly be in the 30s to near 40.

Thursday night and Friday...

The main concern with this forecast package revolves around very
late Thursday night into Friday. We have high confidence that
accumulating snow will impact the region and likely Friday morning
commute as well. However, the amounts and westward extent of the
heavier QPF field remain uncertain at this point. We will break
things down a bit more below.

A pretty impressive shortwave across the Ohio Valley on Thursday
will move eastward into New England very late Thu night into Fri.
This will back the 700 mb flow and induce modest mid level
frontogenesis. Specific timing is uncertain given the time range,
but expect snow to overspread the region from southwest to northeast
after midnight. It will probably be snowing in most locations by
daybreak. This coupled with temps below freezing, should allow snow
to accumulate quickly on untreated roadways. This will likely impact
the Friday morning commute. Based on the thermal profiles, Ptype
should be snow except towards the Cape/Islands where there will be
some issues depending on the exact track of the system.

All the guidance is very supportive of accumulating snow very late
Thu night into Fri. The uncertainty revolves around whether this is
a few inches of snow or if there is the potential for a band of 6"+.
This will depend upon how close to the coast and how quickly this
system intensifies. The shortwave looks fairly robust, which could
lend itself to a track closer to the coast. However, the upper level
pattern is very progressive & with the lack of blocking the
intensification could occur too late. It appears that the American
models are tending to intensify it closer to the coast with a 700 mb
closed low attempting to form nearby. Meanwhile...the International
model suite does this later and the mid level centers do not close
off until it is too far east of our region. Given the spread in
guidance we blended the models for now. Keep in mind we are still 72-
96 hours out from this event in the model world and changes are
expected with later runs.

So in a nutshell...we have high confidence in much of the region
receiving a few inches of snow very late Thu night into Fri.
However, whether we see a band of 6"+ inches remains to be seen and
will depend upon if the low pressure system intensifies early/close
enough for that to occur. Greatest risk for this right now appears
to be in the vicinity of the I-95 corridor. Fortunately, this system
is progressive with most of the snow likely in a 4 to 8 hour window.

Friday night and Saturday...

Dry, but blustery and very cold weather will follow Friday night
into Saturday. Low temps should generally be well down into the
teens Fri night and single digits are possible in the outlying
locations if the winds are able to decouple. High temps on Sat will
only be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s in most locales.

Sunday...

High pressure moves off the coast as a cold front approaches from
the west. This will allow for a return southwest flow of milder air
to work back into the region. High temps should recover into the 40s
across the coastal plain. How temps recover across the interior is
hard to say at this point, but will depend upon how well the low
level inversion can be mixed out. A modest southwest LLJ and
moisture return should allow for a period of light precipitation.
Ptype mainly light rain showers along the coastal plain, but a light
wintry mix would be possible across the interior if the low level
cold air holds of a time. Precipitation amounts though should be
rather light given main forcing/dynamics passing well to our
northwest.

Monday and Tuesday...

The GEFS/EPS are in fairly good agreement in the potential for an
arctic outbreak later Mon into Tue. The magnitude of this remains to
be seen, but sub -20C 850T seem reasonable of a time. This could
result in low temps mainly in the single digits Mon night and highs
between 15 and 25 on Tuesday. Wind Chills may be well below zero for
a time too!

.AVIATION /21Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Tonight...

VFR most of the night, but with patches of 2000-3000 foot ceilings
forming toward sunrise. Vsbys above 6 miles. Patchy freezing drizzle
possible toward morning in parts of CT and Western MA, but
probability is low.

Wednesday...

South winds will bring increasing temperatures through the day. MVFR
ceilings/vsbys in developing rain during the morning. Conditions
continue to lower in rain during the day with periods of IFR/LIFR
possible. South winds will gust 20-25 kt.

Wednesday night...

Rain moves offshore early in the night. MVFR/IFR conditions improve
to VFR. Winds shift from the West-Southwest and diminish.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Thursday through Sunday/...

Thursday: VFR. Windy with local gusts up to 30 kt.

High pressure south of the region will move out to sea tonight. Low
pressure over the Great Lakes passes north of New England, but turns
surface winds out of the south with increasing speeds. Winds will
gust 25-30 kt later tonight. Winds of 25-30 kt continue on the
nearshore waters Wednesday, and increase to 35 kt on the outer
waters. Winds shift from the west-southwest Wednesday night as a
cold front moves through. Winds will diminish at that time.

Five foot seas continue on the outer waters tonight with lesser seas
closer to shore. The south winds will build seas to 5 to 9 feet
Wednesday on most exposed waters. These rough seas will linger
Wednesday night.

A Gale Warning has been issued for the outer waters for Wednesday
and early Wednesday night. Small Craft Advisories are in effect for
the nearshore waters. Winds of 25-30 kt will take place on the outer
waters late tonight before increasing to Gale.

Rain develops Wednesday morning and spreads from southwest to
northeast. Once the cold front moves through Wednesday evening,
expect rain to taper off.
