.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure lingers across southern New England tonight. A low
pressure tracking to our west and north brings showers and gusty
winds to our region late Sunday through early Monday. Mainly
dry, tranquil weather extends through Wednesday ahead of a
potent cold front sometime mid to late week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1000 PM Update:

Tranquil evening across Southern New England tonight with ridge
of high pressure stationed to our south. Main forecast challenge
continues to be on hourly and the low temperature forecast.
Winds have eased to 5 mph or less in some spots in northwest MA
and portions of Hartford and Tolland County in CT, with Orange
having dropped to 33 degrees at this hour. Contrast that with
WSW/SW winds around 5 to 15 mph across most of central/eastern
MA and RI and temps are running well in the 40s to lower to mid
50s at Westerly and Nantucket! Difficult to really show this
type of spatial variation well in the forecast, and while winds
should begin to ease up to an extent early Sunday morning across
eastern areas, mildest lows (upper 30s-mid 40s) should be
prevalent across eastern and southeast New England, and
generally cooler (around freezing to a few above that) across
western and northwest MA.

Infrared satellite imagery shows clear skies currently across
the Northeast region, and that should continue for the next few
hrs with good radiational cooling where winds are lighter in
western interior New England. However it's quite a shield of
extensive cirrus that's moving our way associated with a well
developed frontal system moving in from the OH/TN Valley and
southern Plains region. These clouds should advance ENE for the
second half of the evening, and by daybreak into sunrise,
anticipate a considerable amount of high clouds/filtered sun.

Previous Discussion...

A quiet and beautiful day is in progress across southern New
England this afternoon. Regional satellite imagery shows nothing
but clear skies save for the faintest of high clouds passing
over eastern MA and some ocean effect strato cu well offshore.
Winds have come down, as expected, as the surface high pressure
approaches and the pressure gradient slackens. For this reason
the Small Craft Advisories have been taken down for the
nearshore waters where winds will continue to gust 18 to 24 kts
through the overnight hours. There remains some question as to
how cool we will get tonight given marginally favorable
radiational cooling conditions; while winds will be light over
the interior, high clouds move in with a mid level warm front
ahead of the approaching weather system. This will shut off
efficient cooling after 5-9Z but thinking is that we'll still
cool quite a bit before that, so trended toward the colder MOS
guidance for lows, in the upper 20s for the highest elevations.
Elsewhere mid to upper 30s will be more common, with 40s for the
Cape and islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Sunday will be the more unsettled day of the weekend with the
approach and passing of a mid level shortwave and surface
reflection which lift through the Ohio Valley during the late
morning Sunday and across New England Sunday evening/overnight.
Out ahead of this system winds back out of the southwest with
the warm front, advecting in a marginally warmer airmass, more
noticeably for the south coast. This warm air will help keep us
from dealing with any wintry mix. Precipitation will itself be
slow to start thanks to a very dry airmass to start the day
(PWATs around a quarter of an inch). Bufkit shows the column
saturating from the top down through 18Z for western MA/CT and
23Z for eastern MA. So, while clouds will continue to thicken
and lower the whole day won't be a washout, especially for
eastern southern New England. As moisture advection kicks in
for the afternoon so too does good forcing both from a
strengthening 40-60 kt 925 mb jet and favorable placement
beneath the left exit region of a 300 mb jet. Together this will
bring generally 0.25-0.50 inches of rain from noon Sunday
through sunrise on Monday.

Notably, while a 50-60 kt jet will be screaming overhead during
this time, model soundings show a stout inversion between 950
and 900 mb which will help to keep the bulk of the strong winds
aloft. Even so wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will be possible along
the south coast, and a Gale Watch is in effect over the southern
outer waters where winds could be strongest during the early
overnight hours. For details on the minor coastal flooding
impacts expected see the coastal flooding section below.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights

Latest guidance suite had reasonably good agreement on the
overall evolution of this portion of the forecast, but differed
in the details from the middle of next week into next weekend.
Looking like a broadly zonal flow across most of the CONUS early
next week changes to a central USA mid level trough and
corresponding downstream ridge over the Eastern Seaboard during
the middle of next week. Eventually, this mid level trough moves
over the East Coast late next week. Detail differences get
rather muddied towards next weekend. It will be a matter of
several days to get those forecast wrinkles ironed out, which is
not atypical this time of year.

The passage of a cold front early Monday will lead to a period
of gusty W to NW winds. A period of stronger gusts is possible
Wednesday into Wednesday night. Will need to consider wind
headlines with later forecasts, especially for the coastal
waters.

Mainly a dry forecast, expect for a period from Wednesday into
Wednesday night. This timing may change slightly, but have
rather high confidence in a period of wet weather across
southern New England ahead of a pair of fronts. Showers
generally end Wednesday night into Thursday. With the expected

of our region would get into the warm sector. In fact, some
locations could be approaching high temperatures of 60 degrees.
Thus, too warm for much in any snowfall.

Temperature should return to more normal levels to start out
December.

Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Rest of the Overnight: High confidence.

VFR. WSW-SW winds 5-10 kt.

Today: High confidence in trends, moderate on the exact timing.

VFR but with lowering ceiling trends thru about 18z. Anticipate
onset of MVFR around 19-00z west to east, with IFR western
airports after 21z. Mainly 5-6 SM visby rain and mist 21-00z for
most, but period of moderate intensity rain in same time frame
for BAF-BDL. SW winds become S around 8-12 kt, with low-20s kt
gusts for southeast New England airports.

Tonight: High confidence in trends, moderate on the exact
timing.

IFR to LIFR ceilings develop early in the tonight TAF period
with band of light to moderate intensity rains at 2-5 SM visby.
Rain ends from west to east 03-07z but could linger a little
longer across Cape Cod airports and Nantucket. Ceilings improve
by about one category to MVFR-IFR levels thru rest of the overnight.

Winds S to SW 10-15 kt, up to 20 kt for the Cape and Islands.
While gusts for most eastern airports and PVD in the 23-28 kt
range, strong SSW gusts up to 35 kt mainly for the Cape and
Islands.

Monday: High confidence.

MVFR to VFR ceilings as cold front races SE through Southern New
England ~15-21z. Frontal passage will bring a more rapid
improvement to VFR but winds to shift from WSW to NW around
10-15 kt with gusts to 25 kt.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Splashover or minor coastal flooding is possible Sunday into
Sunday evening associated with a frontal system. A Coastal Flood
Advisory is in effect for Nantucket and Cape Cod, while a
Coastal Flood Statement is in effect for the northern shores of
Eastern Massachusetts.

Astro tides remain elevated Sunday, but timing of the strongest
winds will be delayed beyond the higher afternoon high tide.
This will help to minimize impacts from what looks to be a 1.5
to 2 ft surge per Stevens Institute for the southern coastal
waters. There is potential that headlines may need to be
expanded into Sunday night for some locations along the south
coast, like Narraganset Bay.

May be some splashover or very minor flooding across eastern MA
around or just after the Sunday early afternoon tide (11.40 ft
MLLW at Boston Harbor), but winds and surge don't look
significant. While winds increase Sunday evening, the evening
high tide looks lower (9.57 ft MLLW), and may not be as much of
a concern by then.
