.SYNOPSIS...

Another cold night tonight then high pressure building to our south
on Wednesday brings lighter winds and moderating temperatures as
morning sunshine giving way to afternoon clouds. A warm front
brings milder conditions Thursday but accompanied by showers and
windy conditions. Heavy showers possible Thursday night into
early Friday morning, then a drying trend Friday afternoon
behind a frontal passage, along with mild temperatures
lingering. Trending mainly dry next weekend, with Saturday the
cooler of the two days.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...

935 PM Update...

Previous forecast is pretty much on track. Quite the chilly
airmass remains across southern New England this evening, but it
has modified some over the past 24 hours. Wind gusts have
diminished some from earlier in the day, but there still was a
decent northwest breeze given a modest LLJ. This has kept
temperatures mainly in the lower to middle 30s this evening.
Winds should slacken a bit more after midnight as the high
pressure ridge axis approaches from the west. However, winds
probably still do not decouple in most locations. This will keep
overnight low temps mainly in the upper teens to the middle
20s. Perhaps the normally lowest lying valley locations may
decouple for a few hours before sunrise; allowing a few of the
normally coldest spots to dip into the middle teens. Regardless,
low temperatures should average about 10 to 15 degrees below
normal of this time of year.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...

Wednesday...

Leftover gusty NW winds near the coast will diminish as high pres
moves off the mid Atlc coast and passes south of New Eng. NW winds
will turn to WSW in the afternoon which will bring a milder airmass
into SNE in developing warm advection pattern. 925 mb temps start
out around -8C at 12z but warm to around 1C by late in the day. This
will allow temps to reach the upper 40s across much of the region.
With relatively light winds in the afternoon it will feel much more
comfortable.

Expect lots of sunshine to start the day, then clouds will increase
in the afternoon as warm front aloft moves into the region. There is
a low risk for a few brief light rain or sleet showers across
interior MA late in the day, although low level dry air and lack of
forcing under the upper ridge will limit areal coverage.

Wednesday night...

A few lingering light rain to sleet showers possible early in
northern MA as the 850 mb warm front lifts across the region, then a
dry slot moves in which will result in a mainly dry period through
at least midnight. A modest low level jet develops overnight which
brings increasing PWATs with the potential for a few rain showers
late. Low level moisture is abundant with drier air aloft so some
drizzle is also possible. Low temps will be achieved in the evening
with readings in the low/mid 30s, then temps rising into the upper
30s to mid 40s toward daybreak.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

Highlights...

* Mild for Thursday as a warm front brings isolated showers during
  the day. Cold front arrives late Thursday with embedded heavy
  downpours and a few rumbles of thunder.

* An isolated shower possible Friday, otherwise drying trend
  continues along with slightly above normal maximum temperatures.

* First half of the weekend is dry and sunny, but we could see a few
  showers on Sunday.

Thursday:

Warm front lifts across southern New England early Thursday which
ushers in a moisture rich and mild air mass. Forecast soundings on
BUFKIT show high values of low level moisture with a dry pocket in
the mid levels. PWATs are anonymously high, reaching 200 to 300
percent of normal, which is 1.0 to 1.3 inches. With RH values
approaching saturation at 925mb we expect fairly low stratus clouds
for much of the day. Looking at the guidance for Thursday, ceiling
heights are roughly  around 1,000 feet. While it doesn't look like a
washout, there is some confidence in areas of drizzle because of the
low status setup. The better chance for appreciable rainfall comes
Thursday evening as the cold front pushes from west to east. SPC has
much of southern New England under generally thunder for Thursday.
There isn't much surface based CAPE, but there is some elevated
instability. Thinking the best chance for a couple of rumbles of
thunder would be from Rhode Island into southeastern Massachusetts.

The 925mb temperatures climb into the low to mid teens, given the
cloud cover temperatures away from the coast reach the low 60s and
upper 50s at the coast. If there are more breaks in the clouds the
afternoon temperatures could reach the mid 60s. Dewpoints reach the
mid 50s to boot, which will give the air a slight muggy feel.

Winds could be blustery as well, the LLJ at 925mb is screaming out
of the southwest around 60 to 70 knots. BUFKIT soundings show an
inversion at the surface which would inhibit those winds from mixing
down. Never the less, periods of gusts 20 to 30 knots are possible.

Friday:

Cold front moves off shore early Friday morning. Lingering low level
moisture and the passage of a robust mid level trough could bring
about an isolated shower or two. PWATs are generally 0.3 to 0.5
inches and those values diminish as drier air moves in throughout
the day, don't expect any washouts. Temperatures will be realized
around noon or two-o-clock in the afternoon then slowly cool off
with CAA arriving from the northwest. Maximum temperatures should
reach the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. There could be some
enhanced downsloping given the wind direction for the metro west of
Boston where it's possible to see highs around 62F to 64F. Clearing
skies overnight and northwest flow will allow temperatures to fall
to seasonable lows in the low and middle 30s. Elevated locations in
northwestern Massachusetts could reach the mid to upper 20s.

This weekend:

Surface high pressure noses in from the southwest for Saturday with
low RH values from the surface to 500mb. BUFKIT soundings show deep
mixing to 850mb. Temperatures aloft are running -5C to -3C which
would support highs in the low and mid 50s. This is on par with the
normal highs for late March in southern New England.

Sunday a VORT MAX passes moves across southern New England, more
than anything helps to fill the clouds back in. Confidence remains
low, but an few showers are possible. Temperatures once again are
seasonable in the low and mid 50s.

Next week:

The upper level pattern is pretty zonal Monday and Tuesday with weak
high pressure over the northeast before breaking down by mid next
week. Temperatures remain seasonable with daily highs in the mid 50s
and overnight lows in the mid 30s to low 40s.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...

Low - less than 30 percent.

06z TAF Update...

Today...High Confidence. VFR despite an increase in some
mid/high level cloudiness as the day wears along. WNW winds of 5
to 15 knots shift to the SW at the same speeds by late
afternoon.

Tonight...Moderate Confidence. VFR this evening, but MVFR-IFR
conditions in some low clouds and fog will overspread much of
the region between 08z and 12z from southwest to northeast.
Mainly dry weather expected, but a few spot showers possible
mainly toward daybreak. Light SSW winds, but do expect LLWS to
develop towards daybreak with the development of a modest LLJ.

Thursday...Moderate Confidence. MVFR-IFR conditions dominate
through the day. Much of this time will feature dry weather, but
a few showers are possible at times especially by late in the
day. SW winds gusts increase to between 20 and 25 knots with a
few gusts around 30 knots are expected.
