.SYNOPSIS...
A strong storm will impact the region through this morning,
with snow over the high terrain of western and central MA, and
rain elsewhere. Strong to damaging winds along the coast as
well as coastal flooding are expected. Blustery and cold
weather returns Tuesday followed by milder air Wednesday. A weak
frontal system moves through the region Wednesday night
followed by colder weather Thursday and Friday. Another weather
system may affect Southern New England Saturday, or it may pass
to our south. Low confidence in the weekend forecast at this
time.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
10 AM Update...
The heaviest rain has lifted north of southern New England as
of 10 AM but decently widespread showers continue for the next
two hours or so. That being said, drier mid level air is quickly
approaching, as evidenced by breaks in the clouds just to our
south. These breaks of sun should move into the south coast in
the next hour, though clouds will thicken up again later today
as moisture is wrapped back in from the west. While we've passed
the peak of the winds for today, they will continue to be gusty
this afternoon and evening.
Winter Storm Warning continues in the Berkshires but is
cancelled for the Worcester hills. Coastal Flood headlines will
be in effect mid morning to midday. Overall, the forecast is on
target at this time.
Previous Discussion...
As expected, the quick burst of snow has mixed with or changed
over to rain across much of MA coastal plains east of I-95
corridor thanks to the strong WAA from the strong easterly low-
level jet. At the same time, an impressive mesoscale band with
embedded 50+ dBZ reflectivity is lifting northwards into
Connecticut. While this is associated with the bright banding
from the CC product (i.e. mixing with non-snow p-type), further
north where temps are still well below freezing. Combined with
the 70-80 kt 925mb low level jet nosing into southeastern New
England in the next couple of hours, expect localized 1-2 inches
per hour snowfall rate for the east-facing slopes of the
Berkshires and northern Worcester Hills. These are also where
Winter Storm Warnings have been hoisted and shall remain for
this forecast package.
Also keeping a close eye on a line of severe-warned storms
along the Jersey shore and south of NYC. With this
line of storms forecast to reach the south coast a little after 4
AM, expect strong to potentially damaging winds up to 70 mph to mix
down to the surface between 5 to 9 AM across coastal MA and RI.
Don't be surprised to hear a rumble of thunder or two with this
dynamic setup. Brief heavy downpours could also lead to localized
urban poor drainage ponding or very minor flooding.
All headlines have remained the same for this forecast package.
Cold front then comes through later this afternoon, switching
the wind direction to the west. Cold pool moving overhead could
also lead to some scattered snow showers across the interior but
the impactful weather would have been long gone.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM TUESDAY/...
By tonight most of the precipitation is well removed from
southern New England, save for western MA where orographically
enhanced light snow showers may continue overnight under west
winds. Gusty winds will be the most notable weather overnight,
coinciding with a drop in temperatures. A cold advection pattern
promotes efficient mixing of a potent low level jet, keeping
winds gusty overnight between 25 to 35 mph.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Big Picture...
Shortwave trough over New England Tuesday moves off through the
Maritimes. A modest shortwave ridge moves overhead Wednesday.
Another shortwave trough digs south from Central Canada to the Great
Lakes Thursday, then sweeps east Friday and Saturday. This suggests
a weak cold front moving through Wednesday night, and a second
weather system either affecting Srn New England Saturday or passing
well to the south.
Upper contours remain at seasonable levels for January, although
signs of much colder temperatures by Sunday.
The model mass fields are similar through much of the forecast
period. There are noticeable differences in handling the system from
Central Canada and the Midwest. Confidence is moderate-high midweek,
but low for Friday night and Saturday.

Tuesday...
Surface low pressure moves off through Newfoundland. Pressure
gradient between that low and a high pressure area over the Midwest
will support strong northwest winds, and with cold advection through
the lower layers we expect winds of up to 35 kt/40 mph to be mixed
to the surface in gusts. Temperatures at 925-mb will be around -10C,
which would support surface max temps of 25 to 30, possibly low 30s
on the south coast.
High pressure approaches late in the day, then moves overhead
Tuesday night. This will support light wind, with clear skies the
first half of the night. A warm front then approaches through NY
State on the second half of the night. Expect increasing mid and
high clouds after midnight. Min temps should be in the single
numbers north and teens south.
Wednesday through Friday...
Low pressure passes north of the Great Lakes and crosses Quebec.
This pushes a warm front through Srn New England Wednesday. As the
low passes to our north, it will swing a cold front south across the
region. Southwest upper jet draws a plume of moisture up across
Srn New England, with sufficient lift to create a few rain/snow
showers Wednesday night along and ahead of the cold front. The
showers linger Thursday morning in SE Mass, but should move
offshore by midday. High pressure moves east from the Great
Lakes, bringing clearing skies late Thursday...and colder air
Thursday night and Friday.
Winds turn from the north behind the cold front Thursday and Friday.
Speeds are expected at 14-16 kt. Low-level temperatures cool to near
minus 13C, while water temps over Massachusetts Bay will be in the
mid 40s F, or 7-8C. Lake indices are conditional Thursday afternoon
and Moderate Friday. Will expect ocean-effect snow showers
during this time, especially on Friday. The fetch favors the
Outer Cape, and could extend to HYA.
Warm sector temperatures Wednesday will bring highs 35 to 45.
Temperatures then cool to the 20s and lower 30s at night.
Temperatures will continue to trend cooler through Friday, with
daytime values by that time in the teens northwest to 20s southeast.
Nighttime temps should reach the single numbers, with teens on the
Cape and Islands.
Saturday-Sunday...
Models continue to show the same players but different solutions for
the weekend weather. The GFS shows high pressure camped over the
Northeast and Great Lakes with plenty of chilly air, while a
shortwave with progressive axis moves through from the Midwest. The
ECMWF shows the high pressure shifted east over the Maritimes,
leaving room for the flow to shift farther north. The shortwave has
more of a neutral axis with upper flow directed toward New England
rather than out to sea. As a consequence of this, the GFS shows the
associated surface system remaining well south of the 40N/70W
benchmark, while the ECMWF brings the surface system close to the
benchmark with snow and strong north to northeast winds over the
Cape/Islands/South Coast. Will maintain a forecast keeping the the
precipitation to our south, but with continued low confidence.

eastern MA coast. This combined with seas up to 25 ft just offshore
will result in widespread minor to moderate coastal flooding. The
greatest risk of moderate flooding is along the north shore,
especially Cape Ann and Plum Island as peak of wind/surge likely to
coincide with high tide for these locations. Surges are expected to
be a bit lower near Cape/Islands where minor flooding is expected.
Along the south coast, a storm surge of 3 ft is likely with up to a
4 ft surge at PVD, but the timing of the peak surge may occur just
after high tide. Still, we expect areas of minor coastal flooding
along the south coast and Narragansett Bay during the high tide.
Storm surge values for this forecast were derived from a blend of
ESTOFS/ETSS and Stevens Institute ensemble storm surge guidance.
Again, forecast confidence for moderate coastal flooding is greatest

of Windham, eastern Tolland, Norfolk, Essex, Middlesex, south
central Nantucket, central Dukes, Barnstable, Bristol, Suffolk,
Worcester, eastern Hampden, Plymouth, northeastern Newport, northern
Bristol, northwestern Washington, Kent and Providence Counties
through 700 AM EST...
At 527 AM EST, Doppler radar was tracking a line of heavy downpours
along a line extending from near Eastford to 28 miles southeast of
Chilmark. Movement was north at 55 mph.
HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph.
SOURCE...Radar indicated.
IMPACT...Strong winds could cause minor damage such as downed
branches. Heavy downpours could lead to localized urban
poor drainage ponding or minor flooding.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Portions of north-central Massachusetts may
still be experiencing wintry precipitation.
