.SYNOPSIS...
Dangerous cold across southern New England today as arctic air
invades. Ocean effect snow showers anticipated to bring
accumulating snow to central and eastern portions of the Cape.
Another cold night across southern New England tonight, but a
warm up is on the way Wednesday. Gusty southwest flow moderates
temperatures to near normal readings. Two potential coastal
lows pass to our east Friday and Monday. They will bring a
chance of snow for southern and eastern parts of Srn New
England.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

12:30 Update...

Snow has been reported in Provincetown and based on webcams
there is minor accumulations on roadways and hard surfaces.
Ocean effect snow looks to be spreading south; flurries and
light accumulations may make it all the way to Chatham.
Otherwise, temperatures are holding steady between about 5 and
15F, as the coldest 925mb temps of this cold snap are centered
over New England at this hour. As high pressure nestles in this
afternoon, winds will lose their gustiness, bringing calmer
conditions to the area this afternoon. Wind chills are
approaching -15C across northern MA.

1015 Update...

Snow showers that dropped a quick 0.5-1 inch of snow ahead of
and along the arctic front have pushed well south of our area,
leaving clear and cold conditions in their wake. Gusty winds, up
to 36 kt have been observed over the the outer Cape and Coastal
waters this morning. Gusts appear to be hanging on a bit longer
than originally forecast, so their duration was extended a few
more hours.

Given NW flow advecting arctic air over the ocean, ocean effect
snow has developed northeast of Cape Cod. These showers may
brush the outer Cape, but given dew points at or below zero,
most flakes will sublimate before hitting the surface. The best
chance to see flakes flying this morning and early afternoon
will be from Chatham to Provincetown. Given reported snow to
liquid ratios of 30:1 this from this morning's snow showers, it
is not out of the question that light precipitation across the
outer Cape will generate a quick half an inch of snow. The rest
of the region can anticipate blue skies for the entirety of
Tuesday.

Freezing spray remains a threat for Cape Cod Bay and the
Nantucket sound until gusts die back this afternoon and evening.

715 AM Update

No significant changes to the forecast.

Snow showers at 7 AM were along Cape Cod and parts of the South
Coast. Elsewhere skies were mostly clear. Winds were from the
north-northwest with gusts 15 to 20 kt.

Expect the remaining snow showers will move offshore this
morning. Otherwise mostly clear with temperatures in the single
numbers and teens. Expect temperatures to change very little,
with gusty winds through the morning before diminishing.

Highlights

* Dangerous cold across parts of southern New England today.

* Ocean effect snow showers across central/eastern Cape Cod.

A trough will be located nearby/just offshore of southern New
England this morning. The trough will lift into Nova Scotia/further
offshore by this afternoon. A ridge builds into the central/eastern
Great Lakes behind the exiting trough. High pressure nudges into the
region from the OH Valley/eastern Great Lakes.

Arctic air in place across southern New England today. Will have 925
hPa temperatures in the -10 to -25 degree range. Given the colder
air advecting in and 925 hPa speeds of 20-25 kts, should see gusts
in this range during the morning as mixing should be excellent per
RAP/NAM/GFS BUFKIT soundings. Think this will lead to some downslope
warming across parts of the region, so bumped up highs toward the
50th percentile of guidance. May actually need to bump things up
further given we should have plenty of sunshine and strong mixing.
This yields daytime highs in the single digits above zero for the
higher terrain and low/mid teens elsewhere. The only exception is
the Cape/Islands where temps warm into the mid/upper teens. Luckily
the gusty winds should diminish by the afternoon as high pressure
nudges in relaxing the pressure gradient. However, do have dangerous
cold to deal with especially during the morning timeframe where
there will be fairly widespread wind chill values ranging from the
single digits below zero to around 20 below zero. These coldest
values will be found across the eastern slopes of the Berkshires,
northern Worcester and northern Middlesex counties where a Wind
Chill Advisory remains in effect.

On top of the dangerous cold will have the opportunity for ocean
effect snow showers across central and especially eastern portions
of the Cape. Risk is greatest during the morning due to conducive
flow and moisture is still available in the lowest 1000-850 hPa
range. Though there may be enough moisture for snow showers to
continue across the far Outer Cape into the afternoon. Lastly, did
bump up the snow ratios as the NBM is not representative in this
arctic airmass. Right now have up to an inch of accumulation across
the Outer Cape, but if we can get a bit more QPF it is not out of
the question that we see some 2 inch totals per the WPC
Superensemble plumes.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Highlights

* Arctic cold continues into Wednesday morning, but winds will be
  light as high pressure moves through.

* Dry warm front lifts through southern New England early on
  Wednesday. Temperatures moderate to near/above normal, but will be
  gusty at times.

Tuesday night...

Ridge axis builds New England Tuesday night and into Nova
Scotia/offshore by early Wednesday, while a shortwave trough lifts
into the eastern Great Lakes/northern New England by early
Wednesday. High pressure builds into southern New England during the
evening and offshore by early Wednesday morning. A dry warm front
lifts into southern New England.

Dry and quiet weather expected with high pressure in control. Does
appear that there will be decent radiational cooling during the
evening until that shortwave lifts in bringing mid/high clouds. In
addition will see the cooling offset a bit as flow becomes
southwesterly late. This will advect in warmer -8 to -10 degree
Celsius air at 925 hPa as the warm front lifts through. Will be bone
dry in the lower levels, so not anticipating any precip. If these
clouds take a bit longer to move in then temps will need to be
decreased further. Overnight lows actually colder than this morning
with readings in the single digits above zero for most other than
the Cape/Islands where readings in the low/mid teens. The only
difference from this morning is that there is little to no wind, so
will not be close to Wind Chill Advisory criteria with values
bottoming out in the single digits below zero.

Wednesday...

A series of shortwave troughs lift across Ontario into
Quebec/northern New England. Southern New England remains between
the high building well offshore and a low deepening across southern
Quebec.

Dry and quiet weather expected across southern New England with
temperatures moderating to near/above normal for this time of year.
Will have strong southwesterly flow advect in -4 to 0 degree Celsius
air at 925 hPa. Should see fairly strong southwesterly low level jet
develop over the region due to the deepening low off to the NW and
high remains offshore to the SE. Most guidance shows a 30-50+ kt low
level jet moving across the region at 850 hPa. Per NAM/GFS BUFKIT
soundings should see a good portion of this mix down. Anticipating
it to be gusty throughout the day with gusts in the 30-35 mph range
for most with the highest gusts over the Cape/Islands into the
afternoon. Luckily, the low level jet moves through fairly quickly.
Given the strong mixing temps will rebound nicely. Will see readings
range from the 30s across the interior to the upper 30s to mid 40s
along the Coastal Plain.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Big Picture...

Low pressure sits over Hudsons Bay and Nrn Quebec for much of the
period, moving out Monday as another low dives south from far
Northern Canada. This means cyclonic flow in the Northeast USA while
a series of ridges move through the Northwest.  A series of
shortwaves moves through this flow, with the more significant ones
moving past Srn New England on Friday and Monday. GFS/ECMWF/GGEM
suggest the Friday system is mostly offshore, with one model...the
ECMWF...showing Cape/Islands/SE Mass getting clipped by light
precip. Less agreement on the Monday weather system, with the GFS
giving all of Southern New England a direct hit while the other
models show at best a graze on the Cape/Islands as the system moves
past.

With a persistent upper trough over the Northeast USA, expect
temps near normal at best with periods of below normal
temperatures.

Progressive shortwaves through an unblocked flow suggest brief
systems with limited precipitation. The GFS solution for the Monday
system includes building high pressure over the Atlantic Ocean,
which could slow that system. But the variety of other storm tracks,
some farther out to sea, leads to great uncertainty in the movement
of that system. The fact it is a Day 7 forecast doesn't help. This
system will bear watching, but watch it with a grain of salt.

Details...

Wednesday night and Thursday...

Cold front will be stall over Northern New England with a couple of
low pressure waves moving along the front. This should keep
precipitation over the North Country while Southern New England
remains dry. The arctic airmass will retreat, with dew points
climbing into the upper teens and 20s. This will keep min temps less
cold than tonight, in the 20s and lower 30s.

Dry weather continues Thursday as weak high pressure moves through.
Model soundings show mid and high level moisture, so expect some
clouds. Low level temperatures near 40 suggest max sfc temps in the
upper 30s to mid 40s.

Friday...

Shortwave moves through the northern stream trough, creating surface
low pressure off the Carolinas. General agreement that this surface
low swings wide of Srn New England and the benchmark, heading toward
Nova Scotia. If this track maintains, most of the precipitation will
remain offshore. However, scattered or widely scattered snow showers
may reach parts of RI and Eastern MA. Snow amounts should be light
with temperatures in the mid 20s northwest to the 30s east.

North-Northwest winds then increase Friday night as the pressure
gradient increases. Expect strong gusty winds drawing another period
of chilling air into Srn New England. Temperatures should fall into
the single numbers inland and teens on the Cape and Islands.

Saturday through Monday...

Weak high pressure brings more dry weather for Saturday. Another
weather system sweeps through the southern stream, developing a
surface low pressure over the Southeast USA. Dueling solutions among
the models with the GFS showing a storm track over the benchmark
that brings a chance of snow later Sunday and Monday. Meanwhile the
others are more to the southeast with most precipitation out to sea.
The offshore track keeps colder air over Srn New England, so will
forecast a chance of snow of southern/eastern parts of the region.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Today...High confidence

VFR for all locations except for the central/eastern outer Cape.
Could have some MVFR conditions across central/eastern outer
Cape due to ocean effect snow showers. Should see this activity
diminishing as the day progresses as drier air advects in. Winds
remain out of the NW at 10-20 kts with gusts of 20-30 kts
during the morning. The pressure gradient relaxes by the
afternoon diminishing the winds/gusts and shifts winds to more
of a WNW/W direction by late around 5-10 kts.

Tonight...High confidence

High pressure nudges in early this evening, as gustiness
diminishes overnight. Winds will gradually shift from the NW to
SW by sunrise. Winds will be light, 5-10 kts. Winds pick up
slightly before sunrise, with gusts 10-20 kt possible. VFR
through the period for interior locations. Hyannis and Nantucket
may hold on the MVFR conditions early this evening as ocean
effect snow showers overspread the outer Cape and Islands. MVFR
will become VFR overnight.

Wednesday...High confidence

VFR again on Wednesday, with the exception once again being
the Cape and Islands. Much stronger SW winds develop mid morning
with sustained SW 15-25kt gusts up to 35 kt possible Wednesday
afternoon.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF. VFR overnight. NW winds
die back overnight, becoming light and from the SW. SW winds
pick up after about 15Z Wednesday, bringing gusts as high at
30kt to the terminal Wednesday afternoon.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF. VFR overnight. NW winds
become light and switch to the SW overnight. SW winds increase
Wednesday morning, 10-20 kt, with gusts to 25 kt possible.

morning diminishes to 15-20 kts by late afternoon. Seas fall
below 5 ft by this evening. Have made adjustments to the ending
time of the Small Craft Advisory across interior waters as
seas/winds fall below the limits by late afternoon/early
evening.

High pressure builds into and through the waters. This shifts
winds from a NW direction eventually to the W and SW toward
daybreak. Will see the SW winds increase to around 15-20 kts
with gusts of 25-30 kts toward daybreak. Seas remain less than 4
ft.

Wednesday...Moderate confidence

Have hoisted a Gale Watch across all waters on Wednesday into
Wednesday evening. Should see a strong southwesterly low level
jet in place over the region. There are some questions in how
much of this jet mixes down, but think we get to the 30-35 kt
range for most spots. Seas build to 4-10 ft. Highest seas across
the southern and eastern outer waters.
