.SYNOPSIS...
Persistent low pressure over the Maritimes circulates dry, cold and
blustery weather into New England Sunday through Tuesday. High
pressure then settles over New England Wednesday, with diminishing
winds and not as cold. A storm system then impacts New England
Thursday and Friday, with potentially strong winds and likely more
rain than snow/ice, especially for the I-95 corridor. Then trending
drier and colder to start next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

125 PM Update...

Highlights...

* Dry weather with some clouds and peeks of sun will continue
  through the afternoon with temps in the upper 30s/lower 40s

Details...

An abundance of mid/high level cloudiness were in place across
the region early this afternoon but peeks of sunshine were mixed
in too. This was in association with a moisture starved
shortwave. Current temps ranged from the middle 30s in the high
terrain...to the upper 30s and lower 40s elsewhere. These temps
should pretty much remain steady for the next couple hours.

Mainly dry weather should prevail given lack of low level
forcing/dynamics. Nonetheless...a few snow showers/flurries may
develop along the east slopes of the Berks late today with
westerly flow and remnant Lake Effect moisture.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...

Highlights

* Dry and quiet weather, but breezy at times with seasonable
  temperatures.

Cutoff low over eastern Ontario/western Quebec lifts into Nova
Scotia tonight. A piece of energy/vorticity remains over western
Quebec, but will get slingshot into southern New England on Monday.
The ridge over the Southern Plains builds into the Mid/Upper
Mississippi River Valley late tonight. The ridge builds into the
central Great Lakes by late Monday. Will be stuck between high
pressure over the TN Valley tonight and a low near Nova Scotia. The
high builds into the OH Valley/eastern Great Lakes on Monday.

Dry and quiet weather expected through this period. The only
exception is across parts of western MA where there could be
leftover lake effect snow showers moving in tonight. Not completely
out of the question there could be up to an inch of new snow in far
northwestern MA.

As that vort max/shortwave is swinging in/through will have 850 hPa
winds increasing to 25-40 kts out of the NW. This on top of the
tightened pressure gradient will make it breezy at times especially
on Monday. Could see some 25-35 mph gusts at times with the highest
speeds across the Cape/Islands. Temperatures aloft will be in the -7
to -11 degree Celsius range. Expect downsloping to bring temps to
more seasonable readings on Monday. Highs range from the 30s across
the interior to the low/mid 40s along the coastal plain.

the area Tue night, providing cold temps given light winds, clear
conditions and a dry airmass. Thus, derived min temps here from the
colder MOS guid.

Wednesday...

Ensembles have 1030+ mb high over the area, providing dry weather
and light winds. Very pleasant December weather, with lots of
sunshine and seasonably cool temps, as highs climb into the upper
30s and lower 40s. Wed probably the pick of the workweek!

Thursday/Friday...

* Potential strong winds & heavy rain late Thu into Fri

Ensembles and deterministic guidance continue to advertise a very
high amplitude pattern, with a full latitude trough evolving over
the eastern Great Lakes/OH Valley. The question becomes how far
southeast does this mid/upper level trough dig? The GFS/GEFS is
farther southeast than the EC/ECENS. Therefore GFS/GEFS holds onto
shallow cold air a bit longer on the front end, offering a higher
prob than the EC/ECENS for mixed precip and/or ice over northwest MA
at the onset. Not out of the question given 1040 mb high over
southeast Quebec supporting CAD. Otherwise, with mid level low
likely tracking west of New England, more rain than snow/ice is
likely, especially for the I-95 corridor. Regarding wind
potential...both ensembles and deterministic guidance have a strong
wind signal, with low level (925 mb) southerly jet 65-75 kt late Thu
ngt into Fri. Both ensembles have high probs of 2m temps 50+F.
Deterministic has 2m temps in the mid 50s, thus enhancing wind
threat.  Strong jet dynamics result in PWAT plume of +2 sigma
advecting across SNE. As a result, both ensembles offering fairly
high probs for 1+ inch qpf and low probs of 2+ inches. Impressive
for this time range, although supportive by the high amplitude
pattern.

Also, we will have to watch potential coastal
flooding/inundation, as astronomical tides are very high. Would
only take about a 1 ft storm surge for many sites to approach
flooding stage, plus wave action on top of the surge,
increasing the risk for splash over and minor inundation.
