Mainly dry and cold weather prevails through the middle of the week.
Confidence is increasing in an impactful storm Thursday night into
Friday. Odds are favoring more rain than snow along the coastal
plain with better snow potential for interior high elevations.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...

1 AM Update...

Forecast remains on track. No changes in the latest update.

10 PM Update...

Temps falling just a bit quicker than previous forecast
indicated as boundary layer has decoupled across the interior.
Due to this have lowered temps to the 15th percentile of
guidance, but may need to lower further in future updates. The
result will be some single digit readings across the higher
terrain. Elsewhere temps will mostly be in the teens. Should
stay a bit milder along the coastal plain as the pressure
gradient is still keeping winds up a bit. Have kept temps up in
these areas with the previous forecast. Rest of the forecast
looks good at this point.

Forecast remains on track at this hour an no changes are needed
in the near-term. See previous discussion for details on
tonight's forecast.

Previous Discussion

Quiet weather continues for the rest of the day and through the
overnight hours as high pressure builds from the west and the
pressure gradient relaxes. This allows winds to diminish, even
if the boundary layer may not completely decouple. Thus, winds
are not expected to become completely calm overnight, so opted
not to go with straight MOS guidance but with a MOS/NBM mix to
account for some radiational cooling. This will put lows in the
teens across the region, save for the immediate coasts which
stay in the mid 20s.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...

Tuesday we're in for more dry weather and plenty of sun under a very
dry airmass (dewpoints in the teens) and brisk NW flow. This as the
surface low currently off the coast of Cape Cod circles back and
retrogrades from the Canadian maritimes to just off the eastern MA
coast by Wednesday. So while much of Tuesday will be quiet, Tuesday
night winds begin to ramp up as the pressure gradient tightens ahead
of the approaching system. This will bring increasingly gusty winds,
especially over the waters and immediate coastal zones. A Gale Watch
is in effect for eastern waters for potential of gusts near 34 kts
late Tuesday into Wednesday. Temperature-wise we'll get a small
moderation in surface temps ahead of the system, so highs should be
warmer than today, in the upper 30s and low 40s. The only
precipitation to note will be the chance for some ocean effect snow
showers to brush the outer Cape overnight as a mostly dry dry cold
front moves through, associated with that passing low pressure.

Highlights

Wednesday and Thursday

Wednesday will feature dry but windy conditions as southern New
England will be caught between a geopotential height ridge building
in from the west and a low-pressure system meandering off the
northeast coast. This pattern will support a dry northwest flow and
thus a dry/sunny day for most of southern New England on Wednesday
afternoon. The exception will be for the outer Cape where ocean
effect clouds and perhaps some ocean effect showers will move
overhead. The tight pressure gradient between the western high and
eastern low will support wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph during the
afternoon Wednesday. Temperatures will be seasonable, so overall a
dry but blustery day.

As high pressure continues to build in from the west on Thursday, an
onshore flow will develop at the surface. This will support
increasing moisture and cloud cover on Thursday ahead of a low-
pressure system advancing from the south along the east coast. Warm
frontal precipitation associated with this system may begin to
overspread portions of southern New England as early as mid-
afternoon Thursday. There remains uncertainty with respect to the
time of arrival of this system so for now, expect cloudy skies and
near normal temperatures on Thursday.

Thursday night through Saturday

An area of low-pressure will develop off the mid-Atlantic coast on
Thursday and move up the eastern sea board Thursday night into
Friday. Latest deterministic and ensemble model guidance are in
agreement that southern New England will see substantial
precipitation with this system mainly Friday morning through Friday
night. However, precipitation may begin as early as Thursday
afternoon ahead of the associated warm front. There is greater
agreement among guidance that precipitation will begin during the
early morning hours of Friday.

The greatest forecast challenge with this system will be determining
where the rain/snow line sets up. There is increasing confidence
that this storm will have a more inland track and be more supportive
of snowfall across the interior high terrain of southern New
England. For eastern MA and RI, ensemble guidance has been trending
toward a mostly rain event. CIPS analogs, which compare the forecast
to similar historical events, reveal that advisory level snow fall
has been reached in 80 percent of the 15 most similar events across
the areas north and west of the I-495 corridor. A weaker signal can
be observed in the GEFS/EPS ensemble models which currently give
about a 30 to 60 percent chance of snowfall greater than 3 inches
over The Berkshires and the high terrain of The Worcester Hills.
Therefore it appears at this time that the greatest threat for
significant snowfall would be toward the areas further to the north
and west. Nonetheless, we'll be keeping a close eye on this system
this week to monitor the potential for any impacts to southern New
England. In addition to the rain and snow, models are hinting at the
potential for respectable wind gusts with this system, mainly for
southeastern MA and The Cape/Islands where 40 mph wind gusts are not
out of the question at this point in time.

Latest trends have suggested that this system would be departing the
region sometime early Saturday leaving us with seasonable
temperatures and west/northwesterly winds for the first half the
weekend.

Sunday and Monday

Late weekend/early next week is looking to be dry and seasonable as
high pressure builds in behind the departing low.

VFR with clear skies. Winds generally less than 10 kts out of
the NW/N. The only exception is across the Cape/Islands and
higher terrain where winds are around 10-15 kts.

VFR with winds out of the NW/WNW at 5-10 kts with gusts of 15-20
kts.

Tonight...High confidence.

VFR with NW/WNW winds increasing to 10-20 kts. Will see gusts
increasing to 25-35 kts after 06Z. Could see some brief MVFR
ceilings across the Cape and perhaps ACK with a few snow showers
spreading in late.

Wednesday...High confidence.

VFR with NW to NNW winds at 15-25 kts. Could see gusts of 25 to
40 kts, with the highest gusts across the Cape/Islands. Could
see some rain showers spread into the Cape late in the day.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence.

Small craft advisory conditions will prevail through Tue, with
potential for Gale conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday.
North winds diminish to 10-15 kt later tonight into Tue.
However, NW winds will be increasing Tue afternoon and
especially by Tue evening. Rough sea conditions will persist
over the outer waters through the period. Seas of 7-10 ft this
evening will diminish to 6-8 ft overnight before rebounding
Tuesday evening.
