.SYNOPSIS...
Dry but remaining cold tonight. Sunday will feature a wintry mix
inland to rain, with all rain elsewhere along with breezy
conditions, as a weak low pressure passes by to our north. Behind
this system, a series of cold fronts will usher in bitterly cold air
for the first half of next week. The coldest air will arrive
Tuesday. Temperatures will moderate for the second half of next
week, although likely at or slightly colder than normal. The next
chance for widespread precipitation will arrive around Thu and again
Sat.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/...
Wind gusts have essentially ceased this afternoon as high pressure
moves overhead. Mesoanalysis shows the center of the high pressure
stretching from northern New York into Vermont. Thanks in part to
this incoming high pressure center, sunny skies abound across all of
southern New England; that is, however, except for the outer arm of
the Cape where ocean effect clouds have been more stubborn than
expected to move off and diminish. These will eventually come to an
end by late afternoon as winds shift and become lighter and the high
becomes centered overhead. This will also mean a decoupled boundary
layer (so, calm winds) and thus very efficient radiational cooling
thanks to lack of clouds. Temperatures will drop down into the
teens. This is 10 to 15 degrees below average for early January.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Sunday high pressure moves out and low pressure traverses southern
Canada with a shortwave trough moving into New England. This sets up
a warm advection pattern as flow at the surface becomes southwest,
sandwiched between the departing high and incoming low. This brings
an influx of moisture in the form of cloudcover and then a messy
round of mixed precipitation. The greatest concern with this system
will be the potential for some initial sleet, becoming an extended
period of freezing rain thanks to a warm nose aloft over subfreezing
temps at 925mb. While a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect
and we expect this to be an advisory level event, there is the
potential that this could be a high end Advisory event in the
highest elevations like the Berkshires. Guidance wants to hold on to
subfreezing surface temperatures (so, freezing rain) in the far
interior through mid to late afternoon which would be an extended
period of light icing with potential for up to a quarter inch or so
in the Berkshires; elsewhere a glaze to a tenth of an inch is
possible before switching to rain. Eventually temperatures warm
enough to switch to rain for the vast majority of the region before
a cold front drops through Sunday night and dries out the column.
One factor that may help keep ice amounts lower is the breezy winds
expected thanks to a 45 to 55 kt 925 mb low level jet that forms
overhead. However, we'll be dealing with a very potent warm
nose/inversion at 900 mb. BUFKIT soundings indicate the bulk of the
jet remains aloft but we will likely see gusts below Wind Advisory,
30 to 40 mph. Ice will accrete most efficiently in calm/light winds,
so this would only limit ice amounts. Winds will be higher over the
waters where winds may gust 45+ mph and Gale Warnings are in effect.
Rain/snow showers exit west to east Sunday night as the cold front
drops through and this ushers in a period of strong cold advection
which will eventually lead to the coldest temperatures of the season
so far.

Monday...
Post frontal and colder Monday, although true arctic air is delayed
until Tuesday. Nevertheless, colder than normal with highs in the
upper 20s and lower 30s, mid 20s high terrain. A modest west wind 10-
20 mph will make it feel a bit colder. Normal high is mid to upper
30s. Dry post frontal conditions should prevail.
Tuesday...
Arctic front barrels thru the region with frigid conditions, as 850
mb temps plummet to about -22C! Given this airmass leaned toward the
colder guidance, only supporting highs in the teens, with single
digits across much of northern MA. In addition, NNW winds 10-20 mph
(higher Cape Cod & Islands) will provide bitterly cold wind chills,
especially northwest MA where -15 to -20 wind chills are possible. A
wind chill advisory may be need for this region. Elsewhere, wind
chills from zero to minus 10 will be common Tue. Also, Monday night
into Tue morning, could see a few snow squall accompany the arctic
front. More widespread snow showers are possible Tue across the
outer Cape, where extreme low level instability will be realized
over the ocean, as delta-T between 850 temps (-22C) and SSTs (+7C)
approach 30C! Typically 20C delta is the onset for accumulating
snow. However, possible snow accums Tue will come down to
trajectory. If surface winds remain NW, bulk of accumulating snow
remains offshore. However, if more of a northerly flow develops,
accumulating snow will be possible for the outer Cape and possibly
into Plymouth county.
Wednesday through Saturday...
Long wave trough remains over the east, so below normal heights will
support temperatures not nearly as cold as Tue, but will average
this period at or slightly colder than normal. Also, with long wave
trough remaining over the eastern CONUS, there will be precip
chances around Thu and again Sat.
