.SYNOPSIS...

Cold and blustery conditions tonight, Friday and Friday night.
Milder and more seasonable weather will return this weekend into
early next week, then likely another cool down mid to late next
week. A few showers will be possible from time to time in the late
Sunday through Tuesday time frame, but not a washout with many hours
of dry weather expected.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...

The cold front has made its way through almost to the Cape Cod Canal
this afternoon, indicated by a shift to NW winds and 5-10 degree
drop in temperature. Instability has been even less impressive than
expected, with less than 500 J/kg save for the immediate south coast.
Lightning was much less prolific than this morning's round of
storms...better to our south over Long Island where instability is
stronger of course. The front should be offshore in the next 1 to 2
hours, along with any lingering storms.

Satellite imagery shows the clearing line in western MA which will
progress east, reaching Cape Cod by sunset. Blustery SW flow ahead
of the front becomes NW, funneling in much colder and drier air
(PWATS drop to near 1/2 inch and dewpoints down into the 30s!).
Winds will be gusty, 25 to 35 mph. Subzero 850 mb temps dip into
southern New England overnight, but strong winds will preclude the
boundary layer from decoupling and getting any good radiational
cooling, so lows should dip into the 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

On the back side of the trough strong northwest flow will make for a
significantly colder day, with highs not making it out of the upper
50s and low 60s. Cold air advection makes for a very well mixed
boundary layer up to near 925 mb, tapping into a 30-35 kt low level
jet. This will bring down winds of 15 to 20 kts, gusting as high as
30 kts. Over the outer Cape, islands, and marine zones gusts up to
35 kts or more are possible; for this reason a Gale Warning is in
effect for eastern waters Friday night into Saturday morning. No
precipitation to speak of except perhaps for these same waters
offshore of Cape cod where cold flow over the relatively warm water
will make for some ocean effect showers during the morning.

Friday night winds stay blustery as the high to our east pushes in,
tightening the pressure gradient between itself and Hurricane Fiona.
This will once again keep radiational cooling at bay, which should
help keep any frost headlines from being necessary. Lows dip into
the 40s for most, while high elevations of the interior may even see
their first upper 30s of the season.

Details...

This Weekend...

A chilly and blustery start to the weekend with 1020+ mb high west
of New England, but by Saturday afternoon temps will rebound to 65-
70, along with a diminishing wind. With dew pts in the 40s, there
will be noticeable difference sun vs shade. This dry airmass coupled
with ridge and light winds moving across the area Sat night, will
support another night of chilly temps, minus the wind. Lows should
dip into the 40s regionwide, except closer to 50 in the urban areas.
We sided with the cooler MOS guidance to derive mins Sat night.

Short wave ridging holds on to support dry weather at least the
first half of the day. Then by afternoon and especially Sunday
night, mid level flow becomes cyclonic across SNE, as northern
stream jet energy ejects eastward from the Great Lakes. Ensembles
show a marked increase in PWATs across SNE, along with deterministic
guidance showing deep mid level moisture streaming across SNE. This
combination of deep cyclonic flow and moisture will support a risk
for scattered showers from late Sunday, and especially Sunday night.
Overall, much of the daylight hours will be dry and pleasant, with
sunshine giving way to increasing afternoon clouds via WAA. 925 mb
temps warm to about +14C by 18z, and will support highs in the upper
60s to lower 70s. Right on track for late Sep. It may become a bit
breeze across RI and eastern MA, with SSW winds 15-25 mph, as low
level jet strengthens.

Next Week...

Long wave trough over the Great Lakes into New England, with
multiple short waves rotating through. Ensemble PWAT field indicates
the first short wave Monday likely has the most moisture. Thus
greatest chance for scattered showers maybe the first half of
Monday, then trending drier in the afternoon. Temps seasonable mild
Monday with highs 70-75.  Mild weather likely holds on into Tue
ahead of next short wave trough. Some uncertainty how much moisture
this trailing short wave will have, thus low confidence on risk of
showers late Tue/Tue night. Behind this short wave, turning cooler
and dry Wed/Thu.
