.SYNOPSIS...
Strengthening low pressure tracking south and east of Nantucket
will bring a period of heavy snow late tonight into Friday
morning. The snow tapers off during the afternoon followed by
blustery and colder weather late Friday and Friday night. Slow
moderation on Saturday precedes a wintry mix to rain for Sunday.
Turning much colder early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL MIDNIGHT TONIGHT/...

Quiet weather this evening with diminishing wind and increasing
clouds. Temps will fall into the 20s and lower 30s by midnight.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MIDNIGHT THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Heavy snow with snowfall rates 1 to 2 inches per hour will impact
  the Friday morning commute, especially across eastern MA/RI

Guidance suite is in pretty good agreement on low track a bit south
and east of the benchmark Friday morning. While this is a
progressive system, it will pack a punch as negatively tilted trough
sweeps across the region with up to 200m height falls off the coast
and dynamic tropopause lowering to about 600 mb. This will result in
explosive deepening with pres falls up to 20 mb from 06-18z ensuring
a period of heavy snow for SNE, especially eastern New Eng. Guidance
has trended a bit SE with heavy banding potential which focuses
heaviest snowfall along and SE of I-95 into SE MA which is NW of a
developing closed 850 mb low tracking across Nantucket. This system
is expected to remain an open wave above 700 mb so this will limit
duration of heaviest snowfall and preclude a major snowstorm for
SNE. Usually we need the 700 mb low closing off to to get a quasi
stationary band and we do not see that with this storm. However, a
moderate snowstorm is expected.

Timing, details and impact...

Snow will overspread SNE between 4-6 AM from west to east. The snow
will ramp up quickly and become heavy at times within an hour of
starting.  There is a very strong signal for mesoscale banding
associated with strong mid level frontogenesis. It's always a
challenge to forecast where banding sets up but latest trends are
favorable for areas along and SE of I-95. Very favorable snow growth
with 30+ units of omega extending into the DGZ suggests potential
for 1-2"/hour snowfall rates from 6-10 am and RI and eastern MA.
Areas to the west from eastern CT through central and NE MA will be
on the western periphery of the banding and we do expect a period of
heavy snow here as well so we upgraded to a winter storm warning in
these areas. It is still possible this banding can shift and it is
essentially a nowcasting situation when the bands begin to develop
on radar. Western MA and western CT will likely remain west of best
forcing which just a brief period of mod/hvy snow as the fgen band
lifts ENE Fri morning. Heavy snow will also impact Cape Cod but
accums here are a bit more uncertain and will be quite variable from
east to west. We upgraded Cape Cod to a warning but this will be
mainly for areas west of Hyannis. While the heaviest QPF is expected
over the Cape/Islands and MVY, best omega is below the favorable
snowgrowth region here and temps near or a bit above freezing will
limit SLR below 10:1. In addition, a mix or even change to rain is
likely for a few hours over Nantucket and possibly up to Chatham.
Winter weather advisories are in place for MVY and BID but nothing
for Nantucket where minimal accums are expected.

The biggest concern will be the timing of heavy snow coinciding with
the brunt the morning commute. This will have a significant impact
with very poor vsbys in heavy snow, with the worst conditions
impacting I-95 from Boston to Providence down to Taunton and
Plymouth.

The heaviest snowfall will begin to taper off by mid morning in the
west and around midday in the east. Some light snow may linger in
far eastern MA into the early afternoon but will end shortly
thereafter and it is possible there will be some sunshine developing
mid/late afternoon especially in the interior. While winds won't be
an issue during the heavy snowfall with generally N winds 10-15 mph,
increasing NW winds are expected during the afternoon with gusts 25-
30 mph and up to 40 mph for the outer Cape/ACK.

Snow accumulations...

As mentioned above, we expect the max accumulations across RI and
eastern MA with generally 6-8 inches, but locally up to 10 inches is
possible where most persistent banding sets up. The highest risk at
this time is across SE MA. Lesser accum further to the west with 2-5
inches in western MA/CT and up to 6" from IJD-ORH-LWM. If banding
does shift NW these areas across central and NE MA could end up with
more snow. For Cape Cod, accums will range from 2-3" over the outer
Cape to 5-7" near the Canal. For the Islands expect 2-5 inches for
BID/MVY and around inch or so for ACK.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights...

* Blustery and cold Fri nite. Sub-zero wind chills in northern and
  northwest MA.

* Slow moderation to temps Sat into Sat night.

* Potential for freezing rain and icing north and west of the I-95
  corridor Sunday into Sunday evening.

* Potentially record breaking cold on Tuesday, certainly the coldest
  we have seen so far this season.

* Chance for light precipitation Wednesday night into Thursday.

Details:

Friday Night:

Coastal storm will continue to pull seaward into the Canadian
Maritimes. Surge of much colder air on NW winds will advect across
SNE with 925 mb temps -12 to -15C! This will help keep the probable
snowpack from Friday intact, but also lead to low wind chills given
NW winds around 15-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Didn't go quite
as low as the coldest guidance given the winds staying up all night
long, but still will have low temperatures in the single digits to
the teens (upper teens-mid 20s Cape Cod and the Islands). Sub-zero
wind chills look probable across northern Worcester County into the
Pioneer Valley and Berkshires, and in the single digits above
zero across the remainder of CT/MA/RI.

Saturday into Saturday Night:

Winds ease as high pressure over the mid-Atlantic ridges into the
region. As high pressure shifts offshore by later Saturday, we do
start to moderate from the very cold air mass in place for Friday.
Mostly sunny and dry conditions but highs only in the mid/upper 20s
for most, to just below the freezing mark from the South Coast, Cape
Cod and the Islands. This means that little if any snowmelt occurs.

Warm advection pattern continues, though initial clear skies will
permit some radiational cooling. Lows around midnight in the upper
teens to mid 20s, with daybreak temperatures mid 20s to mid 30s.

Sunday and Sunday Night:

The first half of Sunday looks dry, with many areas across south
east New England waking up to partial sunshine. Cloud cover will
begin to overspread the region ahead of precipitation around
lunchtime. There is a relatively strong signal that this will be a
freezing rain/ice event in our western zones as a significant
warm nose edges in at 850 mb; model soundings show 850 mb temps
approaching +5C Sunday afternoon. In contrast to the 850 temps,
925 mb temps are forecast to be below freezing, -1 to -2C, with
a subzero temps through the column from about 920mb to the
surface across western MA. A warm front will flirt with SE MA
and RI on Sunday, allowing temperatures in this region to warm
into the low 40s for the better part of the day. However, north
and west of this front, surface temperatures look to remain at
or below freezing. Areas east of Worcester will likely stay
above freezing during the duration of the precipitation event,
leading to a pretty stark cutoff between locations receiving ice
and locations remaining rain. Forecast QPF in western zones is
forecast up to about 0.10 inches over the duration of the event,
but as we have seen several times this season, even trace ice
accumulations can cause slick roads and impact travel. Long
story short, freezing rain and ice are likely for areas near and
north and west of Worcester, with rain likely east of Worcester
and along and east of the I-95 corridor. As temperatures drop
below freezing overnight, precipitation may switch to light snow
as the system pulls away before daybreak Monday.

In addition to light precipitation on Sunday, winds will be gusty. A
925 mb jet between 45 and 50 kt has the potential to mix breezy
conditions to the surface. While 50 kt are unlikely, some guidance
reflects 25-30 kt surface winds Sunday morning and early afternoon.
The LLJ begins to move eastward toward the Atlantic by lunchtime on
Sunday, with gusty conditions diminishing overnight.

Monday and Tuesday...

A series of cold fronts begin to move through our area on Monday and
Tuesday, ushering in VERY cold conditions for Tuesday. 925 mb temps
between -20 and -25C are forecast by both the ECMWF and GFS during
the day on Tuesday, which would translate to near record breaking
cold in southeast New England. Daytime high temperatures will
struggle to make it into the low teens across NW MA, with widespread
10s anticipated. The immediate south coast of MA and RI as well as
Cape Cod and the Islands may break into the low 20s. For
perspective, the forecast high at Logan Airport on Tuesday is
currently 14F, the record low high temperature for that date is 12F.
The most aggressive guidance, ECMWF, shows widespread sub zero temps
Tuesday night. Other guidance keeps most of the area above the zero
mark, with the exception of northwestern MA.

Wednesday through Friday...

Fortunately, the bone chilling cold will not stick around for long,
but seasonable temperatures are expect for much of next week.
Temperatures gradually warm Wednesday through Friday, with high
temps Friday expected to be right around normal; low 30s north and
west to near 40 across the Cape.

Another shot at light precipitation looks to move into our area
Wednesday night into Thursday as a shortwave pushes into our region
from the Northwest. The shortwave looks to be progressive and given
sub freezing temperatures may produce a quick burst of snow across
portions of our area.

moderate to heavy snow persisting through 14-17z W to E then
gradually improving to VFR during the afternoon. Snow likely
changing to rain at ACK around 12z then changing back to snow
late morning before ending. N winds shift to NW during the
afternoon with gusts to 25-30 kt developing.
