High pressure bringing the warm and dry conditions will slide
off the coast tonight as low pressure approaches from the west.
This will result in a change in our weather pattern for the
weekend and into next week. The low will track south of the
region and then stall in place. With southern New England on the
northern side of the low, with breezy east winds bringing in
cooler and more moist air from off the Atlantic. Periods of rain
is expected, especially for the southern half of the region
beginning late Friday and continuing to late Sunday. The storm
will finally weaken it's grip on the area early next week, with
warmer and drier conditions expected for later next week.

Quiet weather continues overnight as weak high pressure moves
over the region and heads offshore. Only item will be increasing
high clouds as the next area of low pressure moving into the
Ohio Valley sends a stream of clouds our way. Given the expected
mostly cloudy skies, this will limit any radiational cooling
potential, despite the relatively dry air in place. Stuck with a
model blend for the forecast with lows primarily in the lower
to mid 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
330 pm update...
Latest set of model guidance didn't offer any real major
differences from what we had going in the forecast. In general,
the forecast challenge is trying to time when light rain will be
making it's way into the region, how far north it will go, and
the overall amounts. Forecast soundings via BUFKIT indicate a
good deal of mid and low level dry air that will be in place
that the increasing moisture aloft will have to overcome. I'd
think that tomorrow afternoon we will have more returns showing
on radar than what is actually reaching the ground. Went with a
blend of hi-res models to drive the hourly PoPs. Overall idea is
that light rain is expected to remain south of the Mass Pike
tomorrow. Think about noontime we might see some light rain
into the Hartford area and then breaking out by 6pm across RI
and far SE MA/Cape/Islands. As the mid and low levels moisten
Friday evening, some light rain may fall in areas along and just
north of the Mass Pike, however amounts will be minimal.
Regarding QPF, used a blend of WPC and the NERFC and then even
shaved a little off across the northern edge as dry air will
still win out. Steadier rains will be confined to the southern
half of the forecast area, and by first thing Saturday morning,
totals will be in the 0.15 to 0.25" range from about HFD-PVD-HYA
line and points south. Probably nothing more than a Trace from
the Mass Pike and points northward. Stuck to the model blend for
temperatures. We should have an opportunity tomorrow where most
places will top out in the 60s before the rain comes in, and
lows Friday night will primarily stay in the mid/upper 40s.

with a gusty east/northeast wind.
* A bit milder inland first half of the new work week, but still
unseasonably cool across eastern New England along with a few
showers around.
* Looking ahead: First 80s latter half of next week?
Big picture...
Global ensemble guidance are quite consistent in showing an area of
low pressure tracking from the Ohio valley into the southern
Appalachians late Friday and then off NC/southern VA late Saturday.
Upper latitude blocking then develops to the north and with a lack
of steering flow, this low pressure then meanders and eventually
tracks further southeast by middle of next week. While we are
confident in the overall synoptics, the placement of the vertically
stacked upper level low will be critical to determining if we get
stuck in a prolonged cool east/northeast flow (especially east of
the CT valley) or enjoy fairly seasonable and decent weather. Either
way, this stubborn upper level low will eventually move further out
to sea and by latter half of next week, we should see a long awaited
surge of late spring/early summer air mass come our way. We should
see the season's first 80s come our way. Climatologically, we see
our first 80 degree day by the first week of May so that will be
right on or slightly behind schedule.
Forecast wise, generally stuck to the blended guidance. The main
exception is with the wind speeds. With global guidance showing
winds around 35-45 kt and the NAM even more aggressive at 45-55 kt
at 925mb and 925mb temps around 0 to +2C this weekend, boosted the
gusts this weekend using CONSAll to the 30-40 kt range, strongest
along and the near the MA/RI south coast as well as Cape Cod and the
Islands. The synoptics add up too, given the 1030mb high over Quebec
and 1005mb low south of Long Island. Whether we get a nasty cold
rain this weekend or not, gale force conditions are likely so those
with beach plans will want to keep an eye on the marine forecast.
Details...
Saturday into Sunday...
Lower than average forecast confidence this weekend. High temps will
be quite cool on Sat especially towards the coast with gusty east to
northeast onshore flow. Highs should be mainly in the 50s and parts
of the eastern MA coast may struggle to get over 50. The gusty winds
and wind-swept rain especially south of the Mass Pike will make it
feel rather raw. Exception will be towards our western zones
including the CT valley that could approach 60 degrees. For
reference, typical highs this time of the year are in the mid 60s to
low 70s.
Monday into Thursday...
Upper level ridging will build across Quebec during the first half
of next week. However, vertically stacked upper level low off the
mid-Atlantic coast will be cut off and barely move in the Monday
through Wednesday timeframe. This will keep the chance for showers
around, with better chances along and south of the Mass Pike.
Overall, expect a mix of sun and clouds given lingering low-level
moisture. If the cut off low moves out a little faster or gets
suppressed further south, temps could be adjusted upwards but we
likely wouldn't get a better idea till we get a better handle on how
this weekend is going to evolve. So as alluded to earlier, mainly
stuck to a blend of guidance for below normal temps across eastern
MA/RI and near normal temps for western MA/CT and with a gradual
warming trend towards mid week. There are indications this pattern
will break down, allowing for late spring/early summer-like warmth
to surge into New England latter half of next week. When (not if)
that happens, we will likely see our first widespread upper
70s/lower 80s of the season. Whether this happens on Thursday or
Friday, the arrival of early summer will be rather abrupt and leave
folks reminiscing about how wonderful winter was.

Fairly quiet/calm conditions overnight as high pressure moves
across the region and slides off to our east. Low pressure
approaches on Friday and then moves to a position to our south
by Saturday. As this happens, light winds on Friday will begin
to strengthen and trend northeasterly for Saturday. The pressure
difference between low pressure to the south and high pressure
to our north will set the stage for a prolonged period of strong
northeast/east winds that will last through Sunday. Widespread
gale force winds, perhaps gusting near 40kt at times, are
anticipated, especially from Cape Cod, across the islands and
the waters along and south of the south coast of MA and RI. Seas
of 1-3 feet tonight and Friday will begin building, and reach
5-9ft by later Saturday.
