.SYNOPSIS...
A weak area of high pressure will bring dry and seasonably mild
weather through Friday. Low pressure moves across southern New
England Saturday, and intensifies into a powerful storm,
bringing strong to damaging winds along with periods of heavy
rain ending as a bit of snow across the interior higher
elevation. Dry, but cold and blustery on Sunday, before mainly
dry weather and above normal temperatures return next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1230 am update...

Forecast mostly on track. Temperatures across southeastern MA
are much cooler than previously forecasted. Thus have updated
near-term temperatures to reflect this trend. Have seen some low
visibilities appear on observations across southeastern MA. This
is from patchy fog development that will continue into this
morning. Not expecting any widespread dense fog at this time.

Discussion...

Overall a pleasant afternoon across Southern New England with
variable amounts of high clouds (less north with considerably more
toward SE MA and central/southern RI) and temps in the mid 40s. Weak
pressure pattern with rather broad 1024 mb high over central NY SE
into the waters south of Long Island.

Expecting a generally quiet evening for the region as high pressure
moves SE, with light winds becoming a light SE/S. Good radiational
cooling for most of the night with clear skies and light winds.
Where there is some concern is across eastern CT, much of RI and SE
MA, as modest southerly flow draws increasing dewpoints northward we
could see a window for patchy mist/fog to develop for the overnight
(with freezing fog where temps are sub-freezing). NAM-based guidance
hits this potential the hardest with narrow T/TD spreads and very
shallow near-surface saturated later up to about 950 mb. That said,
a number of visby guidance also shows visbys between one-quarter and
2 miles in this general area. Did include fog/freezing fog in the
forecast grids for much of this region; for now have refrained on
issuing any fog statements but may need to be considered with later
shift(s). Lows mainly in the 20s with around 30-32F across Cape
Cod/Islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SATURDAY/...
300 PM Update:

Friday:

Weak pressure pattern continues into Friday. Any fog/freezing fog
which developed overnight should dissipate by mid-morning, but
temperatures will also tend to be locally cooler where fog developed
as opposed to further in the interior where temperatures should warm
up quick enough before thicker mid-level clouds spread in from the
NW. Cooler SE onshore flow will also help keep the south coast, Cape
and Islands cooler compared to elsewhere. However still looking at
highs in the upper 40s to low 50s for most, and in the lower to mid
40s for South Coast, Cape and Islands.

Friday Night:

Conditions begin to gradually deteriorate, especially for the second
half of the night. Some cooling should take place early in the
night, then temperatures begin a gradual rise as low pressure over
the mid-Atlantic region spreads precip northward in the warm
advection pattern. While the majority of the precip should fall as
rain with precip beginning towards the pre-dawn hrs Saturday, it is
possible that surface temperatures are near freezing across northern
MA to support snow or rain mix. Early lows in the 30s, rising a
couple degrees by daybreak into the mid 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...

Highlights...

* A powerful storm will bring heavy rain, strong to damaging winds,
  and some interior snow to southern New England on Saturday.

* Blustery and much colder Sunday.

* Above normal temperatures return for the new work week.

Saturday and Saturday night...

The first half of the weekend is by far the most active period of
the extended forecast period. A deep 500 mb trough will dig into the
midwest on Friday night, crossing into the mid-Atlantic on Saturday,
then eventually the trough axis crosses New England Saturday night.
The result is strong southwest flow aloft advecting in very a very
moist airmass (1.5 inch PWATs), in the 99th percentile for mid
March. The same can be said for the magnitude of the jet dynamics.
A rapidly strengthening surface low pressure ahead of the trough
generates a strong low level jet that will act on the moisture plume
to bring heavy rain to southern New England Saturday morning into
the early afternoon. Before the rain is said and done we could see
an inch or so in total. The storm will be moving pretty quickly,
though, limiting flooding issues to potentially some urban and poor
drainage problems.

The biggest question stems from the eventful track of the surface low
and has to do with how quickly sub freezing air is pulled in and
things transition to snow for western and central MA. The GFS
continues to bring in cold air slower and be lower on the snow
totals compered to the ECMWF and NAM. For now given the lingering
discrepancy and lack of higher-res guidance, will hedge toward the
NBM. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the northern Berkshires
where amount will be greater, but for the slopes of the Berkshires
we're now thinking in the 1-3 inch range. As the low passes and cold
advection kicks in rain likely changes to snow on the tail end for
the rest of southern New England late in the day but appreciable
accumulation is not expected.

Another aspect will be some limited low level instability creeping
up toward the south shore as it gets into the warm sector with
dewpoints approaching 50 F, so we could get a few rumbles of thunder
Saturday morning and early afternoon.

Another aspect of this system will be strong, potentially damaging
winds as the low intensifies. This will come into play late Saturday
and Saturday night as cold advection promotes a little better mixing
down of that low level jet. At this point it's looking like it could
be a low end Wind Advisory event, with gusts around 40-45 kts but
not looking like a high end system. A Gale Watch is in effect for
all the waters.

Sunday into next week...

Sunday temps take a quick dip behind the cold front so we're in for
a cold and blustery day with highs once again in the 30s. Flow
becomes rather zonal for the start of next week into mid week with a
warmer than normal airmass overhead leading to highs back in the 50s
each day and no major storm systems in sight.

Through 12Z

VFR with light and variable winds. Could see some patchy fog
develop over the south coast, Cape, and Islands where IFR/LIFR
visbilities will be possible. Have added TEMPO groups for
reduced vsbys at FMH and HYA.

Today - High confidence

VFR. Light southerly winds.

Tonight. - Hight confidence in trends, moderate in timing.

Conditions deteriorate to IFR/LIFR as low-stratus moves in from
the south coastl beginning around 05Z. This will be followed by
light rain overspreading the region from west to east in the
10-12Z time frame. Light southerly winds becoming more
southeasterly by day break.

Saturday - High confidence in trends, less confident in timing

IFR/LIFR ceilings and visbitilies for much of the day as a low-
pressure system moves over southern New England. Rain early in
the day will transition to snow from west to east during the
late morning/early afternoon.

KBOS TAF...High confidence in TAF. SE sea breeze becoming more
probable ~18-21z, though speeds under 5 kt.

KBDL TAF...High confidence in TAF.

Outlook /Saturday Night through Tuesday/...

Saturday: MVFR/IFR conditions possible. Windy with areas of
gusts up to 30 kt. RA, slight chance FZRA.

Saturday Night: Mainly VFR, with local MVFR possible. Strong
