.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure moves southeast of New England today bringing dry and
milder temperatures. Unseasonably mild temperatures are in store for
the region Sunday which will be accompanied by some showers
especially in the morning along with gusty winds in the afternoon.
Another low pressure system will bring rain to the region later
Monday into Monday night with chillier air working back into the
region. High pressure will bring dry weather Tuesday into Wednesday
with near to slightly above normal temperatures. Unsettled weather
looks to return at times by late next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
10 AM Update...

No changes in the latest update. Forecast remains on track.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...

High pres shifts SE of New Eng this afternoon with winds turning
SW which will bring milder air to SNE. 925 mb temps increase
from -6 to -8C at 12z to 0 to -2C by 00z. The developing warm
advection pattern will lead in increasing and thickening clouds
through the day. Any morning sunshine will fade by this
afternoon but dry weather will prevail. After a cold start,
temps will moderate with highs reaching the upper 30s and lower
40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
Tonight...

Surface warm front will approach the region from the south overnight
with continued SW flow. All the CAMs show scattered low topped
showers developing over the ocean and lifting north at the nose of a
developing low level jet. A few of these showers may impact CT, RI
and SE MA late tonight. Another area of light precip associated with
stronger warm advection with the 850 mb warm front will lift across
northern New Eng. If any of this precip were to spill into northern
MA, pockets of light freezing rain would be possible as temps will
be near or a bit below freezing for a time tonight. However, this is
a very low probability as it should remain mostly dry here. Low
temps will occur in the evening with readings upper 20s to mid 30s,
then temps expected to rise late tonight into the 40s near the south
coast and mid/upper 30s interior. As higher dewpoint air advects
northward, expect area of low clouds to develop late tonight.

Sunday...

Warm front lifts north across SNE during the morning. With higher
dewpoint air advecting northward, expect lots of low clouds in the
morning with areas of fog near the south coast. In addition, lead
shortwave ahead of Gt Lakes trough moves east across SNE and will
likely be accompanied by a period of showers moving west to east
across the region, mostly during the morning and exiting SE New Eng
by early afternoon. Expect mainly dry conditions in the afternoon
after these showers exit and may even see some breaks of sun develop
in the interior as mid level drying develops behind the shortwave.
925 mb temps are warming to 10-12C with increasing SW flow so
potential for temps to reach 60-65 away from the south coast if
enough sunshine develops. Record high temps may be challenged at
BDL. Closer to the south coast, it may be difficult to erode the low
clouds which will keep temps in the 50s given the SW flow.

The other issue will be gusty SW winds developing late morning and
especially in the afternoon as a 55-65 kt low level jet moves across
the region. Low level inversion will limit mixing but taking 50
percent of the LLJ supports gusts to 30-40 mph.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Highlights...

* Widespread rain showers later on Monday into Monday night. Gusty
  winds especially along the south coast.

* Dry weather returns Tuesday into Wednesday with near to slightly
  warmer than normal temps.

* Unsettled late in the week heading and into the weekend.

Sunday Night into Monday Morning...

Brief respite in rain showers with a shortwave ridge building from
the central Great Lakes into the eastern Great Lakes. The high will
build into southern New England Sunday night before moving offshore
early on Monday.

Dry and quiet weather expected during this period, but will have
increasing cloud late Sunday into early Monday as the next system
lifts into the eastern Great Lakes. Should still be fairly mild with
low temps around typical highs for this time of year. Lows range
from the mid/upper 30s to the mid/upper 40s from NW to SE.

Monday through Monday night...

Trough over the Mid/Upper Mississippi River Valley early on Monday
lifts northeastward into the eastern Great Lakes by Monday evening
and into northern New England by late Monday night/early Tuesday.
Low pressure will ride along the frontal boundary that is set up
over the region lifting a warm front over the region Monday
afternoon. The low will swing into the region late on Monday before
moving offshore Monday night.

Guidance is in pretty good agreement at this point with respect to
timing this system moving through. The NAM guidance is a bit more
amplified with the trough, which results in a deeper low and more
QPF over the region in comparison to the global guidance. On top of
this the result is a stronger SW/W low level jet as the system is
swinging through. At this point in time have leaned toward the
consensus, which would be the global guidance. The result is less
QPF, weaker winds (still strong gusts at times) and a slower
progressing system.

Expect a roughly 40-60+ kt SW low level jet at 925 hPa impinge on
southern New England later on Monday through Monday night. Have
decent speed convergence over much of the region, so should see
widespread showers late Monday and especially Monday evening. This
also coincides with a 1-1.4 inch PWAT plume overhead, which
approaches the maximum values for this time of year at CHH per SPC
sounding climatology. This plumes moves offshore late Monday/early
Tuesday as the low moves offshore. Should see the shower activity
quickly diminishing late on Monday as drier air punches in. Will
have a fairly widespread roughly 0.25 to 1 inch of QPF with the
highest amounts along the MA/NH/VT border. As colder air wraps in
wake of the system exiting there may be some snowflakes that mix in,
but not expecting any snowfall accumulation at this time.

Temperature wise will be a bit tricky on Monday especially along the
MA/NH/VT border as the frontal boundary will be nearby/overhead. At
this point though think that much of southern New England will be
within the warm sector. Mixing will be a bit limited due to the
inversion in place and stronger winds not coming in until later, but
should see 925 temps range from 4 to 15 degrees Celsius. Right now
have lows in the 50s for most. The only exception is across NW MA
where readings will be in the 40s, but this will likely change as
the fronts location will be key. Temperatures will lower to roughly
0 to -4 degrees Celsius at 925 hPa Monday night. Low temps will fall
into the 30s for most.

Will be gusty overnight especially once the flow becomes more W/NW
aloft, which will be much easier to mix down some 25-40 kt gusts.
May be more difficult during the evening given the SW flow and low
level inversion in place per the NAM/GFS. Do think this is an area
where wind speeds/gusts may need to increase in future forecast
updates.

Tuesday through much of Wednesday...

Dry and quiet weather through this period with high pressure in
control. Mid level ridge builds from Ontario/central Great Lakes
early on Tuesday into New England by early Wednesday. The high
builds over the region later on Tuesday before moving offshore on
Wednesday.

No impactful weather anticipated through this period. Expecting
winds to be a bit gusty on Tuesday due to the tightened pressure
gradient in place, but this will relax especially by Tuesday night
as the high builds in. Temperatures will be similar on both days,
but slightly warmer on Wednesday for portions of the region as we
tap back into southwesterly flow aloft. Highs generally in the 40s.

Late Wednesday through Saturday...

Considerable uncertainty in this timeframe. Will be under cyclonic
flow with a few shortwaves and a deeper trough potentially lifting
into the region. Have stuck close to the NBM guidance, but have kept
chance PoPs through most of this period given the large shift in
deterministic guidance especially on the Thursday timeframe.
Somewhere in this window it appears we will have a coastal low
impact the region. At this point in time it appears that it would be
in the form of rain given thermal profiles, but not out of the
question there could be some snow. Most of the variance at this
point in time is with the amplitude of the wave lifting in per WPC
Cluster Analysis. The secondary question is the positioning of the
troughs along with the strength of the trough/ridge. Falls
essentially into two camps on Thursday with the EPS being the wetter
more amplified solutions (roughly 40 percent) and the GEFS/Canadian
ensembles the drier/weaker solutions (roughly 60 percent variance).
Given this is a toss up at this point, have just stuck with the NBM.
As for Friday there is most uncertainty in how suppressed the ridge
axis will be along with the positioning. Spread is pretty even for
the most part with guidance with all 4 clusters accounting for
roughly 22-31 percent of the variance. Will need to see if things
become clearer in future updates. Stay tuned though as this period
looks active weather wise.

MVFR/IFR 08-12z as stratus develops. Locally dense fog may
develop near the south coast toward daybreak. A few showers
