  reduce visibility.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure south of Nova Scotia Monday afternoon will
continue to usher in arctic air across southern New England, on
blustery northwest winds through Tuesday. Temperatures begin to
moderate Wednesday afternoon with unseasonably mild conditions
Thu into early Friday. Potential for strong winds, heavy rain
and perhaps a rumble of thunder or two Thursday night which may
linger into Friday morning across SE New England. Drier,
blustery and turning much colder Friday afternoon with dry and
seasonably cold weather for next weekend weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1240 AM update...

Forecast remains on track. Have adjusted temperatures in the
near-term to fall in line with latest observations and trends.

Previous discussion...4PM

Arctic short wave moving across ME late Monday. In its wake, arctic
airmass overspreading southern New England with 3 pm observation
from BDL reporting a dew pt of -14F! Very dry, frigid airmass
advecting into the region. This combined with a fresh snowcover,
will set the stage for a very cold night. Pressure gradient slowly
eases overnight, so the deeper valleys likely decouple. Therefore,
have blended in some of the colder guidance, yielding mins overnight
in the single digits regionwide. Northwest breeze of 10-20 mph will
produce wind chills from zero to minus 10! A reminder from the
atmosphere that the calendar still reads February.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
3:55 PM update...

Tuesday...

Dry NW flow, but short wave energy rotating thru the cyclonic flow
aloft will likely yield SCT-BKN strato-cu in the afternoon, per
BUFKIT time sections. Very cold start to the day, but the afternoon
not quite as cold as today, but still colder than normal (40 degs)
with highs only mid to upper 20s. Not as windy as today, but still
west wind 10-15 mph with occasional gusts to 20 mph, will yield wind
chills in the teens.

Tuesday night...

1040+ mb high advects over New England, finally bringing an end to
the brisk winds. Although, still very cold outside the urban areas
given ideal radiational cooling conditions, with light winds and
mostly clear conditions. Therefore incorporated some of the coldest
guidance.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Becoming breezy with temps moderating Wed into Thu.

* Unseasonably mild Thu/Thu night. Potential for a period of heavy
  rain, thunder and strong wind gusts Thu night into early Fri

* Blustery and turning drier and much colder Fri afternoon, then
  mainly dry and seasonably cold next weekend

Wednesday into Thursday...

High pres moves offshore Wed with increasing SW flow developing
through Thu ahead of advancing cold front. This will result in
pronounced low level warming with 925 mb temps reaching 6-8C by Thu.
Wed will be the day with more sunshine and temps moderating into the
40s with gusty SW winds developing. On Thu, there is some
uncertainty with how much low level moisture develops. NAM/RGEM
suggests low clouds and perhaps a few showers while GFS/ECMWF have
less moisture. If we can get some sunshine, potential exists for
temps to reach the lower 60s but due to uncertainty with cloud cover
we will hold temps in the mid/upper 50s. A windy day expected Thu as
50+ kt low level jet develops. Soundings show bulk of the wind above
the inversion but potential for a shallow mixed layer promoting
gusts to 40 mph.

Thursday night into Friday...

Active night expected Thu night as strong cold front approaches from
the west, moving across SNE late Thu night into Fri morning. Some
uncertainty on exact timing but it appears likely that at least
eastern New Eng will be impacted with fropa Fri morning.

Rather potent cold front as southern stream shortwave lifts NE into
the Gt Lakes with 80-90kt low level jet moving across the region.
GEFS wind anomalies are 4-5SD with PWAT anomalies 4SD. NAEFS has
this low level jet nearly maxed out relative to climatology for this
time of year. This is strong signal at day 3/4 supporting a period
of heavy rainfall and strong to damaging wind gusts. System is
progressive which will probably limit heavy rain to a 6 hour window
thus minimizing flood threat but could see 1-2 inches of rain. In
addition, can't rule out some thunder as SWI drop below zero just
ahead of the front. Wind gust potential will depend on how much
mixing we can generate but with 925 mb temps rising to +12C ahead of
the front, expect temps to remain in the 50s to near 60 Thu night in
pre-frontal warm sector enhancing mixing and potential for strong to
damaging winds. There is also a concern for a convective fine line
given the strength of the front and low level jet and marginal
instability. Something that will need to be monitored.

Active weather likely lingering into Fri morning across eastern New
Eng depending on timing of front but latest guidance suggesting a
Fri morning fropa in the east. After an unseasonably mild and
potentially wet start in the east, turning drier, blustery and much
colder Fri afternoon. In fact, 925 temps drop from near 12c at 12z
Fri to -8 to -10C 00z Sat. Temps will crash during Fri post fropa,
falling through the 30s and into the 20s by late day.

Saturday through Monday...

Mainly dry and seasonably cold weekend with highs 30s to near 40 and
lows in the teens and 20s. Northern stream shortwave passage on Sat
could produce a few flurries but column is rather dry. Moderating
temps Mon as high pres moves to the east with low level southerly
flow developing.
