.SYNOPSIS...
Mostly cloudy conditions today with continued above normal
temperatures, with decreasing clouds and falling temperatures to
more seasonable levels Sunday night. Cold and blustery on
Monday with the potential for minor accumulating snowfall along
the south coast into Cape Cod and the Islands. Continued cold
conditions on Tuesday and then temperatures moderate to above
normal Wednesday, although a period of showers are likely.
Trending colder late in the week with rain or snow possible.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
1000 AM Update:

No significant change needed to the going forecast which still
looks to be on track.

Low pressure continues to pull away with light post-frontal
NW winds. Unfortunately still dealing with a blanket of low
overcast with intervals of 1 to 4 SM mist at times. Cloud
ceilings may lift a bit between 16-18z as RAP soundings show
onset of very shallow mixing around then, but overcast to still
nonetheless prevail until late in the day as stronger drying
works its way into Southern New England. Passing shortwave
disturbance to our north could bring some light showers north of
the Pike today but despite the stubborn OVC many will be dry.
Highs not likely to rise much more than a couple degrees from
current values in the mid-upper 40s to around 50 before
stronger cooling/drying takes place as NW flow strengthens.

Previous discussion:

* Looks to be a mild and relatively rain-free day with falling
  temperatures in the afternoon.

Have opted to cancel the Dense Fog Advisory. Saw a drastic
improvement in vsby in the past hour or so as the rain moves out and
winds increase from the north, which will help stir up the lower
atmosphere. While some lingering showers are possible this morning,
we do get into a period of dry slot so while plenty of clouds will
hang around this morning due to abundant antecedent low-level
moisture, expect to see break in the clouds as early as mid to late
morning from west to east. In addition, drier air will be filtering
in this morning as a 1000mb low pressure exits to our southeast.
PWATs will start to fall from 1-1.4 inches to 0.5-0.75 inches by
late morning/early afternoon. The colder air along with the gusty NW
winds don't quite push through till the early afternoon hours, so
for those of you tired of the dreary albeit mild weather, today will
likely feature a mix of sun and clouds by the afternoon hours. So
overall, it might turn out to be a rather nice day with at least
partial sunshine. As the cold front arrives in the afternoon, it
will help trigger a few showers but by no means a washout with
better dynamics to our north. So expect somewhat better shower
chances north of the Mass Pike but again, today's weather theme is
the return of sunshine albeit breezy and cooler conditions. Daytime
highs range from 40s north of the Mass Pike to 50s south of it with
falling dew points during the day from northwest to southeast.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
Tonight...

* Wind chill values fall into the upper single digits to mid teens
  by daybreak Monday for areas N & W of the I-95 corridor.

Strong cold and dry advection will be ongoing on brisk northwest
winds, with surface ridge building into New England. Drier air aloft
should lead to a rapid lifting of ceilings to mostly clear skies.
Surface dewpoints in the 30s to lower 40s drop quickly into the
teens for most inland locations and mid 20s across Cape Cod and the
Islands. 925 mb temps per GFS and NAM sharply fall to around -5 to -
10C. Gusty NW winds will prevent the overnight lows from truly
tanking, however. So kept the overnight lows to around the 50th
percentile of guidance. This means lows in the upper teens to mid
20s, except upper 20s to low 30s along the immediate south coast
into Cape Cod and the Islands. By daybreak Monday, wind chills in
the upper single digits to lower to mid teens for locations north
and west of the I-95 corridor.

The exception to the cloud clearing is across Cape Cod and the
Islands. Strong N or NNE flow along with temperature differential
between the top of mixed layer and SST exceeding 10C will help
generate ocean-effect stratus and even flurries by early morning
Monday. But the main show will hinge on the evolution of an
intensifying low pressure system ejecting out of North Carolina with
potential snow accumulation along the south coast later in the day.
More on that below.

Monday...

* Increasing chances for minor accumulating snowfall across the
  southeastern New England coast, especially Cape Cod and the
  Islands.
* Sub-freezing highs away from the immediate coast.

An intensifying low pressure system will eject from the Outer Banks
and track south of the 70W/40N benchmark. All global and high-res
guidance have trended the precipitation shield considerably
northwards in the last couple of runs, that is, the Sat 12z and Sun
00z. This development has brought the south coast as well as Cape
Cod and the Islands into play for at least minor accumulating
snowfall. Coordinated with WPC and we both agree that it is
reasonable to expect 1 to 3 inches of snow for Cape Cod and the
Islands. Examining the omega and 1000-500mb RH field strongly
suggests that there will be a sharp cutoff in QPF but the million
dollar question is, will the gradient be set up over the SNE
mainland or over the waters. From a snow production mechanism
standpoint, the precipitation shield trending northwards will likely
help induce the seeder feeder effect with ice crystals from the
southern stream helping to seed lower clouds that could lead to
ocean-effect snow squalls across Cape Cod and the Islands on Monday
afternoon. Examining the thermal profile using Bufkit soundings,
temperature difference between the top of the mixed layer and SST
looks to be in the 15-20C range, which according to our research,
favors heavier ocean-effect snow showers to even squalls. Something
to monitor especially since Monday is the first day back to work or
school for many people.

Both the GEFS and EC Ensemble shows rather tight clustering of the
low pressure center track. Moreover, GEFS shows 80% probability of
Nantucket exceeding 3 inches of snow in 24 hours with even a 50%
probability exceeding 6 inches. Hopefully the high-res guidance come
into agreement with the global guidance!

On a separate but related note, it has been 316 days since the
Boston climate site last saw an inch of snowfall, which is now the
5th longest snowless streak in Boston's climate history, which dates
back to 1891. It does not look at this time Boston will break the
snowless streak on Monday, although snow lovers in Boston may have
something to look forward to later in the week (see the long term
discussion). It is just one of those winters where cities like
Richmond, VA and Washington, DC will see their first inch of snow
earlier than Boston. But there is still plenty of winter to go!

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Highlights

Monday night/Tuesday...

CAA behind departing wave will yield a cold and blustery night. NNW
winds will slacken toward morning as ridge of high pressure advects
into the region from the west. Given winds will likely drop off
late, blended in some of the colder MOS guidance to derive min
temps. This yields lows in the teens regionwide, including some
single digits possible northwest MA! Cold wind chills in the evening
before winds diminish late. Not quite as cold for the outer Cape and
Islands, where winds will likely not decouple and yield min temps of
20-25. Cold start Tuesday, but as surface high builds south of New
England, return flow develops and low level WAA results in 925 mb
temps warming from -9C at 12z Tue to -1C by 00z Wed. This will
support highs in the 30s to around 40 along the south coast. Right
on track for early Jan. In fact, relatively light winds Tue along
with abundant sunshine will provide pleasant conditions for early
Jan.

Wednesday...

Strong WAA with 925 mb temps warming to about +7C to +8C by 00z Thu.
Despite increasing clouds and showers likely in the afternoon and
evening, this strong thermal advection will yield mild conditions,
as highs warm into the upper 40s to lower 50s. WAA pattern will be
accompanied by 35-45 kt SW jet at 925 mb. Some of this wind will mix
down to the surface, yielding breezy conditions with SSW winds 15-25
mph.

Thu/Fri...

Short wave trough over ME and New Brunswick early Thu, lifts NE thru
Atlantic Canada, advecting a drier and colder airmass into SNE Thu.
Seasonably cool with highs from the upper 30s to lower 40s, mid 40s
southeast MA. Weak CAA should yield a modest west wind but also at
least partial sunshine.

Saturday...

Ensembles and deterministic guidance suggest a drier and colder
trend behind departing system Fri. Highs only in the upper 20s and
lower 30s.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

18z TAF Update:

Through 00z Monday: High confidence in trends, moderate on
exact timing.

LIFR-IFR to prevail, with better cloud- clearing anticipated
late this afternoon into early tonight. NW winds 5-10 kt, gusts
to around 20 kt in the terrain developing by late-afternoon.

Tonight: High confidence.

Rapid improvement to VFR ceilings across most of the interior
and coastal plain. Ocean effect cloudiness then increases in
coverage across Cape Cod and the Islands with MVFR bases.
Possible SHSN after 08z for HYA, ACK visbys around 4 SM, as low
as 2 SM at times. NW winds 10-15 kt, gusts 18-20 kt interior,
25-30 kt coastal MA, strongest across Cape and Islands.

Monday: Moderate confidence.

VFR for most terminals in the interior. Degraded conditions
(MVFR-IFR, periods LIFR) on Monday across Cape Cod and the
Islands but also PVD for a time as coastal low passes south of
40N/70W. Flurries possible to I-95, minor accumulations of snow
on runways at FMH, HYA with best chance of plowable snow accums
especially at ACK. Gusty winds will make for blowing snow at
times at ACK.

In the interior, N/NE winds around 10 kt. For BOS/PVD, N/NE
winds 10-15 kt gusts 20-25 kt. NE winds 15-18 kt gusts 25-28 kt
for Cape Cod, and gusts upper 30s kt at ACK.

Monday Night: High confidence.

Snow ends as flurries across Cape Cod and the Islands early
Monday night rapid improvement to VFR by late-evening. Gusty
N/NW winds decrease rapidly to 4-7 kt in the interior, and
around 5-10 kt eastern MA and Cape Cod/Islands thru overnight.

Potential for low-end gale force wind gusts up to 35 kt Monday
afternoon into overnight. In addition, a period of light to

southern waters, which may also lead to reduced vsby. Seas 5-8

350 AM Update:

* Issued a Coastal Flood Statement for the east-facing coastline
  for midday Monday tide cycle.

High astronomical tides today and Monday, especially the late
morning into midday tide cycle. Not much wind today so not expecting
much storm surge. However, can't rule out some spotty minor
inundation. Greater concern is Monday when offshore low tracking
well south of New England, generates NE winds along the eastern MA
coastline. This may generate a storm surge of up to 1 ft, yielding
storm tides of about 12.3 to 12.8 ft at Boston and 5.3 ft to 5.8 ft
MLLW at Nantucket. These total water level heights combined with 5-8
ft seas offshore may result in minor coastal flooding along the
eastern MA coastline. Greatest risk given wind and surge will be
across Nantucket and possibly as far north as coastal Plymouth
county.
