.SYNOPSIS...
An approaching cold front will bring a round of showers and
thunderstorms later this afternoon, mainly to western Massachusetts
and northern Connecticut where some storms could bring damaging
winds and hail. Cooler but seasonable temperatures return Tuesday
through Thursday. Summertime warmth arrives Friday with the
potential for our first 90 degree temperatures Saturday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
* Dense fog this morning near the south coast.
* Severe storms possible in western MA/northern CT 5 PM-9 PM.
Areas of dense fog will persist near south coast, Cape Cod, and
Islands where a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM. We
should see some improvement around midday, but dense fog will most
likely return late this afternoon which may prompt issuance of
another advisory.
Fog and low clouds will gradually overspread most of SNE through
daybreak, exceptions being western/central/NE MA. Already seeing
leading edge of low clouds advancing northward, closing in on
Providence and Boston and getting closer to Hartford. Expect to see
some breaks develop during morning, especially away from coast,
which will allow for daytime heating. Closer to coast, gradient
remains weak enough to allow for sea breezes from later this morning
into afternoon, keeping things more stable.
Approaching cold front will set the stage for a potential round of
severe weather later this afternoon, mainly after 5 PM in western MA
and northern CT. Open upper trough rotates through Great Lakes with
more of a disjointed jet (one piece exiting Great Lakes and another
across northern Plains). This synoptic pattern closely matches one
from our local study of SNE severe weather (B-2) which can be
favorable for severe storms and even tornadoes somewhere in the
Northeast.
Models, including CAMs, show an environment featuring moderate
surface-based CAPE up to 1500 J/kg, increasing 0-3 km shear of 30-
40kt, and marginal mid level lapse rates approaching 6C/km, all
focused in western MA and especially CT. Expectation is for a broken
line of storms to develop across upstate NY/PA and advance eastward,
reaching MA/CT border around 5 PM per HREF timing. Line should
advance eastward to CT Valley by 6-7 PM, then weaken as it
reaches Worcester County and NE CT by 8-9 PM and encounters a
more stable marine layer in place across RI and eastern MA.
Agree with SPC outlook having a Slight Risk in western New England,
which includes a main threat of wind damage and a secondary
threat for large hail. HREF severe weather probs seem to be
favoring CT (and especially areas to our SW) where greater
instability should reside. Regarding tornado threat, while an
isolated tornado cannot be ruled out given instability and low
level shear profiles, we do seem to be lacking high dewpoints
(70+F) in SNE which would support low LCLs.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Weakening activity in central MA/NE CT may bring scattered showers
into RI and eastern MA this evening, but it's also possible that it
dissipates entirely, leaving these areas dry. Cold front follows
bringing wind shift to W/NW and clearing overnight, with lows
falling into 50s.
High pressure builds into Northeast Tuesday. Cyclonic flow aloft
will lead to plenty of diurnal clouds but lower levels remain dry to
prevent any showers from forming (maybe a sprinkle?) Should also be
rather breezy too as mixing layer deepens in response to colder air
aloft. Highs will be more seasonable, ranging from mid 60s to mid
70s.

Tuesday night through Thursday...
Dry and cooler but seasonable weather dominates through Thursday
thanks to a closed low north of New England with a building ridge
advancing from the west. Highs will be right around normal for mid
May, in the upper 60s and low 70s. One notable change from the
weather of late will be cooler overnight lows, in the 40s and low
50s thanks to the drier airmass (dewpoints in the 20s and 30s).
Friday through Sunday...
Zonal steering flow over the CONUS mid week becomes more amplified
Friday into the weekend as a trough digs into the intermountain
west, pumping up a mid level ridge over the eastern seaboard. This
brings a surge of warm air into southern New England, largely on
Saturday, perhaps lingering into Sunday. So, while temperatures will
top out in the 70s Friday, by Saturday we're looking at highs
pushing 90+, especially in places like the Merrimack and Connecticut
River Valleys. While the ECMWF has backed off on the near record
heat it was advertising earlier this weekend, the GFS is holding
onto those low to mid 90s. For now, going with a blend of guidance,
in the upper 80s and low 90s for Saturday afternoon. It will feel
quite humid as well, with dewpoints surging into the low to mid 60s.
A cold front approaches around the second half of the weekend
extending from a low that moves from the Great Lakes into Quebec
Sunday. The timing of this front, which is not in agreement between
the global guidance sources, will determine whether we get another
hot day on Sunday.

.AVIATION /07Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.
06Z TAF Update: Medium confidence, mainly due to uncertainty in
timing.
LIFR in dense fog expected most of day near south coast, Cape
Cod, and Islands. Conditions may lift a bit early this afternoon
but should stay IFR, before returning back to LIFR 20-23Z and
persisting through night.
Elsewhere, IFR/MVFR develops through 12z across much of CT,
RI, and eastern MA with VFR cigs farther north and west. These
lower cigs should lift to MVFR/lower-end VFR 14-17z. Sea breeze
expected along E MA coast before winds turn to S later in day.
Should see line of showers/storms by 21-23z near Berkshires and
as far east as CT Valley and perhaps ORH. Brief IFR conditions
in heavy rain and wind gusts to 40kt possible. Storms should
weaken quickly once reaching ORH, with just scattered showers
farther to the east this evening.
Cold front pushes through SNE later tonight with wind shift to
W/NW and improvement to VFR, which continues into Tue.

Main concern today and early tonight is areas of dense fog,
especially on south coastal waters due to persistent S/SW flow. May
not see much if any improvement today other than for nearshore
locations. Cold front crosses waters overnight, shifting winds to
W/NW and bringing improving visibility. May also see a few showers
as front passes.
Winds and seas should reach SCA later this evening with increasing
W/NW flow and have continued SCA for outer waters where we are
more confident. May eventually need to add some of the nearshore
waters as well but right now winds look marginal.
