...WINTER COMING BACK TO COLORADO WEDNESDAY...

.An approaching storm system will spread snow into the mountains 
later tonight, and from north to south across eastern Colorado on 
Wednesday. The snow will diminish on the plains late Wednesday night 
and in the mountains Thursday morning. The heaviest snow will be in 
the mountains north of Berthoud Pass. On the plains, areas north and 
east of Fort Morgan will be favored along with areas near the 
foothills. There is also potential for a band of heavier snow 
elsewhere, but this is uncertain. Snow amounts will be 2 to 6 inches 
in most areas, but up to 20 inches in the higher mountains north of 
Berthoud Pass.

With snow beginning during the day Wednesday, driving conditions may 
deteriorate substantially around rush hour Wednesday afternoon.

.An approaching storm system will spread snow into the mountains and 
from north to south across eastern Colorado today. The snow will 
diminish on the plains late Wednesday night and in the mountains 
Thursday morning. The heaviest snow will be in the mountains north 
of Berthoud Pass. On the plains, areas north and east of Fort Morgan 
will be favored along with areas near the foothills. There is also 
potential for a band of heavier snow elsewhere, but this is still 
uncertain. Snow amounts will be 2 to 6 inches in most areas, but up 
to 18 inches in the higher mountains north of Berthoud Pass.

Weak upper trof across southwest Colorado will move across the
state through Tuesday morning. The brunt of the moisture and QG
ascent will mainly stay south of our county warning area with main
impacts over south central and southeast Colorado. Web cameras
and observations are looking mainly dry conditions this evening.
Will keep a few snow showers/flurries over Park county and also
over the Palmer Divide. Little if any accumulation with this
system. Will make some evening adjustments with earlier clearing
of the cloud cover and ending much of the snow chances except
where mentioned above. Otherwise a quiet night tonight.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)

Light showers continue to develop southwest of Denver about as
expected. So far there's been little intensity but there is an
upward trend. The idea of some places getting a little
accumulation in a band from Summit county towards Monument still
looks alright. Most of the Denver metro area will miss out as the
air is drier and more stable as you go further northeast, but
there could be some flurries over the south and west edges of the
city.

All of this should end by mid evening with pretty good clearing
across most areas later in the night. Some clouds will likely be
coming back into the northern mountains by morning. Lows on the
plains will depend on the timing of the clearing. The current
forecast is a little below guidance and looks fine. We did back
off of the extremely cold lows for North and Middle Parks. In
Grand County there's still a fair amount of moisture with dew
points around 10 above, so it would be hard to get to 20 below.
North Park might be a better candidate as it's only in the mid
teens now and a bit drier.

For Tuesday, clouds will be increasing and there could be some
very light snow up over the northern mountains. We'll have to
watch to see how fast the clouds come. Our forecast could be too
warm if they arrive sooner, it's fine if our mostly sunny going
towards mostly cloudy is correct. There's also already a little
north wind developing which won't help.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

The next system will impact northern CO, starting late Tuesday
night and continue through Thursday. The timing with this system
looks to be a little faster, so the onset of snow will be sooner
as well. A weaker cold front looks like it will move into
northeast plains ahead of the main system Tuesday night, which
could produce a chance of light snow overnight. On Wednesday, a
much colder blast of arctic air will settle into the Front Range
and northeast plains by midday, and remains in place through
Friday morning. The models show a region of weak-mdt QG ascent
developing in the mid/upper levels over northern CO late Tuesday
night into Wednesday evening. Then a secondary shot of weaker QG
ascent passes over the region on Thursday, with the strongest lift
splits to the west and south then moves over northern NM. There
is a 100 kt jet max ahead of the trough that will translate across
southern CO by Wednesday evening. This upper jet could help
produce enhanced bands of heavier snowfall Wednesday afternoon
into Wednesday night, on the cold side of the upper jet. Spatial
cross-sections show some banded potential, mainly north of Denver.
Storm totals will be tricky but highlights will likely be needed,
especially in the mountains. At this time, storm totals in the
6-14 inch range seem reasonable, with the heaviest amounts north
of the Interstate 70 corridor. Across the northeast plains, storm
totals generally in the 3-5 inch range. Main concern for heavier
snowfall may be along the northern border area, near southeastern
WY and southwest NE. There is the potential for heavier snowfall
there, 6-8 inches, but confidence in this is not high enough to go
with a winter storm watch. Overall, it looks like most areas will
see advisory criteria snowfall at some point, with the heaviest
snowfall occurring late Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night.
Lighter snowfall will continue on Thursday but the focus should
start shifting to the south by Thursday night. Minimum
temperatures Thursday morning and Friday morning will hover a
little above zero, with high temperatures on Thursday struggling
to get into the upper teens. Friday will still be cold but there
will be some temperature recovery, as the arctic airmass will
start shift eastward into the Central Plains. Much warmer and
drier weather is still in store for the weekend, as a ridge of
high pressure builds into the West. The northwesterly flow aloft
over CO on Saturday, will transition to more of zonal flow by
Sunday. Gusty downslope northwest/west winds expected especially
in the Front Range mountains/foothills at that time.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow showers will develop this afternoon over the higher from
Interstate 70 southward and move east affecting mainly Park,
Jefferson, and Douglas counties. Most of this area will see a
shower or two with an inch or two of snowfall. A few spots may see
several showers with up to 4 inches of snow by early evening, and
slushy roads are possible under the heavier showers. East of the
mountains the showers should produce an inch or less of snow. The
showers will end by 9 PM.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

An arctic airmass will arrive Wednesday and continue into Thursday
with below zero temperatures possible Wednesday night and Thursday
night. A prolonged period of light to moderate snowfall will
accompany this cold airmass with travel being impacted. The best
window for accumulating snowfall will be Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday. Friday will not be as cold with the chance of
snow diminishing across the region. Dry and warm weather will
return for the weekend.
