...COLD AND SNOW MOVING IN THIS AFTERNOON AND CONTINUING THROUGH 
WEDNESDAY...

.An extended period of snow, colder temperatures, and slick and 
hazardous travel conditions can be expected, starting late this 
afternoon and evening.

A slow moving storm system will move into the area later today and 
remain over the area through Wednesday. In addition, a series of 
cold fronts will push across the plains ushering in much colder 
temperatures. Snow will first develop over the mountains and 
foothills this afternoon and then spread east across the I-25 
Corridor in the late afternoon and early evening. Snow continues to 
spread eastward over the eastern plains later this evening. The snow 
will continue through Wednesday before coming to an end Wednesday 
night.

THROUGH WEDNESDAY...

.A slow moving storm system will keep snow falling through 
Wednesday. Early Wednesday evening, the snow had been heaviest south 
of the Denver metro area but was increasing further north in areas 
along and west of Interstate 25. Snowfall will continue in these 
areas and will be heavy at times overnight. The snow will also 
continue to expand eastward across the plains. Light snow will 
continue through the day Wednesday and into Wednesday evening. 
Significant snow may last longer along the base of the foothills.

The snow will come to an end Wednesday night, but temperatures will 
be very cold Thursday morning.

Lows across Middle and North Park will not be as cold, in the
normal cold areas, as better mixing occurs overnight.  Otherwise
winds will stay gusty over the higher terrain but speeds will
remain below warning criteria.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)

Strong, gusty winds over the mountains will diminish through the
evening hours as flow aloft and mid level gradients weaken. On the
plains, there is a surge of stronger, gusty winds spreading
southward. However, a rather persistent anticyclone centered in
the Greeley/Weld County area should keep lighter southeasterly
winds over most of the I-25 Corridor through the night. Clouds are
expected to increase overnight, and then lower again on Tuesday
with a continuation of weak southeasterly upslope but gradual
moistening. There will also be persistent but generally weak QG
through the day, also aiding cloud and eventual snow development.
We could see a couple flurries over the mountain peaks tonight,
but the main weather maker will begin over the mountains and
foothills tomorrow afternoon before spreading snow onto the
plains. Temperatures will be much cooler tomorrow, but strong
valley inversions will finally be eroding.

There is general agreement that the more persistent light snow
will start toward mid afternoon in the mountains and foothills,
and then onto the plains very late in the afternoon and through
the evening, as the column slowly saturates. We've started the
Winter Weather Advisory accordingly. More on expected snowfall and
amounts in the Long Term discussion below.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

Two main concerns for impacts this period:

1) Snowfall Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday

2) Very cold temperatures and hazardous wind chills Wednesday and
Thursday

Deterministic and ensemble guidance have been consistent in
showing the potential for snowfall across the region. There is
good upper level support with this system as a 500 mb trough
deepens and approaches the region with a favorable region of
synoptic ascent. CO becomes positioned in the right entrance
region of an upper level jet which will further promote upward
motion. Moisture gradually increases Tuesday afternoon/evening
which is evident in model soundings. A frontal boundary moves
across the plains and winds transition to easterly flow which will
later provide favorable flow to enhance snowfall in the
foothills. Snowfall will likely start in the afternoon timeframe
Tuesday expanding in coverage eastward into the evening hours. Dry
air in place may inhibit the onset of snowfall over the urban
corridor/plains at first, but cross sections show a decent moist
layer in place after 00Z increasing snow chances. Soundings show
sufficient upward motion in the dendritic growth zone which will
provide ideal conditions for moderate snowfall rates Tues. night
into Weds. The main enhancement will likely be a result of the
upslope flow. Winds turn SE overnight into Weds. which may enhance
snowfall in the northern foothills and Larimer and Weld counties.
Model guidance also shows another round of favorable upward
motion in the QG-omega fields Weds. which will continue to support
snowfall during the day. With positioning under the jet max as it
exits, banding is possible although details in where they could
set up are uncertain at this time. Main impacts with this system
will be its overlap with the PM commute Tues. and AM commute Weds.
It will be cold enough for snow to accumulate on roads to create
slippery conditions. Snow gradually decreases in the evening hours
Weds. In terms of amounts, the foothills will see the best chance
for the highest totals given the favorable upslope component
flow. Although there is spread among ensemble and deterministic
guidance for exact amounts, there is good agreement for the best
accumulations to be in the foothills with best chances in the
northern foothills. Can see a range of 6-12" in those areas
followed by 4-7" in the urban corridor with better chances for
higher amounts further west. 2-6" can be expected over most of the
eastern plains.

Cold temperatures are the next concern for the period. Cold air
dives into the region Tues. night over the course of the snow
event leading to well-below normal temperatures through Friday AM.
Highs on Weds. have a good chance of remaining in the upper teens
across the plains/urban corridor. Winds will contribute by
putting wind chill values in the single digits below zero for most
places. Cloud cover decreases Weds. night into Thurs. and
combined with fresh snow cover will result in a frigid night. Lows
in the single digits below zero over the plains/urban corridor
and negative teens over the high terrain can be expected. Wind
chills will be hazardous and approaching wind chill advisory
criteria over the plains.

With a ridge building into the region, Thursday afternoon and
Fri. will be dry with temperatures warming Fri. Ensemble guidance
shows the potential for another system Sat. into Sun. which may
bring snow chances to mostly the mountains; however, there is
uncertainty in the details such as snow amounts.

Southeast winds will prevail through tonight and into Tuesday
morning. Winds eventually turn northeast at 18Z Tuesday. Clouds
will increase and lower tonight and Tuesday morning. Ceilings down
to 6000 ft may develop by 15z. Snow forms in the Denver area
around 00Z Wednesday, maybe a little earlier near the foothills at
KBJC.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Strong winds are expected to occur in the Front Range Mountains
and Foothills through afternoon. The strongest winds are expected
in the mostly above 7000 feet, with wind gusts up to 80 mph
possible. It will also be windy over the far northern plains late
this afternoon and evening, with gusts around 45 mph.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

A storm system will bring snowfall Tuesday afternoon through
Wednesday. Moderate accumulations will lead to travel impacts and
possibly winter weather highlights for the urban corridor. This
system will also bring very cold air, with lows possibly falling
below zero across much of the plains and wind chills into the
negative teens to 20s Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
