Winds across the area diminished quickly after sunset and should
continue to decrease as they turn to normal drainage patterns for
the night. Typical breezy conditions in the mountains will
persist. The potential for threatening winds has ended as
expected and we expired our High Wind Warnings late this
afternoon. Snowfall continues to slowly develop in the mountains,
mainly around the peaks of the Park and Front Ranges but is
gradually covering more of the lower elevations as well. Water
vapor imagery shows plenty of upstream moisture in the west-
northwesterly flow aloft to support a gradual increase in coverage
and intensity of orographic snow showers overnight, as previously
discussed. The forecast is on track with only minor updates this
evening.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

We should see winds subside over the next few hours across the
forecast area. The best subsidence and stronger winds aloft are
moving east of the plains, and the loss of daytime heating will
also contribute. Across the mountains, winds are still strong
enough to keep gusty winds through the overnight hours, but the
highest wind potential is quickly coming to an end. All of our
High Wind Warnings will be allowed to expire at 5pm. Mountain snow
is also slowly developing, mainly contained to the Park Range,
far northern Front Range, and portions of North Park. Most of this
snow has been fairly light, but snow should pick up in coverage
and intensity overnight as better moisture arrives. Lapse rates
over the high country still aren't particularly impressive and
most totals will be a few inches or less. Overnight lows should be
fairly chilly across the lower elevations of the plains, while
the foothills/urban corridor remain mild with weak downslope
winds.

The forecast becomes much more challenging tomorrow ahead of our
next storm system. The main feature will be the arrival of a
potent cold front tomorrow afternoon, associated with a subtle
shortwave embedded in northwest flow aloft. Though the 500mb
shortwave trough is barely more than a ripple in the flow, our
area will be in the left exit region of an approaching 140kt jet
streak. Though the upper trough isn't impressive, it looks like
the surface cold front will be the strongest of the season.
Temperatures in the afternoon will briefly warm up into the 30s to
40s across the plains, before dropping into the single digits by
the evening. Snow is expected to develop behind the frontal
passage as a result of deepening upslope flow, and aided by mid-
level frontogenesis and the positioning of the upper jet. There is
still some question as to how much moisture there will be to work
with behind the front, with the ECM/GFS both much more bullish on
QPF compared to the hi-res suite. We've bumped up the timing on
snow tomorrow and slightly increased QPF, but we'll need to go
another model cycle before making any headline decisions. More on
the plains snow potential in the long range section.

Over the mountains, orographic snow will be the story of the day,
with heavy mountain snow likely in the afternoon. Cross sections
show well established WNW flow aloft with moisture continuing to
deepen. Snow will also spread across the mountain valleys with
banded snowfall also a possibility. It will be quite windy across
the high country with gusts to 45 mph likely. The combination of
snow and blowing snow is likely to cause travel hazards for the
I-70 and Highway 40 corridors, and thus we'll start a Winter
Weather Advisory at 5AM for the mountain valleys.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)

Main concern will be the snow potential for the mountains and
plains in the Wednesday night through early Thursday timeframe.
Wednesday evening we will be in post frontal regime. General snow
amounts look to be 1 to 4 inches but there is some concern for
higher amounts with more banded snowfall as the jet streak
meanders and gradually lifts northward on Thursday. Main event
looks to be Wednesday evening but some lingering light snow
expected through the night. There could be some higher amounts
just close the foothills and closer to the northern border areas
of Wyoming and Nebraska. For now, no hilites for the plains but
could need an advisory as we get closer to the event for areas
near the foothills. In the mountains, the moisture depth begins to
become more shallow Thursday afternoon and night with snow
finally ending early Friday.

Even though the snow goes away, the wind doesn't. Cross sections
continue to show strong winds with 40-60kt cross barrier flow across
the higher mountains. Will continue to show strong winds in the
forecast through Friday.

For Friday night and Saturday, the flow turns back more
southwesterly before the next trof moves across Colorado Saturday
and Saturday night. There will be a period of snow in the mountains
during this period. There will be an associated cold front over the
plains but upslope component is weak and very little moisture
associated with it. Possibly a slight chance of snow over the Palmer
Divide.

VFR through Wednesday morning. Northwest winds will spread off the
foothills by 16z and reach KDEN/KAPA by 18z. There may be an hour
or two of more westerly winds before they go northwest. Gusts up
to 35 knots are possible. A cold front will pass 21z-23z with
winds becoming north with gusts to 35 knots. IFR conditions in
snow are expected to develop in the 23z-01z time frame. Localized
LIFR ceilings are possible Wednesday evening.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Strong winds will continue across the mountains and spread into
the plains this afternoon. Gusts in the 50 to 65 mph range will
be common in exposed areas of the Front Range mountains and
foothills, and there could be a period with gusts up to 80 mph in
wind prone foothills areas through the early afternoon. At lower
elevations, gusts of 30 to 50 mph will be common by midday, with
gusts to 65 mph possible near the northern Colorado border.

Snow will spread into the mountains this afternoon. It will be
light in areas south of Rocky Mountain National Park, but areas
near the Wyoming border may have periods of moderate to heavy snow
overnight. Accumulations by late tonight will be 1 to 3 inches,
except 3 to 6 inches in the higher northern mountains. Winds will
remain strong tonight, with gusts to 60 mph over the higher
mountains and 40 mph in the valleys producing areas of blowing and
drifting snow.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Snow will continue in the mountains Wednesday into Thursday
morning. Strong westerly winds will produce gusts up to 75 mph
with extensive blowing and drifting snow. While this will be worst
over the higher mountains, there will be some blowing snow in the
valleys at times.

On the plains, it will turn colder and breezy Wednesday afternoon,
then a period of snow is expected on the plains Wednesday night
with some accumulations likely. Snow will likely return to the
mountains again on Saturday. A new pattern arriving Sunday evening
which will bring drier and warmer conditions across the region.
