Humidity has increased and winds have diminished across the region
this evening and conditions are expected to improve overnight.
Therefore the Red Flag Warning has been cancelled for the area.

.UPDATE...
Issued at 1006 AM MDT Wed May 11 2022

Currently the center of the upper low is over the CA/NV border
with southwest flow over the state. Smoke from wildfires in NM is
causing some haze in the area that will slightly worsen over the
far eastern plains through the afternoon before the wind shift
helps to push it eastward.

Fire danger continues to be high with humidity values already in
the lower teens across much of the metro and higher elevation
areas. The only exception is the far northeast plains where they
started off a bit more moist and are further from the drying
influence of the southwest winds. I do expect them to also start
to drop into the teens with mixing after 11 am. Winds are still on
track to gust up to 35 mph over much of the southern foothills,
Palmer Divide, and metro areas east to the KS border through the
afternoon with gusts to 45 mph for the higher elevations and South
Park. This will create critical fire weather conditions into the
evening hours.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 323 AM MDT Wed May 11 2022

Another critical fire weather day across the plains and high
mountain valleys with widespread gusty southwest winds and low
humidities (see fire weather discussion below). Large scale
features a closed low over Northern California which will result
in a strong southwest flow aloft over Colorado. The airmass will
be warmer today as 700mb temperatures climb to around +14c. This
seems reasonable given the 700mb temperature of +14C at ABQ last
evening and similar readings over Western Texas. This will put
afternoon temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s across the
plains along with near record temperatures. The Denver record
today is 90 degrees so will be close with a forecast max of 89
expected.

The airmass will very dry today and expect a well mixed airmass
below 500mb. This will result in the stronger southwest winds
mixing down to the surface by later this morning and afternoon.
Too dry for thunderstorms today as surface dewpoints will plummet
across the northeast plains despite the 40-50 dewpoints existing
now over the far northeast plains. In fact there is some stratus
that has developed over the plains with both LIC and AKO reporting
low clouds the past hour. Any storms that do develop should be
over on the Kansas side of the  border.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

Thursday through the weekend, the general upper level pattern will
support a period of dry conditions and above normal temperatures.
With periods of breezy conditions, fire weather will be the main
concern. Better moisture returns to the plains early next week
increasing potential for afternoon shower/thunderstorm chances.

Thursday, a strong shortwave trough lifts to the northeast of the
region bringing a front across the plains. Moisture is limited
keeping precipitation chances little to none, with low chances
confined to the high northern mountains. The main concerns with the
passage of this system will be fire weather conditions across much
of the region and high winds over the higher mountains. A 700mb wind
max positions over eastern Colorado paired with strong QG subsidence
working into the region. Model soundings show efficient mixing of
winds down to the surface. The ECMWF extreme forecast index signals
the anomalously high wind potential, especially over the higher
mountains. Cross sections indicate potential for mountain wave
enhancement of winds Thursday morning for the high mountains.
Ensemble members display good agreement for gusts over 40mph with
outlier members 60+mph. Recent runs of the HRRR continue to
highlight potential for gusts reaching High Wind Warning criteria
in the 80mph range for the high mountains of Boulder/Larimer
Counties. With a high bias in the HRRR and uncertainty in the
duration of criteria winds, have held off on any highlights.
Winds over the plains will be gusty as well with ens members
clustering gusts in the 35-40mph range with some higher members
as well. With strong subsidence and efficient mixing, conditions
will be quite dry with relative humidities below 15 percent in
most areas. This will lead to critical fire weather conditions. As
the cold front pushes across the plains towards the afternoon,
areas of dust may be possible over the eastern plains given a
period of stronger winds and strong low level lapse rates.

Friday, zonal flow aloft develops promoting dry conditions and
weaker winds than Thursday. Ensemble guidance shows potential for
gusts 20-30 mph which combined with low relative humidities will at
least elevate fire weather conditions.

Saturday into Sunday an upper level ridge slowly builds into the
region promoting warm and dry conditions. There may be some hope on
the horizon for precipitation next week. Ensemble guidance
indicates better moisture over the eastern plains starting Monday.
Paired with marginal instability, this will support shower and
thunderstorm chances in the afternoons early next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

Winds will be the greatest operational impact today with VFR
conditions. Winds will increase out of the southwest with speeds
up to 25kt then increase after 18z up to 32kts for DEN and APA
with BJC topping out around 25kts. Winds will shift more westerly
after 14z and be due west after 16z with gusting up to 32kts.
Winds will continue to gust in the 20 to 30kt range through
Thursday afternoon for all terminals.

Widespread critical fire weather conditions expected today over the
plains with dry airmass in place along with increasing southwest
winds by afternoon. This will impact all of the eastern plains of
Colorado and also through the high mountain parks. Highest
critical threat will be over South Park and stretching east over
the Palmer Divide. A bit less wind further north closer to the
foothills.

Conditions look favorable for critical fire weather conditions
Thursday with dry and windy conditions across the plains, southern
foothills, and portions of south, middle and north Park. As a
shortwave passes to the north, the pressure gradient tightens with
a 700mb wind max positioning over the region. Model soundings
indicate efficient mixing down of these winds to the surface
leading to gusty winds 35-40 mph across most areas with higher
gusts over the higher mountains. Relative humidities drop into the
low teens with values dropping into the single digits in South
Park, Palmer Divide, and Lincoln County. A Fire Weather Watch has
been issued from 9 AM to 9 PM Thursday.

Dry and warm conditions continue Friday into the weekend with
relative humidities staying in the teens across the plains and
foothills. Winds weaker than the previous few days may limit
potential for critical conditions. Although there is potential
for gusts 20-30 mph Friday which will bring conditions near-
critical. Saturday and Sunday display potential for elevated
conditions as well. Heading into next week, relative humidities
stay fairly dry Monday with potential for some relief after
Monday as better moisture moves into the region.

and Northeast Colorado for Today and again on Thursday...

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Critical fire weather conditions will be widespread across the
northeast plains and high mountain parks today with gusty
southwest winds and low humidities. Dry and warmer conditions are
expected with high temperatures around 90 degrees across lower
elevations.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Thursday, critical fire weather conditions are likely across the
plains and high mountain parks with low relative humidities and
gusty winds.

Warm, dry, breezy conditions likely persist through the weekend
into early next week. As a result, fire weather highlights seem
likely most days.
