Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Denver/Boulder CO 1058 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 .UPDATE... Issued at 1026 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 Minor updates were made to today's forecast to account for latest observational and CAM trends. Temperatures were left alone though there is a chance they are too warm across the some of the plains and I-25 corridor. Continued upslope out of the northeast has been ongoing this morning and models are now trending towards delaying the west winds to scour out the cool/moist air near the surface. Given the trends, we have moved the west winds along and east of I-25 to later this afternoon, and when they occur, temperatures should easily reach their expected highs in the mid 70s. Along the Cheyenne Ridge of northern Larimer-Weld-Logan Counties and along the Palmer Divide, the cooler/moister air will be scoured out by early afternoon. Elsewhere in the higher elevations of Larimer/Jackson/Grand Counties, webcams continue to show snow showers. Thus have kept PoPs elevated through 1 PM with no travel impacts expected. The RFW for this afternoon looks on track once the west winds move off the terrain, and we will keep that going as currently highlighted. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 322 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 Strong upper trof and 145kt jet streak will be lifting out into Wyoming and Montana early this morning with moderate QG subsidence across Colorado. The impacts for Colorado will be the continued high wind potential over the higher mountains this morning and critical fire weather conditons over southern and eastern portions of our county warning area. Already seeing gusty winds of 50 to 80 mph through the night across the central and southern mountains of Colorado and these stronger winds have also moved into portions of the north central mountains through the morning hours, including Summit County. Current winds at Cooper mountains are close to 60 mph and Breckenridge high peaks are gusting to 85 mph in the past hour. Moisture is rather scarce but could see scattered showers over the far northern mountains early this morning with the jet streak before further drying pushes into the region. Across the plains early this morning, surface low pressure has lifted northeast into the far northeast corner which has ushered a cold front across much of the plains and even some stratus across the Denver area. Observations across the plains also showing ceilings of dust which have developed from the stronger winds over New Mexico from yesterday. As the upper trof lifts out this morning, stronger westerly winds will surface around mid morning and spread over the nearby plains this afternoon. However, secondary cold front expected to push back westward towards the Front Range later this afternoon and evening with increasing westerly winds and higher humidity levels. Winds will be gradually decreasing in all areas this evening. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 431 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 Tuesday, there will be slight ridging aloft in the ongoing strong southwesterly flow. Models have 700 mb temperatures back to 10 to 15 C across the area. It will be a few degrees warmer over the plains and around 10 to 15 F warmer in the high country where highs will be back in the 50s and 60s. It will be mostly clear and dry with no chance of precipitation, and breezy southwesterly winds will mix down again. There will be elevated to critical fire weather conditions across northeast Colorado in the afternoon as humidity of 10 to 20 percent is coincident with gusts 25 to 40 mph. We have issued a Fire Weather Watch for South Park, the southern foothills, Palmer Divide and adjacent plains north through Denver and east and south through Lincoln County, in effect 11 AM to 9 PM MDT. Late Tuesday, the next upper trough will come on shore over California. Wednesday, there will increasing and more southerly flow aloft over Colorado as the trough moves over the Great Basin. There will be significant warming, high temperatures back to the upper 80s and lower 90s across the plains and 60s and 70s in the high country. It will be more dry as well and humidity will fall to 10 to 15 percent across almost the entire area, even much of the high country. Winds will be more southerly but similar in speeds to those Tuesday with deeper mixing. A Fire Weather Watch for Wednesday is very likely. Thursday, the trough and surface low will advance to the High Plains and push a cold front across Colorado. This will bring cooling, though temperatures will probably stay well above normal, and possibly isolated to scattered showers over the mountains and northern plains. Any isolated storms should rapidly exit east, then much drier air sets back in over Colorado. Thursday evening, models show strong subsidence behind the trough and it should get windy in the afternoon and evening, especially across the high country. Expect another day of widespread elevated to critical fire weather conditions. Friday through the weekend, models have a ridge moving over the west coast and northwest flow aloft over Colorado. Looks like persistent warm and dry weather. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1026 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 Stratus is gone from the terminals and the only tricky part of the TAF will be the winds this afternoon and again Tuesday afternoon. We still expect them to shift to west at DIA and APA, but the timing is getting later in the afternoon. The northeast push/cooler air in place right now may prove to be stubborn such that there is a slight chance winds never do shift to the west at DIA. For now, will keep the wind shift in the TAFs for 22Z at DIA, 20Z at APA. BJC should go west by 20Z as well. Tonight, a northeast wind shift behind a secondary cool front is expected to reach DIA around 8 PM, and not long after at BJC and APA. Winds will be out of the ENE at 10-15 kts past midnight before weakening. There is a good signal for ILS conditions with a stratus deck between 035-050 after 3 AM Tuesday. Any status deck that forms tomorrow morning should scatter out by 10 AM if not sooner. Winds on Tuesday should be southeast from late morning through early afternoon at 12-16 kts, then maybe out of the south during the mid to late afternoon. There will be a Denver Cyclone during the afternoon hours so winds at DIA could be out of pretty much any direction depending on where the cyclone forms and moves. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 431 AM MDT Mon May 9 2022 Critical fire weather conditions expected over Park, Southern Front Range foothills and Palmer divide with gusts up to 40 mph. For the further northern areas under the watch, will upgrade the watch to a warning for the Denver/Boulder areas but decided to cancel the watch for further north and east of Denver due to expected higher humidities and easterly winds coming back west later this afternoon with secondary frontal boundary. May see an hour or so of critical fire conditions but expected to not meet the three hour criteria. Tuesday, it will be warmer and drier, mostly clear with no chance of precipitation, and breezy southwesterly winds will mix down again. There will be elevated to critical fire weather conditions across northeast Colorado in the afternoon as humidity of 10 to 20 percent is coincident with gusts 25 to 40 mph. The most critical conditions will again be across the southern part of the forecast area.
