Aside from the earlier expansion of the Red Flag Warning to
include Fire Zone 239, no other significant changes have been
made to the ongoing forecast. Minor updates were made in the near-
term to account for the latest observational data.

Across the plains between the Palmer Divide and the Cheyenne
Ridge, including areas around and east/northeast of Denver,
elevated to near-critical fire-weather conditions are expected
this afternoon. Relative humidity in these areas is expected to be
below 15 percent, with occasionally gusty west winds. However,
given the weak low-level pressure gradient along the core of a
strengthening lee trough in these areas, confidence in frequent
gusts exceeding 25 mph is low. As a result, additional expansions
to the Red Flag Warning area are not presently necessary.

UPDATE Issued at 750 AM MDT Tue Apr 19 2022

Fire Zone 239 -- including Boulder and Jefferson Counties Below
6000 Feet and West Broomfield County -- has been added to the Red
Flag Warning today. In this area, the latest short-range model
guidance provides higher confidence in 25-30 mph gusts
materializing this afternoon amid relative humidity below 15
percent, mainly in the 3-7PM MDT timeframe. The approach of a
50-60kt 500-mb speed maximum late today will facilitate
increasing flow within the middle and upper portions of a deep
mixed layer, along with the greater potential for 25-30 mph gusts
elsewhere across the foothills vicinity.

No other changes have been made to the ongoing forecast.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Today, a warm zonal flow aloft will be over Colorado, ahead of
a weak short wave trough that will pass across the region
tonight. High temperatures today will be well above normal across
the plains, ranging from the mid to upper 70s. Temperatures should
fall short of the record of 83 for this date in Denver, but well
above the normal of 62. Gusty west winds gusting 25-30 mph,
coupled with RH values this afternoon as low as 10 percent will
produce critical or near critical fire weather conditions.
Reference the fire weather discussion for details. Tonight, the
models show moisture deepening in the mountains with light snow
developing mainly along and west of the Continental Divide after
06z. Best chance will be late tonight into Wednesday morning
around 12z, with 1 to 4 inches of accumulation. A cold front will
push across the northeast plains around 09z, with northerly post
frontal winds developing, strongest east of the urban corridor.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER DAY LIKELY SHAPING UP FOR FRIDAY...

To start this period, Wednesday will feature cooler temperatures
and lighter winds in most areas. The exception to the lighter
winds will be in the mountains, foothills, and northern border
area where gusty west winds will increase again during the
afternoon's better mixing. The rest of the plains should see
winds gradually decrease with anticyclonic flow develop behind
the building high pressure in the Central Plains. Any light snow
showers lingering over the higher mountains should be gone before
noon with influx of drier air behind tonight's short wave.

Thursday will feature warmer temperatures as the flow aloft turns
southwesterly, and warm advection re-establishes itself. Southerly
gradients increase through the afternoon, which will result in
increasing winds across the plains and Palmer Divide, but likely a
lighter wind day again from Denver north to Fort Collins. Highs
should be able to approach 80F in Denver. For Thursday night, an
interesting note is there's indications that boundary layer
moisture with higher dewpoints (upper 40s to lower 50s) will be a
possibility over the eastern plains. Anything would be welcome at
this point, but unfortunately that will likely be long gone by
Friday afternoon.

The most significant weather day of the week is still on track for
Friday. Critical fire weather conditions are expected to become
widespread as stronger southwest flow aloft develops, resulting in
deep mixing, strong gusty winds, and very low humidity. Gusts to
40 mph or more will be possible over the southern foothills,
Palmer Divide, and eastern plains, while temperatures warm into
the lower to mid 80s. More in the fire weather section below. At
least by late in the day, we'll have some precipitation moving
into the high country as the upper level trough approaches from
the west. That should lead to at least a few inches of new snow
through Friday night. There's still some uncertainty with regard
to how deep the trough is, so the plains could still have a chance
of post frontal showers Friday night into Saturday.

There are signs that weak troughiness will hover over the region
through the weekend, keeping some threat of showers along with
cooler temperatures in the forecast. Then, a return to much above
normal temperatures and dry conditions seems quite certain toward
Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

Today...VFR. Gusty west winds, upwards of 25 to 30 knots, expected
this afternoon before dropping off right around sunset. No expected
impacts to the terminal. High confidence.

Tonight...VFR. A cold front works its way through our terminals
after midnight turning the winds more northeasterly. Do not see much
in the way of gusts for our terminals with this front and wind
shift, though KDEN may have an hour or two of gusts to around 20
knots through 12Z. High confidence.

Wednesday...VFR. Expecting winds at KAPA and KBJC to become more
southerly late morning while at KDEN they look to remain
northeasterly, slowly veering to the east by early afternoon. High
confidence overall.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Fire Zone 239 -- including Boulder And Jefferson Counties Below
6000 Feet and West Broomfield County -- has been added to the Red
Flag Warning today. No other changes have been made to the ongoing
Fire Weather Discussion.

Critical to near critical fire conditions will be place over the
plains across the lower foothills eastward across the plains, due
to gusty winds, low humidity around 10% and persistently dry
conditions. Temperatures this afternoon will be well above
normal. At this time the greatest threat for sustained gusty winds
up to 30 mph will in the foothills as well as the Palmer Divide
extending into Lincoln County, and along the Cheyenne Ridge.
Therefore have issued a Red Flag Warning for those areas starting
at noon and continuing through 8 pm. A storm system will pass to
the north of Colorado tonight with light snow developing in the
mountains west of the Continental Divide. East of the divide it
will remain dry with gusty northerly winds developing after
midnight following the passage of a cold front.

Elevated fire weather conditions are expected Wednesday and
Thursday, with humidities falling into the 15-25% range over the
foothills and plains. Still some uncertainty in how dry/windy it
will be both days, but appears northern border area would be most
susceptible to reaching Red Flag criteria Wednesday, while
Thursday winds should increase over the southern foothills, Palmer
Divide, and eastern plains. Humidity looks to be higher over the
eastern plains, but southern foothills and Palmer Divide could be
close to reaching critical thresholds.

Friday looks to be the most concerning day of the week with very
dry, unseasonably warm, and windy conditions likely ahead of a
deepening storm system. Humidities look to bottom out near 10%
across most of the plains and lower foothills, with strong, gusty
winds to 40 mph or more (could be less Denver northward).
Confidence is relatively high, even at this timeframe, for
critical conditions to develop.

There should be improvement in humidity levels this weekend with
cooler temperatures, although breezy conditions are likely to
persist especially over the plains.

This hazardous weather outlook is for northeast and north central
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Very warm and dry conditions are expected this afternoon with
critical fire weather conditions across portions of the plains.
The combination of gusty winds and dry conditions will be highest
in the foothills, as well as in and and near the Cheyenne Ridge
and Palmer Divide this afternoon. A Red Flag Warning will be in
effect today from noon to 8 PM. Temperatures across the plains
will be well above normal with highs in the mid to upper 70s.
Tonight, a weak storm system and its associated cold front will
pass across northern Colorado, with scattered snow showers in the
mountains and gusty northerly winds on the plains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Elevated fire weather conditions are expected Wednesday and
Thursday across the foothills and plains, with a continuation of
dry conditions and breezy winds at times.

On Friday, widespread critical fire weather conditions are likely
over the plains and foothills as winds will become quite strong
and gusty. Temperatures will be warming well above normal, with
highs reaching the 80s across most of the plains, and 70s in the
foothills.

Mountain areas will likely see a few inches of snow with the next
storm system arriving late Friday and continuing into Saturday.
The plains could see a chance of showers, but at this time any
precipitation is expected to remain light.
